Wow this is amazing. What a surprise I got as I started to watch this, and saw my old condo as their view. I was on the second floor, so I would have had a view right through the upper floor. For those that say this doesn’t fit the neighbourhood, this is a HUGE upgrade over the house that was there.
Hello Stewart- There’s something that is staying with me on this design that wasn’t touched on. I am curious about the process on how they seemed to evolve the original cottage to this design. It appears that the bottom line of the band of widows would be in alignment with the eave line of the original cottage. It looks as if the additional height was extruded from what existed. (The street views of the old cottage are still on Google if you want to take look.) Is this something that was intentional on their part as a nod to the history, or was it an accommodation for the neighbourhood association? I can almost imagine them having built a model of the original cottage, and lifting the gabled roof. Then filling the height with windows ...

God bless you RU-vid algorithm for randomly brining this video to my attention! I live right around the block from this building, see it almost everyday and was THRILLED to learn more about it and get a glimpse of the interior, which, of course, I have been DYING to see! For those that don't live near it, it is absolutely stunning and a truly amazing addition to our neighborhood and we are all lucky to have it near us. And now that I know that the owners are also the designers I am even more impressed. The exterior has managed to do something that is incredibly difficult to do: Place a modern home into a neighborhood with mostly traditional homes/apartment buildings (many dating back to 100+ years), while not looking "out of place" or ostentatious. A true work of art. I cannot gush enough about it. Congratulations on this project and thanks for the tour!

The roof trusses defining and dividing the living spaces underneath is great thinking. But I'm surprised the second story ribbon windows have no apparent treatments that at least allow the option of privacy. I wouldn't want the view inside open to the neighbors across the alley 24/7.
Can't get over those solid trusses. Never seen anything like it before, and it's perfect for delineating the otherwise open-plan space. Just brilliant.
I love how they can be used to allow for different lighting qualities within a more open plan space. I'll definitely have to consider that in projects going forward.
I love their home but it's so spartan with the decor.. If I lived there those solid trusses would be amazing for hanging art and keeping that clean look.
That's an outstanding format! It was so educating and inspiring to see the life and work of these architects! It felt like visiting close friends and their small studio gives this nice cosy feeling unlike giant corporations.
Duuuude, this is the channel I wish I had when I still lived in Chicago. Lived and walked through basically every North and Northwest neighborhood and always wanted to get stories behind the most interesting houses and buildings.

Wow, what an amazing house! More than the tour, it was amazing to see the light in their eyes as they talk about their house. The way they keep looking at each with a smile, just shows how much they loved working on it together!
Just my personal opinion/preference, while I really enjoy the interior, the exterior doesn't fit the neighborhood. I don't think it needs to be brick but the gabled roof just looks out of place.
A couple of side by side residences with gabled roofs appear in the opening sequence, so they are not as out of place in that neighborhood as you suspect, but the exterior does contrast in material and detailing from the adjacent properties.
I'm pretty sure it's the case of "normal people living-normal house-normal business-ARCHITECTS LIVE HERE-normal house", I mean if you an architect, why should you try to blend in with those who just buy their house made buy some mass developers who was trying to cut cost and gain maximum profit?

I have some great professors but the ones that aren't that great make it really hard to continue. I wish they were more like you. If I ever become a professor, I want to teach like you do. At least where I study, I can mostly choose which lecturers I receive most of my input from. I'm lucky to be at a university with plenty of great lecturers on my current module with quite diverse practice and research backgrounds. It REALLY helps to be around professors that are genuinely passionate about architecture and to be open to foster that passion within yourself.
Interesting, I used to watch all her videos. Probably why I got recommended Stewart’s channel. I found it interesting that her channel has tended more to pure architectural design over the earlier sustainability theme. I found it important to adjust any figures quoted for inflation when the featured designers brag about the frugality. There was a recent one where the price quoted for the beginner A-frame was over twice the average cost of a _tiny home_ while the designer was earning $200k in 1980, not inflation adjusted, that was described as a modest income. Compared to the income of the nationally renown architect they had worked under, it was small but likely still many fold that of Kirsten’s viewers today (based on word choice and types observations in the comments). There was also the major factor that featured designer had top quality education and on the job experience before ever attempting said home, bundled together with an internal drive to rival Isaac Newton. Kirsten is an idealist and a promoter of her ideologies who is more interested in inspiring change and exploration than an accurate bookkeeping of costs and time invested. She is gifted in these areas and has inspired many around the world. In the effort to describe the process of construction, because DIY is a fundamental facet of the bespoke architecture she features, many relative terms are used to speed the narration. There are rarely any real details about the real costs or even the true background of the designer. If someone wants to consider following their example, you have to figure out if it financially feasible for you. There are a myriad of details you have to ascertain whether it’s possible or what must be done to achieve the effect or purpose you desire. As a viewer it is very easy to forget what it costs to create inspiring and excellent work. It takes huge amounts of time, thought, education, knowledge of skills, creativity and mountains of failed or discarded ideas.
I really liked the woman who presented. For some reason I appreciate how she speaks and articulates her thoughts, pausing instead of adding "like", etc... That aside, they did an amazing job with this home. I love dioramas so this was right up my alley.
I love everything about this house's design, and this couple's ethos towards their design process! I love designing furniture and spaces, and so the fun and creativity they seem to bring to their work is tempting me to become an architect!

One of the most appealing things about being an architect is probably the opportunity to do this kind of thing, lots of people want to have massive influence on their living and working spaces, architects and a few other professions are more often able to design them on their own from the ground up
Interesting to see architects own homes. One thing though, the acoustics sounded really bad, and looking at all those hard surfaces, it seems likely that it wasn’t just the mike. When designing these big open living spaces, sound should be considered as important as light. Always nice to see a piece of danish design (the Børge Mogensen elphant in the back).

Thanks to you and the owners for the tour - I really like the simplicity of the place, both inside and out. I could easily see myself living in that house. I am an abstract painter and would really like a bigger workspace - the basement would be a great solution, although not one used in Australia that I have seen.
Love what they did with the hallway with the reading nooks and quiet green spaces, totally agree the hallway typically isn’t very function aside from as a through place. I saw a design once that inbuilt the bathroom sink into the side of the hallway with the toilet tucked around the corner of the end of the corridor, so when the door was open at the end of the hallway you didn’t see the toilet, then the inbuilt hallway sink plus storage was beside it and the shower was on the other side of the hallway. Basically you got two rooms plus a corridor that felt like three rooms which helped divide everything up so everything could be used at once by different people, which is something I’d really like for family use. Also good thinking for flipping the regular house design with bedrooms below and living rooms above so they used the long side of the house to their advantage. The internal balcony to reflect and connect with their neighbours was also a great touch.
The couples here are super respectful and delicate in between each other. Co-working together admiringly. Its quite interesting seeing the two staring at each other while speaking about their designs cohesively. Great video Stewart. Definitely enjoyed the design process from model to finished produce. I'm not a architect, but I definitely enjoy these types of videos. Oh btw. There are two things the audio could be improved on, as a small critique for whom the editors are. :P I've done audio and visual work for interviews and podcast as a freelance, but my main career is graphic design. 1. Audio could be turned to mono within the L and R channel. But in premiere you could duplicate the 'L' and 'R' channels, then right click, click "Audio Channel" to create the corresponding left and right channels. 2. Audio reverb can be reduce using the settings within "Audio Track Mixer." (3. This step isn't really necessary, but to add a a cherry on top; is to create a smoother audio transitions fade. (hotkey: ctrl+shift+d. (make sure you have both audio are highlighted))) Amazing content. Perseverance is key.
Fascinating! I loved both the exterior and interior. Viewed from here in Europe, the plot size is intriguing: 125×25ft (38×4,5m), but that includes a narrow alley on the rear side! Amsterdam houses are narrow because of the canal facade tax. But I'd have thought with such a narrow plot the houses would be joined together, as English-style terraces.
Incredible space. I like the models! Clean cut is a way to go and love the color palette. I realized in way more developed areas, communities will somehow focusing on the interior living, invest in latest technology and spare thoughts about multifuntional furniture. It is just some of my observations. In my country, that I living in, the façades are really hold a top-tier look, but because you've consuming hefty budget here, we rarely equip the decent up-to-date eletrical appliances for go along with supposed interior.
great solution by vonglinow/kwong to bend the whole space back into the house on the front side and make it a two store space at the same time. at least in my case it provokes a very strong feeling of being saved from living on display, but still maintain visual contact to the outside
I liked the functional solution a lot. I'm curious though the exterior color scheme. A similar brick finish would have blended better with the neighorhood. If that was too expensive a choice, maybe a brick gesture somewhere or paint colors more consistent with the adjacent buildings. Unfortunately, the building still looks like a model. It could go a step beyond with a richer exterior finish. Consider the richness of FLW's Robie house in Chicago. The brickwork and detailing takes it to a much higher level.
This is a masterpiece. I mean, Architects should be aware of design everytime they perform, but when your own house is involved in that process, things can get heavy considering the designer is going to live inside that specific project. If any mistake is made, the Architect himself of herself is gonna suffer the consequences. That's why this project is so special, it looks like a relevant achievement for them and I believe these kind of work should flood all over RU-vid. What an informative piece. I knew what neighbourhood this was the minute I saw the brick bungalows. I think there are a couple of ideas in this video that could be explored further. One would be to look at other architect's models. I know that Frank Gehry's models are as creative as his architecture. The other idea would be looking at other architect's homes. An obvious choice would be Jeanne Gang. I lived in her Aqua Tower for three years, and it was the best place I have ever lived. Her architecture is inspired by nature. Even the new Vista Towers were inspired by crystal structures.
I like this model usage, especially with interior pieces to fill the space. I am not well acquainted with architecture other than your videos, but one thing I learned from manufacturing is that it can help to make a physical model of your machine shop, and have interior equipment 3d printed into scaled down sizes to a Lego figure. Having interior models allows you to plan out our space beyond just what the cad layout shows. There are many details that are easy to miss, such as expediting, work spaces, different day to day equipment, etc that all take up space and its important to understand the flow from using that area. While this is a residential space, and one light believe it shouldn't be as critical, its good to see in depth planning to prototype potential issues before one will commit to spending vast amounts of their life living in such a space.
Yeah man, I don’t want to be negative, but since this video has already been showered with praise i gotta be honest. Nearly every issue i have with modern architecture is perfectly encapsulated in this building, inside and out.
As a rule, I HATE upside-down houses, but I'd move into this one in a heartbeat. It's perfectly executed for its' surroundings and requirements. I especially love the softened edge of the corridor to make it into a space.
The use of trusses was brilliant. Love the wood there. Less so with the balusters. A series of pictures of model changes really would have underlined their process. I am sure describing cutting away pieces and re-pining new parts really doesn't do it justice. I would come back for a tour of their model archives.
Always great to see architects and their home projects, and their process. Physical hand made models still have their place in the design process. The project and location made me think about your other video on flat roofs. Would have liked to have heard more about the the choice of the gable roof over a flat roof. Looks like a missed opportunity for a roof top bonus space and better fit to the urban context.
I'm going to be honest, I find contemporary stuff horrible, especially the exteriors which I always find disgusting (I hate concrete) but the interior of this house is very interesting (even though the outside is awkward in my eyes, terrible black walls made of I don't know why). I like the concept and the ideas behind the int design
Plus it doesn't fit the rest of the neighbourhood, is the thing I don't like of modern arquitecture, you have to adapt or inspire on what's around you.
The apartment next door is far prettier in my eyes, whereas this looks like a black plastic barn sat atop concrete. But hey, to each their own and as you said, the interior isn't as bad
To those querying the privacy aspect, I believe the long window is mirrored glazing meaning minimal views in during daylight - but obviously that doesn't work at night if the lights are on.
I'm beginning to see & hear more of this kind of configuration where the sleeping space is on the 1st floor, while the living space is on the 2nd floor. Is this the future of home design?? I grew up in Chicago in a bungalow where the attic was converted into 2 bedrooms and our basement was renovated into a barroom, small kitchen, toolroom, laundry space & a tiny living room. The 1st floor contained a kitchen, living room, dining room, bathroom & the 2 bedrooms, which is the original design; a Bungalow. Keep in mind that a bungalow is a single level house where the attic (if any) and basement are unfinished. So the living & sleeping space was all on one floor.

I am an architecture student from Denmark and I have been totally caught up with your channel. - Is it possible for you to make more videos about the old giants/legends such as Louis Khan, Corbusier, Frank Lloyd etc. and perhaps some informative videos about their works and techniques as well?
The interior is quite beautiful, though I would want more privacy. The alley might've been nicer with some thin horizontal windows as well to bring more light throughout the corridor and connection between the upper and lower floors. The exterior is on the brutal side, perhaps reflecting the harshness of the wordl. The front is like the entry to a warehouse, there's no features or lighting to soften it up which would have been nicer imo. Stylistically, it is very different from the neighbourhood. Once inside, it is a very inviting and comfortable looking space.
Very cool brick house next to the eyesore ... I may be the only one that thinks this, but man, that is one glorified shed/backstreet workshop in a nice residential area
I liked the house. loved the the interior, and absolutely loved those windows and that light coming in, the open areas of the top floor and the usage of the trusses to "separate" those areas... but seeing it in context with the neighborhood shows me an example of extreme individualism: absolutely no acknowledgement of or compromise with the surrounding architecture. Seeing as it was designed by the one's living there it's even more notorious the intention of it... they can speak to feeling "intimate" with the neighbors, but they couldn't be more separate from them. They didn't have to make it completely different from its surroundings: they chose to. They could have integrated something from the surrounding architecture into their house design... didn't have to be something huge, just a subtle nod to the surrounding architecture, acknowledging it belongs to that neighborhood despite being so different from the rest of the buildings. But none exists, as far as I could see.
