My whole life I have known a friend's father was once a member of Manson's "family". He got smart, got clean, and left before all the murdering happened, but Dad told me that my best friend's father had said Manson was the most hypnotizing speaker he'd ever heard. I did not dare bring this fact up to the man himself until Charles Manson passed away. Only then did I ask him how he felt about Manson being dead, and he said, "I was one of his followers, the Family, for a time in my life!" I told him Dad had told me that from my earliest days, and I had always known. He was astounded, because it was such a tightly kept secret locally. What he said about Manson being dead was, more or less, "I'm glad. I spent decades feeling like I have to look over my shoulder, because I left..." In other words, he didn't have to be afraid for himself or his family any more.

This guy was just a master manipulator who managed to roam free for a few years

Yeah I really can't get behind the whole conspiracy thing, mostly because back then police rarely work together so if he was arrested multiple times in different places it would not shock me if they just let him go on a warning because they had no idea what kind of guy they had just arrested. Countrywide databases were in their infancy, it's just more believable that the police didn't do their diligence then for there to be a big conspiracy.

I am helping my teen nephew who is doing a presentation for a school project. I didn't know much but this was the easiest nfor him to understand. We are South African, so Manson wasn't a big story here. So kid approaches his crime channel loving Aunty but I didn't know much more than the Tate story and some odd bits I had picked up here and there. I was born in 68, so I never knew much but this was a good overall view.
