@@splattim3437 - Dennis Burfoot CENTIPEDE This worm they call the Centipede, was crawling on a car. The distance that it traveled for a worm was not too far, But how the wind was blowing it scarce could navigate And from the back and to the front it's course was laid out straight. His fifty legs on either side he raised with utmost care, And set his toes to grip and hold so as not to blow off there And while he valiantly did try to go from aft to fore The car was going down the road at fifty miles or more Little did the creature know how swiftly he did fly It was for him to crawl along and not to wonder why. The man that held the steering wheel and made the car to go, Thought he was just going for a ride and little did he know. While the country side he knew beneath his wheels rolled by Twenty times the speed he drove above him moved the sky. And while he thought he traveled west the opposite was true, For with the turning of the earth it was backwards that he flew. And yet there was a greater speed with nothing to compare, The earth in orbit 'round the sun, a year from here to there. So crawl on little centipede and relate to what you see, Leave Einstein then to theorize on relativity.

People who comment that she got dragged to reach 184mph, did you watch the video? She get's detached at 16:45, at like 140mph. Then she has to pedal the bike to 184mph on her own. She has to be dragged first to reach a high speed because the gear ratio on the bike is so high, it wouldn't be possible to pedal the bike. Yes, the car in front splits some of the air for her, she still has to use her own strength and techniques to accelerate and stay balanced. Plus, she has to keep up with the car, so that she doesn't fall out of the slipstream or she would just immediately get tossed into the air. Also, to those who say she sounded like super conceited, she didn't come up with this record herself, she was actually persuaded into doing this by the man who set the record.
@olsonspeed

aka SHE:S DRAFTING THE VEHICLE.... you know... because the air at that speed would slow back down to normal resistance.. like 30 mph.... lol ps no human can pedal passed that, the resistance becomes greater then they're pedaling strength (being even if you had infite gears) so.. the car basically creates a vacuum behind it at that speed, and thats the ONLY thing keeping her at speed. so she just followed a car up to 180 mph... woohoo... anyone can do that.

I've ridden in pacelines moving up to 27-28 mph. It's an amazing feeling. You try to keep about one wheel diameter of space between your bicycle and the one ahead of you, but it takes very steady riders to make it work, and good communication is critical when the peloton needs to slow down. If your front wheel overlaps and touches the back wheel of the cyclist ahead of you, it will cause you to crash because you lose the ability to steer.

That's the real thing most people don't see here. It's not that she was tethered, it's that she's using the drag of the vehicle itself. That's the real "cheat." It's not a "windscreen" or anything. It's literally the suction of the air pressure behind the vehicle.

All the hate in the comments is a little unwarranted, she never claimed to be the fastest cyclist. She is “the fastest human on a bicycle”, which is a factual statement. This achievement is one of engineering, coordination, and balance, not strength or endurance. I’ll agree that it is an unusual record to win, but I acknowledge the intense difficulty involved. You can say what you want about the WSJ obnoxiously highlighting her gender, but none of that takes away from its merit.

It's difficult to control a bicycle going anywhere over 50 MPH. In my experience, even well-built bicycles become unstable and unpredictable at speeds higher than that, and steering becomes _extremely_ touchy - The slightest mistake can send you flying to oblivion. Bicycles handle quite different from motorcycles due to generally narrower tires and wheels, and being built much lighter, making steering responses much faster. Unpredictable gusts of wind can easily blow you off balance, too. So imagine being in her place trying to control that monster, going WAY faster than the dang thing was even built to go. That's one incredibly brave woman. I truly admire her. Sure, she was assisted with another vehicle, but assisted or not, that's an extreme record.

When I was a kid I had a junked up yellow bike with a banana seat and sissy bars. The tassels were long gone. By the time I got the bike someone had spray painted it yellow over several layers of other colors. I named the bike "Taxi" because it was yellow and the other kids always wanted a ride, you know, to 7-Eleven to get a slurpy. The neighborhood kid was a BMX racer and, of course, much cooler than me. He wanted to drag race. Taxi was fast and so I accepted the challenge. The race was on the street, straight from one corner of the block to the next corner. Surprisingly, I won by a lot. Taxi was the best bike I ever had.

My personal record is 27-ish, which is pathetic, even for an average biker like myself. This is unbelievably impressive. I hate it when people criticize someone for doing what is truly amazing. I don't think some people realize how excruciatingly difficult it would be to even maintain balance anywhere near the speeds she was going. Yes, she was towed until she could pedal in that gear ratio. Yes, she was behind a wind barrier. It's still an amazing feat. Controlling a bike at those speeds baffles me. This is truly proof that women can be just as excellent athletes as men. People are amazing. (Pardon my redundant use of the word "amazing.")
