How This Game Made Soulslikes Fun Again

Soulslikes are boring. Or they can be. Dark Souls and FromSoftware titles have influenced so much of the action game landscape that video games that aren’t even souls-likes end up adopting the parrying, dodge, rolls, and bonfires that the genre is known for. Dark moody video games lacking personality. A focus on bein hard instead of being fun. And action games nowadays don’t have much panache. But En Garde! by Fireplace Games bucks that trend and makes soulslikes fun again. Well action games, anyway. En Garde isn’t a souls-like but the inspiration from Sekiro is definitely there. That and classic swashbuckling flicks like Zorro or The Princess Bride. So let me tell you about En Garde! and why En Garde might be changing the action video game genre and the soulslike genre too. Color? In MY soulslikes? I know, shocking!

Another excellent video. So many game developers forget that the raison d'etre of computer games is to be a FUN pastime, not a slog or a chore; and that dying repeatedly in a grim game world is the antithesis of fun. PS: It gladdens my heart that you are now getting more supporters on Ko-Fi. 🥰

Please retry Sekiro. As dour as Fromsoft's output can be, it is a beautiful world full of mischief. It does take a while to click, but around the time it does you'll be introduced to little rat men and monkeys that go total goblin mode. So much underrated comedy in this one.

@@filmotter The oppressiveness and bleakness of dark souls world adds a lot the game's visceral experience This video may be an antithesis of that and, the things you enjoy like the campy humor and game mechanics are already in a lot of games like the Fable series which you should definetely play if you hadn't yet.

Amazing video as always ❤ I just finished En Garde! I love how it shows when you need to parry or it's going to be an unblockable attack it really does make it more accessible. As of right now I'm trying to get all the achievements cause I love the game

Definitely piqued my interest in en guarde! I may have misunderstood what you meant by "made it past one hour in sekiro" but it doesn't sound like executing a parry is a "skill issue" for you and more like you just didn't immediately get it without giving it time. That's where the rewarding part comes in, you work at it and become familiar with the different animations and timings the reward is feeling of well earned mastery, it's not an innate skill you can do right away. That being said I love the idea of telegraphed timings with generous windows in a different style.

I think it could be a mix of factors. I'm working my way through a few parry-heavy games at the moment to see if I can get the hang of it a bit more.

I find it very interesting that From Software is my favorite developer by far, but soulslikes in general are one of my least fav genres. Also, En Garde demo was very fun! I want to play it for sure!

this game looks insanely good, but all the reviews ive seen its around 5h long? i cant see this game being worth $40 if its that short, even if it looks/plays great maybe if it was around 15h i would buy it

The combat inputs are nothing novel fs. It's just souls was so focused on delivering gameplay that makes full utilization of those inputs through intense and methodical enemy designs/encounters while capped by a stamina system and tight hit boxes that made it click. It's like you could just have the most basic input like jumping in Mario. It's how you design everything else around that mechanic that makes a game stand out.

@@Oryyyt Wait till you find out about hack n slash and other action genres. There are a fuck ton of games that have vastly superior action combat to fromsoft games lol, I'd argue that fromsoft games have middling combat.

@@IskandarTheWack it doesn't matter how good the combat system or how sophisticated the inputs are. It's still the encounters that's designed around it that makes or breaks the game for me personally. I'd rather have Elden Ring's minimal, weighty, contextual movesets that allows skill expression(esp once you learn hard-swapping)when facing lethal, hyper aggressive foes rather than DMC, or Black Desert where everything is just combo fodder to your anime af animations with a thousand inputs and combos. There's clearly a large demographic for that kind of power fantasy. I'm just not one of them.

I am more of a guy who prefers Devil May Cry form of combat. Soulslikes are fun and all but when every game developer copies one, it just starts to become painfully stale and when you even dare to point that out, all the hardcore fans come at you like vultures, thinking you're a skill-less hack who wants an easy mode... When you just want a different game. Except you can't really find a different game because every game with a focus on sword fighting just wants to be the next DS. ... I miss the stylish action genre...

@@filmotter Absolutely. Highly recommend. If you want a good introduction to the series, I'd recommend 1. It shows its age, but it's still a really good game. If you wanna start with the best one, 3 is there for you. ... Just make sure you stay the fuck away from 2... 4 and 5 are great as well.
