How about a video on the aggregates and the quarries around the great lakes like Inland Harbor and Port Dolomite. Which a lot of the Lakers haul aggregates.

Found this video by chance. I really love seeing you talk about these freighters as I'm pretty sure I've seen every one in person. I've recently gotten an interest in Ships around Michigan after visiting the decommissioned John W. Boardman / Lewis G. Harriman in DeTour, MI (the passion project of the Vander Meulens).

I went through De Tour on my way to Drummond Island and then again on the way back, some time ago. I think if I had sneezed eitehr time, I may have missed it.

This was a very informative video. Clean Diesel technology can take on different forms, I guess. Many years ago, BMW completely redesigned their inline six cylinder Diesel engine. They wanted to make it quieter, more peppy and pollute less. They completely redesigned the combustion chambers of the cylinders and almost completely did away with that traditional klak, lklak, klak of your average automotive Diesel. They developed a turbocharger that's running as long as the engine is running that boosted the horsepower by nearly 50% and made the exhaust a lot cleaner. With cleaning up the exhaust, they weren't done, yet. They designed a canister that goes on the exhaust (can't remember what they call these canisters atm) and burns off the majority of soot and other chemicals in Diesel exhaust, storing by product in the canister. The result was a much quieter, engine that made their 320 series sedan just as peppy as though it had a gasoline engine but got much, much better fuel economy and polluted less. Can you tell me why ship builders don't use Diesel-electric engines similr to those used by locomotive engines on the railroads?

I know the Mark W. Barker has an EMD engine. As far as why shipbuilders use one engine vs. the other I don't know all of the reasons but design plays a part. With older vessels a refit would be tough hence why this gas scrubber is used. In the next few years I think emissions will be an even bigger topic and the classic freighters will either have to comply are be sent to the scrapyard. But we'll see.

@@ConnorTenold Several months ago, I read that scientists are making some great strides in reducing the costs of separating hydrogen from oxygen. Maybe, ships of the future and maybe, cars, will burn hydrogen for fuel. With water as the onl byproduct, they would be environmentally friendly. I also read somewhere that, if we stared burning hydrogen from water now, at the same rate that we burn gasoline, the wter on this planet would last for twice the length of the current estimated life expectancy of the sun.

Nice video. How are the non scrubber Lakers complying? The American Steamship 1000 put out a dark plume. Are they using special low sulfur diesel and/or some type of additive?
@zubrickadvisors6742
@zubrickadvisors6742 Год назад
They don't have to comply...yet. The rules for clean diesel take effect in a few years. Until then, the old ships sail the lakes with class, until they can no more.
@chuckg6039
@chuckg6039 Год назад
@@zubrickadvisors6742 so will those ships implement scrubbers? What are other options. A few years isn't far off.
@zubrickadvisors6742
@zubrickadvisors6742 Год назад
No clue Chuck. They may just retire those ships. I would think it seems some ships have the capacity for scrubbers and others do not. Frankly, I have only seen these scrubbers on these particular ships, not those that spend most of their time in the ocean, so it beats me.@@chuckg6039

I really love this video! But please could I ask for some credits for the Oberstar photo? Me and my buddy did well on them and I dont want them to be posted everywhere without our permission. I think its perfectly fine posting it, but I just would like some credit.

I can put something in the description if you want, or put you and your friends name on the thumbnail, just tell me what you think is fair. I totally get that too because I know I'm the same way about my stuff. Do you want your name and your friends or just what you both go by on RU-vid?
