Alright. I'm starting to understand the insane volume of praise you give Thrawn. This was some absurdly clever shit he pulled.

So... Thrawn abused a programming limit to the droids. And, the whole of the clone wars, no-one thought to do that?

a testiment to the trade federations stupidity the had more than enough traditional firepower on the 2 lucrehulks to win an engagement.

To think if the Empire or the Republic had more Thrawns, their enemies would have likely ceased to exist within such a short time span.

Thrawn is basically a Hannibal of Star Wars universe. His tactics, ability to understand enemy and use it's tactics against him.

I think the reason a lot of people love Thrawn (myself included) is that he isn't a fighter himself, he is a pure tactician, who would be an invaluable roll in any warfare, is willing to take calculated risks. He is purely calculations, and very rarely if at all would we see him last out in anger. He doesn't whine or complain about what he has or is given, he doesn't look at the near impossible hand he is given and says "Wow, this is a really bad hand" instead think "How do I win?"

Can we take a moment to appreciate that this guy basically said "I care enough about your experience with this story to not spoil it for you. Stop watching this" lol I love this channel. Truly puts experience over itself. Much love.

I like Thrawn's tactics but the explanation of having limited encrypted signatures seems off-putting. The Trade Federation could just make a dynamic encryption, changing codes every second (given futuristic hardware it is possible; similar to how IT companies now handle it nowadays) to prevent slicing. Also, given that the communication range is limited, it can divert the Lucrehulks' power from shields to boost the signal temporarily giving the Trade Federation a slight edge. They could also just press the attack and move a bit forward.

Lucky for Thrawn those vulture droids still had a control ship, the new ones no doubt would of have gave him some problems

Might I suggest the Keys move from halo. It was a strategic victory for the UNSC above Sigma Ocatnus IV late in the human-covenant war and would result in the destruction of 2 covenant cruisers, a destroyer and the retreat of a super carrier with only 1 UNSC ship. The tactical and strategical brilliance of the Keys move may only be matched by non other than Admiral Thrawn himself. But this is my 2 cents and your the man who makes the videos.

Would love to hear more about the Chiss. What they were doing before coming into contact with the wider galaxy, what they did when Thrawn fought to restore the Empire, and what happened with them after that. But also talk about their tech and ships, as well as the tech and ships used by The Empire of the Hand

This whole time everyone thought he was a genius but in reality the trade federation was just incompetent.

I had a good chuckle at a command ship detonating due to poor communication software and droid programming. You’d think the vultures would be smart enough to fully deploy to outside the ship. But nope. Cheap software and predictably let Thrawn win. The easiest way to win this fight would be to advance with the intention to overwhelm, and to keep the fighters within offensive operating range.

I do find it strange that the trade federation submitted. 1 lucrehulk should have the fire power to out gun the chiss cruisers, and from there launch fighters to mop up his forces.

Just sounds like two kids on the playground having an imaginary fight, where each one yells increasingly crazy gadgets to have an "advantage" on the other. Quite frankly this was just: let's make up a weakness so the other can exploit it.... Nothing extraordinary tbh, no interesting maneuvers, etc.

The bit about repeatedly doing the same thing to figure out droid encryption was pretty smart. With the full-spectrum jamming thing, actually, I kind of figure that with the droids being disabled while launching, they'd crash into the opposite hangar arm. That is, if you accept full-spectrum jamming as a thing.

Some of this seems extremely contrived. Especially getting the missiles to hit the ships that fired them. (not only that, but you get a missile to hit the ship that fired it with such pinpoint accuracy that it ends up right in the weak spot?) I mean, the initial test of the droid control system also seems farfetched. Only the wide spectrum jamming seems like something that might work... Of course, this all hinges entirely on the droid ships being 100% centrally controlled with no independent capabilities at all. Which, while not entirely inconsistent with what we know about trade federation droids, is certainly a colossally stupid design flaw. By all means, if they need centralised coordination to function effectively, that's one thing. But having them completely incapable of acting at all without that central control? Plus how is a jamming signal penetrating INTO the hull of a large cruiser? This seems a rather contrived set of circumstances, that while somewhat impressive in terms of someone identifying and picking apart the weaknesses, relies on some extreme contrivances to be viable in the first place.

Kay described the Chiss as primitive and back wards, and he didn't change his attitude even after Thrawn entered the bridge of the flagship.

Full spectrum jamming is quite possible and is done in the modern day the trick is your power supply has to be able to overwhelm the power of whatever it is you are attempting to jam. similar to speaking over someone in a conversation through use of volume. I fail to see why the trade federation simply didn't divert more power to their comms. However, they might not have understood what was happening nor had the ability to divert the power or perhaps the didn't think that far. I also fail to see why they didn't use the sheer size and bulk and the powerful shields to simply move through Thran's fleet and let their shields take the majority of the damage from the smaller chiss combined with their cannons.

In the end he was beaten by spirit wolves, a kid, and space tentacle monster whales. GJ Disney AAA story telling.

Full spectrum Jamming does make sense but you need some way to make a output for every wavelength. Like a variable transmitter, I'm not a radio guy I just understand how it works fundamentally. Or to cover all spectrum of receivers you could do something like I output Jamming in a low frequency on the off chance that every spring and unshielded wire will receive this very high voltage signal and short out/ burn out the circuits.

If jamming is that effective, why didn't the Republic have every single ship in the Fleet consistently employ this during engagements? Why not create ships with huge dedicated jammers that have a larger longer range? Sounds kinda like hyperspace ramming to me.

As much as I love Thrawn, he's basicly a Gary Stu at this point.

He is such an good commander, because he truly understand his enemy, but such an complete victory against an unknown enemy.. I don't think that would be happen. An victory could be possible, but not such an perfect one.

Full spectrum jamming works as we see the same thing today the issue is it can either be directional or omnidirectional there isn't really a powered difference requirement between directional and omnidirectional. The directional uses interference to direct or create a directional signal whereas omnidirectional just uses the base signal.

This reminds me of a Tom Clancy book where a U.S. general orders a tactical retreat dureing a winter tank battle against the Soviets. The battle took place at dusk and the Soviet tanks used an oil in their diesel engines that froze or became useless after dropping below a particular temperature during the night and left the Soviets immobile and open to an attack against the gasoline power US tanks. I don't know how likely that could be but it made for a good story.

Actually full spectrum jamming makes sense because if they sent a mass signal over a whole bunch of frequencies it would disrupt most to all other ones from getting out due to the jamming interrupting the signal but the signal strength would degrade exponentially which would account for the short range of effect

Information is power and not only did he know enough about them, he also very easily used it against them. Sometimes I am a bit like Thrawn. Like in Shadow of War for an example on my part, if I saw an Orc that got enraged by something, but had the weakness of getting Dazed after it wore off, I would use that against them. Turning the key to their strength and buy time to turn it into their fatal flaw, just like Thrawn did here. Used what would have been their strength and turned it into their defeat.

Then in Rebels he can't even take out this tiny Rebel cell...

Thrawn is the greatest military mind in star wars, only way he even loses at all is an unpredictable circumstance. He is easily my favorite star wars character, canon or not canon.

I am just now finishing the book "Thrawn" and have really enjoyed it. The novel really shows his tactical genius and truly helps show that Empiral naval tactics were not simply capital ships without support ships. On the otherhand Star Wars: Rebels makes Thrawn look stupid as a rock which is annoying as he easily has the ability to destroy such a small group, but I guess the plot armor was too strong.

Full spectrum jamming is actually quite simple, you just need 3-4 transmiters that cover all wave lenghts... alternatively, detonating nuclear bomb works almost that good.

The battle of umbara was fought on 2 fronts at the same time. Kenobi lead the fleet in orbit around the planet and engaged both seperatist and umbaran naval forces while anakin began the ground campaign to take tbe umbaran capital but was almost immediately switched with pong crell in leading the clones, forcing them to take heavy casualties that could have been entirely avoided had he not fallen from the order. Eventually the clones would resort to using espionage tactics on crell himself so he could not interfere with the clones' efforts to actually finish the campaign while they occupied an umbaran military base.

The author of this book literally let thrawn win easily and simple let him look cool at receiving this "gift". The way his enemies acted was simply put ridiculous even in Star Wars scale and not fully true to the lore.

I feel like "full spectrum jamming" is kind of hokey unless you have dedicated ships. Jamming irl is a thing, but it's limited because of (a) short range and (b) power requirements. To flood an area with enough junk signal to block out functional signals (which is what full spectrum jamming more or less would be here) requires immense power and a ship with implements and systems designed to do this. Moreover, because of the nature of electromagnetic emissions, they fall of quickly in power with range, meaning the initial burst at the point/ship of origin has to be very powerful. Think about being in the center of a sphere shooting straight rays out from your position to the surface. The farther those rays go, the more gap in between them. Intensity, in the case of light (which is what all E-M radiation is, including radio waves), decreases rapidly with range. It's the reason shining a flashlight towards the sky at night causes an open cone of light that rapidly dims the further it gets from you. Only polarized light has some defense against this, maintaining strength longer, but also not dispersing, meaning it has a narrow effective area. Using our sphere example again, it maintains strength, but the bigger the sphere gets, the less of its surface area you're actually covering. This is why irl jamming is often done with small mobile platforms using munitions that can be carried and can get close to the target to deliver a pinpoint strike. While that's arguably being done here by Thrawn, the problem is that doing so would also have put Thrawn's much smaller and weaker cruisers well within the firing range of the Trade Federation main weapon batteries, which likely would have destroyed his ships if they were, indeed, smaller and weaker. It also ignores that the Trade Federation ships themselves likely would have had protection from jamming due to their shields, and that hulls (metal and other matter) blocks a lot of E-M radiation. If it didn't, the crews of these ships would constantly be dying from ambient stellar radiation! So the signal shouldn't have been able to penetrate deep into the hull to where the fighters are stored and staged, which also means the ship that was destroyed by those explosions shouldn't have happened. I also have a problem with the "I was able to figure out their encryption and hack their systems", especially when it's supposed to be advanced encryption and something that Thrawn had never encountered before, especially as Thrawn is more of a strategic and tactical genius, not a computer hacking/slicing one. Renaissance Man though he is, that kind of beggars belief a bit. The fancy flying and getting missiles to hit their origin ships is also something that, no matter how many times I see it in fiction, just doesn't make a lot of sense. Advanced tracking munitions aren't designed to suddenly become dumbfire as soon as they're pointed back at the thing that shot them, and they have limited fuel, meaning they can't just chase around the target forever so the target can drag them back to the origin ship anyway. I'll also note the net weapon, which sounds basically like an overpowered Mag Pulse/Ion Cannon munition (it knocks out ships you need to knock out, yet for missiles, only takes out their guidance system but not their munition arming or rocket firing?) is a bit over the top. For that matter, the Chiss having an Interdictor seems a bit strange here, given that the Republic and CIS at this time did not really have much use of the technology, and even the Empire and Rebellion were somewhat limited in its employment until the Empire ramped up production and the Rebels successfully reverse engineered it. Of all the "underdog" fleets, that's a pretty insane strategic weapon to just happen to have available when your entire fleet otherwise consists of only 2 other ships and 9 fighters. It'd be like having an underdog Imperial fighting the Rebels who had only two CR-90s and 8 Assault Gunboats...but also had an Interdictor Cruiser just conveniently there. Oh, and his CR-90s have super advanced jamming technology. Indeed, between the Interdictor, advanced and powerful Jamming Technology, and super Ion Net Missile, most of this battle was won by simple technology and Thrawn just HAPPENING to have the exact mix of technology and weapons on his ships to deal with that exact situation, even though it was supposedly an impoverished fleet., it was an ADVANCED impoverished fleet that JUST HAPPENED to have all the trump cards it needed. Thrawn still had to be intelligent in using them, but most of the fight was just exploiting technology/weapons, it seems. . It's not that Thrawn is stupid here or anything, I'm more critiquing the technology he had at his disposal. While it IS fair to assume the Trade Federation would be more reliant on Droids than normal fleets, and thus more reliant on communication systems and limited ranges, which could be exploited, they should have had more shielding than this, and some better protection against some of Thrawn's attacks. The first part of the battle (deducing the limited range of droid fighters) IS smart. Trying to deduce which parts of their signals do things is also smart (this would have allowed targeted jamming at the right time to cause them to fly off into space by blocking the "return to post" signal), since that could be done at short range, with lower power needs, targeting specific fighters or small flight groups - things that make sense, again if we're assuming Thrawn's small fleet happened to have one or two good dedicated jammer ships. ...but a lot of the rest seems more "hand of god"/"cheat mode", including "fancy flying Aces", than good strategy or tactics.

The Thumbnail said Thrawn was unbeatable. In most cases he was but I quite Vividly remember that in The Last Command Wedge Antilles and his Xwing squadron is so skilled that they are able to disable Many of his Star Destroyers, and then buy enough time for Ruhk to stab Thrawn.
