This is the story about two of the deadliest plateaus in Asia and how the seemingly weaker one completely assimilated the other.
The Tibetanization of the Mongols is one of the most fascinating stories that I know. It took me years to research and several months to produce. Hope you guys like it.

As a Mongolian I watched it with both intensity and perhaps little sadness. I usually get offended by the videos made by non Mongols talking about our history as it entails with personal bias. Amazing video! Although I have to say that for Mongols living under Russian rule (Kalmyks, Buryads and Tuvans) Tibetan Buddhism was a blessing that saved us from massive christianisation. Russian imperial government tried to convert the ethnic minorities to Christianity but Buddhism served as the stronghold of native identity for Mongols. So, I'm glad Tibetan missionaries reached us earlier than Christians

Amazing!! I am a Tibetan. Really enjoyed learning more about my history and also what was happening on the other side (Mongol and Chinese...). I wanted to add 2 things. 1. The Golden Urn to decide the next Dalai Lama. How is that still in China. Because The Dalai Lama continued to this day. Current Dalai Lama being 14th in the lineage. Tibetan did use golden urn to find Dalai Lama. 2. Potala was not built entirely by the 5th Dalai Lama. Potala was originally built King Songtsen Gampo in ~7th Century. 5th Dalai Lama later added the red structures of Potala today. So White part is King Songtsen Gampo and red apart is done by 5th Dalai Lama.
@thewanderingrey8830
@thewanderingrey8830 9 месяцев назад
1. There are 2 Golden urns; one in Jokhang Temple, Lhasa - one in Yonghe Temple, Beijing. 13th Dalai Lama was exempted from the Golden Urn process (and was granted by the Qing government) and the 14th Dalai Lama did not use this process. 2. Songtsen Gampo's palace had already become a ruin by the time of the 5th Dalai Lama - that the Potala Palace was established on its grounds was true but it required an entirely new construction on site, which is why it takes a while to build it.

@upgraydez all these small clips don’t represent the actual seen some of them clips are remdomly thrown in or nothing to with topic. In Tibetan Buddhist culture, Darma U Dum Tsen was said to be the incarnation of Gośīrṣa, the Ox-Head and Horse-Face guardian of hell, thus he got the nickname, Langdarma, literally, "Darma killer” Last king of Tibet Langdarma was said to have had "a black tongue", and a common gesture of Tibetans briefly sticking out their tongues is interpreted to show agreement, and as a sign of respect. When they demonstrate that they do not have black tongues, they show they are not guilty of evil deeds, and that they are not incarnations of the malevolent king.

@user-li8sm6ft5b
@user-li8sm6ft5b 9 месяцев назад
@user-li8sm6ft5b

@@user-li8sm6ft5b I am an overseas ethnic Chinese (4th generation) and know little on Chinese history and hence I find this channel informative and intriguing and trying to absorb as much as I can. It always fascinates me how tiny nomadic tribes can rule over a population multiple their size and hold power for such a long time. There must be certain mechanism they possess to threaten the conquered land into submission. Both the Mongols and Manchus had conquered China for a long time. This is unlike the European powers that possess superior firearms and cannons even though their invading force were tiny too, hence they were able to colonise the world for centuries. Today, it is a different story. Even the US could not hold down Iraq and Afghanistan for too long due to strong resistance. Perhaps modern communication technology plays a role in organising rebels which people of the 18th and 19th century did not have, save for the ingenuity of secret messages buried in mooncakes used to depose the Mongols. In response to your comment on capitalism, I would like to recommend you to read up on the work of Professor Michael Hudson. He has been lecturing at a university in Beijing, Wuhan and Hong Kong and has written a great book call "Super Imperialism" which has been translated into Chinese. In it, he differentiates between Industrial Capitalism and Financial Capitalism. The former refers to businesses making profits through producing goods and services while the later refers to speculative activities making what he calls "unearned profits" and creates a "rentier class" that is bad for any economy. I believe his book has caught the attention of policy makers in Beijing which has led to the recent drastic measures in clamping down on property developers and some internet platform activities. On the Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution, there are reasons behind and it is beyond the scope of this discussion to get into such complex issues. I agree with you totally that it has left a black mark on Chairman Mao but it was good intention that went horribly wrong.

This video helped shed some light for me on the great curiosity I had about the fate of the Mongols, why did they fade from the modern era after having conquered the largest area in the world ever? Thank you for your amazing effort compiling this. There's very little known about the historical connections between the Central, Southern, and Eastern Asian regions(specifically the interactions between Tibetans, Mongolians, Nepalese, Chinese, etc., and the connections between the peoples of Tibeto-Burman language family). I haven't had the chance to learn about all the history of Buddhism and Hinduism but wanted to ask if you would ever consider making videos on one of the oldest forms of Buddhism(Newar Buddhism), which also has many connections with Tibetan Buddhists who actually first learned of Buddhism in the 7th century through their exchanges with the earlier Buddhist disciples from India and the Newars. (There's also a clan inside the Newar Buddhist community called the Shakya. I could totally be wrong about this but I've always wondered if they are related to or are the real life descendants of the kingdom from which the actual Shakyamuni Buddha was from! There is a Shakya kingdom shown in ancient Indian maps located in the general region where Buddha was found to be from and I've heard a story speculating that the Shakyas migrated into Kathmandu from this region but there's not much studies done on this topic). I myself am agnostic and don't observe any religion but have always found this history to be so fascinating, as something that everyone who admires Buddhism struggles with is how to incorporate this wonderful belief system into their lives in a way that is flexible to our modern lives. After all, we cannot all be monks or nuns and renounce worldly matters. So in the way of this topic it surprises me how *little* is known about the Newar Buddhism of Nepal. It would be fascinating for all history geeks if you made videos exploring the Newars and their take on the wisdoms of Buddha that I think fits more into the modern lives for the vast majority of us. By the way a fun fact: Remember you visited that giant white stupa in Miaoying temple of Beijing that you said a Nepalese artist Araniko built for the Yuan dynasty? Well that Araniko was initially sent by the Newar King Jayabhimdeva Malla to Tibet with the 5th leader of Sakya sect of Tibetan Buddhism Chogyal Phagpa to construct a golden stupa, initiated into monkhood there, was then sent on to work and teach in the court of emperor Kublai Khan(while Phagpa became the 1st imperial preceptor of Yuan dynasty) and led teams of artists and craftsmen to build several Pagoda structures in both China and Tibet. Pagoda structures were already taken to China from Kathmandu as early as the 7th century, which I suspect was the first cultural exchange in Asian history that transferred the pagoda architecture to East Asia from Nepal. It gets more interesting, the artist Araniko was Newar himself. Newars have been known as the greatest artisans and architects in all of the Himalayan societies, with Kathmandu compared to the creations of Italy and Persia and Newar cities termed as "Florence of the East". The artistic excellence of Newars was so greatly coveted that they were requested to bring their talents into their dynasties by Chinese emperors, Mongolian emperors, as well as Bhutanese Zhabdrungs, and the leaders of Tibetan Buddhism, thereby teaching their craft to the Bhutanese population unfamiliar with gold smith work and bronze work, and Chinese artisans. They left a lasting influence in the culture of Tibet, Mongolia, Bhutan, and China (and subsequently the far east in Japan and Korea where pagoda structures became prominent after China. Amongst the Newars there has been historically two major religions, Hinduism and Buddhism. It is also popularly known that in Nepal these two religions coexist alongside each other and even has incorporated elements from both that has long been practiced by Newars. I really see this mindset of syncretism as the way of the future. Learning from various beliefs and adding on to what we already know, which is also done by many dharmic faiths such as the biggest one of course Hinduism. The Buddhists of Newar ethnicity do not become monks or nuns but incorporate the various knowledge of the Buddha while simultaneously living a life more in equilibrium with modern times. The syncretic history of Newars includes traditions such as reincarnation culture similar to Tibetans and as you've taught us, of Mongolians for a while. But the reincarnation tradition in Newar culture was started as both a Buddhist and Hindu practice and is understood to symbolize the coexistence of both religions, (the Newar reincarnation tradition had received negative attention from western journalists in the early 2000s as the most popular of the avatars (there are multiple) is female and the specific myth of the goddess associated with the Royal Kumari Avatar requires their caretakers to ensure they do not bleed before natural menstruation, which explains why the Royal Kumari is not supposed to be walking outside the royal palace due to many dangers that may inflict wounds. However she does walk outside on carpets laid by her caretakers during festivals and has been playing inside the royal house with friends and family regularly). The Sino phobic elements in the west eagerly propped up the Tibetan issue for political gain and did not make any noise about the reincarnation and monkhood traditions of Tibetan Buddhism that traps the monk child/selected Dalai lama for life, but they were very noisy about the Kumari tradition where the Avatars only reign up until a certain age(with ritual duties as required during important days and festivals but also have access to education and enrichment) and resume a regular life with careers if they choose after their reign. It is another fascinating exchange of political ambitions between not only Tibet, Nepal, China, and Mongolia but now the West in its attempts to put itself in the forefront of the new world order. Religion and by its medium, culture and art, and the exoticism or denial of it is all determined by the political order that is current in any given time period and it's just so fascinating to see how different cultures and peoples interact with each other. Thanks for this video again!

Thank you, thank you, and thank you for sharing such in-depth information with me and all of us. I am in awe. I didn't know Araniko was a Newar. Northern India's iron grip on this entire half of the world (through Buddhism, a sect of the controversial Hindu "religion" AND STATE) is the most humiliating thing to ever occur at a PREVIOUS point in time to any people ever. It is very strange to say this to you people on RU-vid, but to be honest, I'm grateful for anything that Europe/Europeans/Russians have done in order to intimidate/weaken these "Tibetans" and their Northern Indian commanders. It has been SO DIFFICULT to clean the Middle East (the cleanup was a failure), and Muslims certainly aren't going to do a DAMNED thing to rebel against their Northern Indian "counterparts" (they barely differ at all). They perpetuated UNIMAGINABLE atrocities against the expansion of the respectable "East Asian" families which traversed Asia as pioneers of not only the environment, but also of Man[kind]: they undoubtedly progressed the development of both "Nature" and "Nurture" THROUGH having a government based on accountability (the "center of gravity" of which was a court which Actually relied on Evidence in order to convict criminals -- embarrassingly, this was a new concept to peoples like mine at that time), literacy (of officials), and appropriate dialogues. Civilizedness and manners were "imported" from them, to say the least (we are still indebted because of their valiant/noble/fruitful efforts to bring everyone to the same page as Koreans -- whether or not that means we will still remain far "behind" the "Chinese". The area of the world known as "The 'Stans" was a place where many hundreds of thousands of them, as migrants, were massacred during their retreat (which occurred over centuries). The cities in that region are still mostly located on passes through mountain ranges (this was not for the purpose of collecting taxes/tariffs/etc on internationally shipped commodities: this was for killing migrants and then collecting bounties. I would imagine Native Americans to have collected similar bounties in exchange for the scalps of African-Americans, Europeans, and Whoever Else There Were Bounties On)

"India's iron grip on this entire half of the world" It probably applies to subcontinent but I think all east asian counties consider the buddhism a beautiful gift. The religion is hard to escape for the lives of the mass grass roots in ancient times since it captures the human nature (or weakness). The buddhism is happen to be very compatible with the ancient Chinese society especially as a complement of the Taoism which lacks the serious religious characteristics compare to others. Of course the buddhism of China is different from the OG buddhism and Tibetan buddhism, it was modified and also assimilated into Taoism.

Tibetans and Mongols have had close connections before there was even a China, Tibet or Mongolia! I don't ever assume when it comes to Asian people but I do have some generalizations. Japanese Korean and Northern Chinese are very pale with some of the prettiest girls in the world. Mongolians tend to be darker because they spend more time in the sun. They also have a lot of Turkish Russian and other admixture. Tibetans are similar to vedic Hindus in many ways while southeast Asians are darker with a lot of dravidian admixture and Philippinos sound almost Spanish. How bad did I do? God bless you. And by the way no matter what your culture is I love you. Besides that I have a lot of love and respect for all Asian people. I'm not your stereotypical typical Nazi😊

That was a fascinating story of spirituality, religion, wars and politics that was completely new to me as a westener seeking to learn what I can about China, Tibet, Buddhism and everything in between. I live in Jerusalem which was and still is a center for neverending religious turmoil and conquests. I grew up to believe this is a core part of monotheism, but with time I've learnt how far this story about human nature goes. Hoping to learn more on these topics on your channel, that was an excellent film and production! Blessings :)

Are you proud of Tibet and in Mongolia Colonisation?
@ZHLi-op4kc
@ZHLi-op4kc 9 месяцев назад
@@dreamadventure8220 No, it's called merger and assimilation. Mongolia, Tibet and China once jointly submitted to the rule of the Aisin Gioro royal family. China's merger of Tibet and Inner Mongolia cannot be said to be colonization, but a merger similar to the Austrian Habsburg Empire.

It is only scratching the surface of the history iceberg. The untold story is many times greater than revealed in this video.

True! I cut at least 2/3 of the script to make it more accessible for viewers. I also had many “long story short” in the video. There are several Tibetan Regents and Mongol Khans I wish I had more time to discuss. Maybe in a different video. :)
