How Tiger Hill And Tololing Peaks Were Captured Against All Odds |

In April-early May 1999, Col. Khushal Thakur, Commanding officer of 18 Grenadiers, deployed in Kashmir Valley, had gone on annual leave when the unit was ordered to move into the Kargil-Dras sector as the inputs about intrusions by Pakistani forces started getting alarming by the day. As part of the 56 Brigade (belonging to 8 Mountain Division), the unit under the leadership of its second-in-command Lt Col. R. Vishwanathan, the unit moved to Dras and was told to evict 'some' Pakistani intruders sitting atop the Tololing peak and Point 4590. Days after the battalion had reached Dras, Col Thakur (who had by then cut short his leave), made the first recce of the area even as ammunition and other stores were being dumped along the Bhimbat nallah.
In his assessment, there were more than half a dozen terrorists, as was initially thought. The earlier battalion had been unable to make much progress and every time a patrol approached the peak, it came under intense fire. Thakur surmised it was a professional and well-trained force, well armed and well-trained was perched at the top and was pinning down any Indian assault. He wanted more time and more firepower before launching an attack. But the Brigade HQ and senior officers were getting impatient and tried to put pressure on 18 Grenadiers. Thakur and his 2IC Vishwanathan had meanwhile moved up to be near the attacking force and provide leadership.
Despite their best efforts however, success was proving to be elusive. At one point, an angry and desperate brigade commander Brig Amar Aul of 56 Brigade told Thakur to hand over the command of the battalion to his second-in-command Vishwanathan. A fine officer that he was, Vishwanathan refused, saying he could not do any better than what Thakur was doing. Shortly after this incident, 18 Grenadiers did manage to help 2 Raj Rif in gaining the first significant victory in the Kargil war but at considerable cost. Thakur saw Vishwanathan die in his lap and was witness to so many of his men and JCOs sacrificing their lives. A month later, 18 Grenadiers also recaptured Tiger Hill.
Part II of our series on # Kargil #india #indianarmy #pakistan
Now, a quarter century later, standing at the base of the Tololing peak and in the shadow of Tiger Hill, Thakur, who later commanded the very Brigade and retired as a Brigadier, recalls those difficult days in this conversation, done mostly in Hindi. Guaranteed to give you goosebumps.

Naman to all the Brave Sainik of my motherland!! Who gave 'Sarvocch Balidaan' and a 'slap' to our lack of intelligence!! Brig. Thakur, thought, they are terrorists!! Couldn't cut the supply line, because of the height advantage of the enemy!! Hope, this 'Grave Mistake' doesn't happen again!! Bharat Mata ki Jai Ho!!!

Behind.Tololing and pt 5140 lies Shailendra Spur. Pak had constr bunkers with a novel method to provide protection from our Artillery fire - the top of the bunkers in this complex was ( its still there ) made of steel reinforced concrete columns stacked loosely & horizontally on top of each other This mesh of concrete was so strong that one shell landing directly would takeout only one pillar while the ones stacked under it were untouched ....therefore the troops under were very well protected from indian artillery under layers of such pillars which was their overhead protection This indicated that there was adequate time to construct this complex . Given that there are only a few months available each year in the summers . My estimate would be that it took at least three years to make such a complex . But as luck would have it that after the fall of foward features like like Hump , three pimples and Tololing & 5140 and Area Hotel subsequently the morale was too low when the fight reached this area and the Enemy simply abandoned these defences .....not having the heart to fight as he was already outflanked

Nitin sir, can you kindly give figures of our causalities during Tololing and tiger hill attack though Gen Thakur said around 30s. Also most important, once they reached Tololing and tiger hill, how many enemy bodies did they find there ?

Once all weather Zojila tunnel completes in 2027, connectivity to Srinagar, Dras, Kargil, Minamarg, Leh will be within hours rather than a day during Kargil war times. From military aspect the Zojila portals will be a game changer.

Why we are only dependent on potters for supply we should have a mechanized system for supply to the ridges in ladak sector?which could be made possible through the chains of lifts to every military post from the base lines

Chital was a part of princely state of Jammu and Kashmir. It was carved away from jk to form different "agency" during 'great game' days as "agencies" in late 1880's by the British agents posted over there.

Yeah, remember the Lal post the graveyard of poor paxtani soldiers. In today's economic situation paxtan do not have any resources to acclimatize the frosted freezing winter weather, because of lack of funds. Paxtan also keep talking about their soldiers in west Siachen glacier, but not a single soldier currently hold a single square inch , they're in Dansam and Skardu, which according to paxtan army is Siachen 😂😂
