How Tire Rolling Resistance Affects Cycling Speed ?

What is rolling resistance ? And why should you think about it on your bike? Rolling resistance is the energy lost by the tires deforming as the wheels turn. It is simply the friction between your tires and the road. The greater the friction, the slower you will go.

Brilliant summary, thanks. Tyres really are the absolute best value-for-money way to change the feel or performance of a bike.

The mass of wheels has very minimal impact on acceleration, you can work out the math relatively easily, I've got a spreadsheet for it. The differences in wheel mass are small and the acceleration rates of cyclists is low, when you do the math wheel weight is barely any different than weight anywhere else, and only in extreme scenarios like a 1,000 watt surge from low speed.

Tubeless tires are clincher tires. When did we start saying that they're not? On tire pressure, it would have been good to note that going too low increases rolling resistance. One should aim for the "right" pressure.

all tubeless are clinchers, but not all clinchers are tubeless. I guess it's just simpler to differentiate like that - tubeless means no tube inside and clincher means a tube inside. Kind of the same deal with clipless pedals that you actually clip in to.

Could you do a real test (with sensors) to measure and prove what you say? If you need an engineering support, I am available! :-D

Im 200 lbs there is no bouncing anything on a regular road even with maximum pressure. If you are bouncing around so much that your get airborne, you will not have complete control of the bike and will most likely crash
@marcuswills6569
@marcuswills6569 Месяц назад
Its unlikely that you would actually feel like the bike is bouncing it happens so quickly, but is considerably slower.

@@marcuswills6569 if you really look at it, its the material that makes rolling resistance low. What if, they make 35mm tires material have less rolling resistance than 25mm, to grease up production and profit.... my money is on greed.
@goingtothefifty
@goingtothefifty Месяц назад
@@marcuswills6569 its the material that makes for lower rolling resistance. Its physically impossible for a larger tire with lower pressure to have less contact point than skinnier tire with higher pressure (as Area = Force / Pressure) otherwise F1 racing cars would have 25mm tires...LOL. My bet is that all about profit and greed

@@goingtothefiftyapparently a wide but smaller (from front and back) contact point is better than a narrower and longer one. For me, this is counterintuitive considering cars. Narrower tires makes for more fuel economy in cars, so I'm left scratching my head over the idea if wider is better. The bouncing effect is just a fancy name for tire skid, and I agree that this seems far fetched. I don't see my rock hard tire skipping.
@goingtothefifty
@goingtothefifty 27 дней назад
@@fernosan I dont think that its counterintuitive because if you let air pressure off the tire gets more contact and its gets harder to pedal, and that is testable by yourself. However a 25mm gatorskin vs 25mm grand prix, you can tell the difference.
