How to 3D Model a Cookie Cutter in Fusion 360 (for 3D Printing) // By the end of this video, you’ll know how to 3D model a cookie cutter in Fusion 360.
With most designs, you’ll want to start off with a reference image. I’ve gone ahead and attached a heart silhouette in the video description. To insert the reference image I’ll select the “attached canvas” option in the toolbar. Then, I’ll select the XY origin plane for the face and I’ll select the image from my local machine.

I use Fusion exclusively for making my own cookie cutters, fondant cutters, impression stamps and tools for baking, and using in making cookies. I already know how to make cookie cutters and I am trying to work to work on putting my logo on the side of the cutter, along with the name of the cutter. I know how to label them, but for some odd reason, I haven't been able to make my logo (my mark) for adding to the cutters as well. I like for my cutter to have a nice rounded handle on the bottom, and then a support wall, then the cutting edge. This gives the cutter better strength. Then, if I want to add words, I try to make an embosser to go inside of the cutter. I prefer having a cookie embosser to match the outside cutter, but most of my cutters are just the outside, and then I create cookie stamps for words and designs on them. I appreicate your courses on Fusion 360. It is one heck of a program, and I don't use hardly any of it's functionality. But it is my preferred program for making my own cutters.

Hi, John. Glad to hear you're enjoying this. There are two mirror commands, one for the sketch environment and one for the model environment. It's likely that you're using the wrong one, which is prohibiting you from being able to select the sketch (in this case, the spline). Make sure you're in your sketch environment. If not, double-click on the sketch to re-activate it. Then, activate the shortcuts box with the keyboard letter "S". Type out "Mirror" and you'll see there are actually 4 different mirror commands (the other two are for sculpting). You'll need the SKETCH mirror command which is the first one, or the one that doesn't have a filled-in blue triangle, as seen (circled) here - snipboard.io/EA6Vt3.jpg While in an active sketch environment you will see the sketch mirror command under the "Create" dropdown list, but note that you must be under the SKETCH tab of the toolbar. When under the SOLID tab, the "Create" dropdown list will have the solid modeling mirror command for 3D bodies, features, and components. Let me know if that was it! Cheers, Kevin :)

Thank you. Can you do a tutorial of a single complex 3-D cookie cutter that has two different cutting depths (e.g. one to cut the dough and one to imprint design lines for decorating)? It would be similar to "embossing" the cookie but you wouldn't need a separate cookie cutter.

I love the idea of the mirror function, does this work from if you have to use both the fit point spline and line sketch for a unique design? When I tried to mirror it had all my lines as seperate pieces and I couldn’t select the entire ‘half’ of my image
@ProductDesignOnline
@ProductDesignOnline 4 года назад
Hi Hannah. If you have several sketch objects then you'll need to select all of them (or whichever ones you want to be mirrored). Just note that there is a SKETCH mirror command and a MODEL mirror command. Make sure you activate the correct mirror command while in the SKETCH tab in the toolbar... that may have been the issue!

This tutorial was so helpful thank you! I had a question, what if i wanted to make a cookie cutter & then a seperate cutter which was the same shape but didn't actually cut out the dough but instead just embossed it. So for example a love heart cookie cutter to cut out the cookie dough & then a seperate heart which has "be mine" to stamp the fondant creating an embossed style? Not sure if this makes sense but basically i am wanting to create cookies with details on them instead of just the outline of the shape.

Is there an easy way to resize to a specific size? I used the scale command (non uniform to only stretch X and Y) but this requires some math or guesswork to get the proper size. Say I made a 3 inch heart, but I also want a 4 inch and a 2.5 inch. The 4 inch is easy enough to do in my head (scale 1.33) but the 2.5 would require a calculator. Basically, I would like to add a dimension, but be able to change it for the whole design. I tried dimensioning across the heart but it distorts...

What filament and nozzle do you recommend when printing food stuff like these ?
@ProductDesignOnline

Hi, Kimberly. That's a great question. I recommend using PETG filament when possible. I've linked to my favorite in the description. Otherwise, PLA is the safer route over ABS and other alternatives. For the nozzle size, I use a standard 0.4mm nozzle. I print them with a 0.15mm layer height unless there are really fine details (an embossser) you can use a 0.1mm. Cheers, Kevin :)

Hi, Shan. It sounds like you're wanting to add a taper to the shape, so the bottom is more narrow? If so, you can use the "Chamfer" tool from the SOLID tab. It will be found under the modify dropdown list. Select the bottom edge and then set the taper by adjusting the chamfer distance in both directions.

Couldn’t you also use a program like inkscape and do the auto bitmap trace to get an outline then put it in the fusion 360 as an svg.
@ProductDesignOnline
@ProductDesignOnline 3 года назад
You could...but SVGs are a slippery slope with Fusion 360. They recreate all the imported SVG lines as native sketch geometry. Sometimes that creates hundreds or thousands of little line segments. Consequently, there are certain modeling command that then become much harder to use - chamfer, fillet, sweep etc...anything where you have to select continuous edges.

I'm trying to scale my cookie cutter, but when scaling the original spline sketch it completely demorphs. How do properly scale my cookie cutter?
@ProductDesignOnline
@ProductDesignOnline 5 лет назад
Hi, casinomann. Are you scaling the sketch with the sketch "scale" tool or are you scaling the model with the modeling scale tool? I would suggest scaling the sketch. Or, if you're 3d printing the object/using it in a third party software scaling the object there. Unfortunately, scaling sketches with splines in Fusion 360 can be tricky...and it doesn't always work. It depends on the complexity of the spline...sometimes the sketch "Scale" tool does work. Cheers, Kevin :)
@casinomann
@casinomann 5 лет назад
@@ProductDesignOnline Thanks for the answer! Following this tutorial, scaling the sketch made it go completely bonkers. Some guy suggested making the sketch with control point splintes(?) instead, as then it was more easily scalable, but I've yet to do so. Scaling it in a slicer would be more problematic, as I would much less accurately know it's size.
@ProductDesignOnline
@ProductDesignOnline 5 лет назад
@@casinomann That's correct, the "Control Point Splines" can be dimensioned easier. However, that doesn't mean it will naturally scale easily with the sketch scale tool. The benefit is that you can update the dimensions to get the Control Point Spline to update accordingly, where the Fit Point Spline is very hard to dimension. Cheers, Kevin :)

@ProductDesignOnline

@@spencers2144 There are two ways to scale it. First, you could scale the sketch with the "Sketch Scale" feature in the Modify dropdown of the SKETCH tab. Second, would be to scale the body. Hi Kevin, I figured it out. I wasn't placing the text on the face. I was placing text on just the canvas, ha. I could move the cookie cutter and the text remained on the canvas. I wasn't first selecting the face to put my text on. Also, I don't think I really need to constrain the spline, it turned out fine anyway. This is a great tutorial! I learned a lot.Thanks!

@@leeancaljw Thanks for the info! I use Ultimaker's Cura for my slicing software. The few cookie cutters I printed out I just used Cura's preset settings of "Normal" (.15mm) since its a fairly basic object with light use expected. The only setting I change is the infill. Based on the cookie-cutter design I typically bump up the infill to 60-80% so the inside components or side walls don't end up as fragile. It takes significantly longer (a few hours) but is probably worth it in terms of making the cookie-cutter last a lot longer. Image for reference - snipboard.io/tW4KQI.jpg Cheers, Kevin :)

Hi, Flyith. Sorry I did not see your reply earlier. Did you end up getting the letters to stay on any better? Looking at your file, the letters are quite thin with that text. It's probably going to be hard at that scale without having a commercial-grade 3d printer. You could try to add a "draft" or fillet to the bottom where the letters touch the face plate. How do I add just a small tab on the cutter and text to tell what the cutter is? Attached phot is not my cutter. It’s an example of what I’m wanting to do. photos.app.goo.gl/TXgm14aek4DvWZNFA
@ProductDesignOnline
@ProductDesignOnline 4 года назад
Hi, Misty. Thanks for sharing the photo. This is a neat "upgrade" to the cutter. You'll need to create a new sketch on the top surface. Based on the photo you provided, it appears that the shape follows the same curve. If you want the text area to follow the same shape then you can use the "offset" tool in the sketch dropdown list. Offset the edge to your desired distance, making sure there's enough room of an icon or text. Then, you'll have to use the line tool to connect the offset sketch at each end. Next, use the extrude tool to create thickness for this closed profile. Once you've created that shape you'll be able to use the "text" tool under the sketch dropdown list to sketch on the surface of the shape. Then, you can simply extrude the text away by setting the Extrude operation to "cut". I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any follow up questions. Cheers, Kevin :)
