How to 3D Model a Screwdriver in Fusion 360 // Welcome to Day #14 of Learn Fusion 360 in 30 days. By the end of this tutorial, you’ll be able to 3D model your very own screwdriver, which of course, could be 3D printed and actually used. We’ll take a look at how to create components driven off of previous components, and we’ll cover the 3-point arc sketch feature.

Hi Kevin, I was having trouble selecting the corner point when creating the tip, so I restored the default settings per your suggestion, and now when I go to dimension ".5mm" from the edge of the tip face to the center point I can no longer snap to the center point. How do I fix that?
@djjarami9
@djjarami9 3 года назад
Kevin, I was having the same problem many of the other users here were having with the 3-point-arc not sticking to the tip component. When zoomed in I noticed the tip was slightly off the center axis. The problem is with the creation of the hole. When you create the hole it does not automatically constrain it to the center of the front axis. You must drag the hole until it clicks into place so Fusion 360 applies the constraint to center it on the axis. "Auto Project Edges on Reference" is part of the problem, but also, centering the hole is the other part.

The fillet command makes a huge difference :) I once had a Professor who preached that every corner should have a fillet, even if the smallest, unless its a sharp knife. When you look at all the objects around you, you start to realize that's true! Cheers, Kevin :)

At 11:30 How did you manage to make a dimension between the arc and the center origin of the tip? Auto project edges on reference is already marked. I can make a dimension to the upper/lower edge of the tip, but not to its center.
@permagnusandersson6052
@permagnusandersson6052 Год назад
same here! I just helped myself by creating a construction line from the end of the arc to the center of the tip and setting the dimension for it at 0.5mm. Then I moved the endpoint of the construction line with the arc attached to it to the center of the tip. It will snap into place and it will keep the dimension. I have made a vertical constraint for the construction line but I don't know if that is needed.
@ducobie8508
@ducobie8508 Год назад
The problem I had was that the second point of the arc didn't snap to the top of the cylinder properly. Once I zoomed out and tried the arc procedure again, I could see the second point snap to the top, then I was able to set the distance of 0.5mm. I hope this helps.
@permagnusandersson6052

For me also the dimension from arc to center could not be set and I also could not mirror the feature of the tip... It would really be great, if you could make a new series with the newest version of Fusion 360. Edit: I think the problem for why I can't mirror is, that the midpoint of the tip is not the actual midpoint. I have no idea how to change that... This tutorial has not worked for me...

If you can't set the dimension from arc to center in the tip: I just helped myself by creating a construction line from the end of the arc to the center of the tip and setting the dimension for it at 0.5mm. It's exceedingly helpful to see you build an actual assembly and talk your way through why you do certain things. As opposed to talking about a concept and just explaining the concept. I find your approach to teaching very good. I know this is 3 years old, but I'm in here and I'm learning and I really appreciate it.

Same issue here, let's see if someone knows the answer. What I did was creating a 2 point circle between the top and the bottom of the extruded surface, so I get the midpoint of the circle, allowing me to use the Dimension tool between the arc and the circle's midpoint. Anyway, there should be a better way of doing this.

@Lone Crew by Newaj After struggling and questioning my life choices, I took a chance and figured out something similar. Here is what I did. After creating the 3 point arc, select the FRONT view. Use the Dimension tool (D) and selected the first endpoint of the arc (it should appear as a black dot). Then hover the mouse down slightly toward the center and a white dot appears. That's the center point. Click on it and change the view back to the RIGHT. From there you can hover your mouse between those points and click to access the dimension to change it to 0.5mm. I hope this helped someone out there. Oh, btw this was done on the latest version of Fusion 360 on a Mac (10.15.7).

Thank you for your detailed tutorials. I have learned much and can't wait to try out all these things. One thing which struck me immediately about this tutorial was the lack of a flare (grip) in the shank inside the handle to hold the shank in place so it doesn't turn when in use. I was hoping this would part of the tutorial as I can't see how one could design something inside something else and print a handle and then insert a shank with the flare/grip/wings.

Great video! Quick question though... For the shank, instead of a circular hole, wouldn't it be more realistic to model it with a hex or square shape so the shank can't turn within the handle? Sorry to nitpick. Aside from that this video is perfect! Keep up the great work.

Great work! You're making great progress. I do recommend the 3DConnexion space mouse if you plan on using Fusion 360 on a daily basis. They take a little bit of time to get used to...they include some practice games... but once you do it will make it much easier to rotate your model and keep your mouse where you're working without having to constantly go to the viewcube.

I seem to be stuck where many people are, with the darn tip. I added the 3 point arc, but my problem is with first dimension on the tip after creating the arc. When I try the way you do it, I can snap to the endpoint of the arc, but but the centerpoint of the tip. If instead I try to create the sketch by selecting the front face of the tip, then I can snap to both the end of the arc and the center of the face, but then it tells me that I'm over-constrained and only lets me add the driven dimension. So I'm not sure what is going on. And I checked my settings, and they seem ok from what I can tell, especially the "Auto project edges on reference" and the snap. Thanks!

Question: how do you decide on the fillet radii of the different edges? Is it simply a matter of experience? Random? Can you give us some guidance on this?
@ProductDesignOnline
@ProductDesignOnline 5 лет назад
Hi, StepInIsrael. Great question - it really depends on the object and what you're trying to achieve. In product design there are some standards based on the required type of manufacturing process. For example, all plastic objects (injection molded) will generally have at least a 1mm-2mm fillet so they don't have a sharp edge. With that said, whether you're designing for 3D-printing or another type of design, it will require trial and error. Generally, you'll need to try different fillet radiuses out and see how that affects the appearance as well as other manufacturing considerations. Thanks for asking this. I'll try to talk about this more in one of my tutorials. Cheers, Kevin :)

first off - so cool - I think components are finally sinking in! Question - why not create the fillet on the hole in the screwdriver handle BEFORE creating the pattern? Then wouldn't the pattern replicate the fillet also? or is there a reason not to do that I am missing? It would also be cool to demonstrate changing the handle hole size again after making to tip to see all of them being modified. Thanks

Great tutorials! The only problems I have are usually just the differences between the old and new software version. Like not being able to choose sketch commands until picking a plane and clicking create sketch. My problem on this one is that with the shank as the active component, I can not extrude from the hole in the handle. I simply can not select the handle at all. Auto project edges is turned on, everything else is default (2019) I just figured out that if I select the top level (screwdriver) I can extrude from that and it put the extrusion in the shank component. For the tip I made screwdriver active, extruded from the shank and selected new component in the extrude menu
@ProductDesignOnline
@ProductDesignOnline 4 года назад
Hi, slash09r1. I would recommend using the shortcuts box (keyboard letter "S") to search for sketch commands. That's one easy way to activate sketch commands without being in an active sketch environment. For the shank, you'll want to make sure that you have the "Shank" component active. Then, select the inside face of the handle and hit the keyboard shortcut "P" for the project. That should let you project the sketch (circle) before you extrude it. Projecting the sketch will make sure your circle adapts to the size of the handle if its ever changed. Don't hesitate to comment if you run into any more roadblocks. Cheers, Kevin :)

Hi, Robert. You could certainly do it either way - I try to break down shapes into basic forms before adding any complex geometry. In a small item like this it wouldn't matter much... however, in larger assembly files it can be hard to go back and alter previous steps (in a predictable way), especially when the revolve tool and some other commands are used. Hey Kevin: As always loved your video. Kinda of easier as I move through them. I am no longer making basic mistakes. For example, I thought I knew how to cleanly use the line tool. I did not... This Screwdriver video is simply amazing! Oh, my God! However, I had a ton of trouble making that cut of the tip head near the end, at 11:30. I kept getting that constraint error. (I could never see the point.) Tried redoing from the beginning about 4 times. I finally fixed the problem, by adding a point to the origin, then redoing the Dimension step... I am 99% happy with the experience, but for that last 1%, any ideas why that happened? I checked all my setting multiple times comparing them to yours. As Always, Thanks! Rob Stay Healthy!

I'm having an issue with creating the tip. When trying to create the arc, it doesn't snap to the top edge of the extruded cylinder. Then when you try to create the dimension to constrain the edge of the arc to .5 millimeters from the center, the dimension won't snap to the center. I have checked all of my settings. Hi Kevin, My center circle wont snap like yours does at 2:32. My cursor turns into an X when it reaches the edge of the circle and snaps to it, but moves freely around the circles edge. I simply drew a construction line from the center to the edge of the circle at 90 degrees, so the cursor would snap to the circles edge at 90 degrees but still lost as to why it wont snap like yours. Similarly, at 11:40 where you dimension one end of the arc to the center of the tip, I can't get the dimension too to snap to the center. Only way I could do this is create a point in the center of the tip and dimension to that OR turn the model so the origin is visible (ie at the back of the handle) and dimension to that.

Hey, At 11:28 I couldn’t dimension the point of the curve to the centre of the bit because the centre point wasn’t provided. Even after following each step meticulously, the centre point wasn’t there. So I deleted the arc line sketch and made a new one, planed on the end bit of the …bit…, drew two perpendicular construction lines (letting them snap on so they were strictly vertical or horizontal) and manually added a point via Sketch - Point where the construction lines crossed. I switched to the YZ plane and continued along since I now had a centre point to which I could dimension the 3-point arc.

I'm using the latest version of Fusion 360, 2.0.8111, which is obviously newer than what you're using. Unfortunately, one of the changes/improvements that they made makes it hard to follow what you're doing in this tutorial. At the very beginning after you've created the handle component and go to create the first sketch and center circle, those options are not available on this latest version until you click on Create, Create Base Feature. Then you can go to the Create, Create Sketch and go from there. Unfortunately, the timeline then only shows Base Feature from that point on in terms of the Handle Component, so you can't edit any of the steps in the handle component creation later on. Is there some way to bypass this Create Base Feature step or at least enable the timeline for the handle component? Thanks.

Kevin, I figured it out in the sense that this is a bug in the latest update. When you click the create menu, it opens upward if there isn't enough room to display it all in the normal down direction. When it displays upwards, it only shows a couple items from the bottom of the menu; hence it looked like there were lots of items missing from the menu. Autodesk support says they hope to have a fix pushed out soon, but in the meantime, users can hit the "S" key and search for the command they want. You'd think they would test the releases a bit before sending them out into the ether!

Everything worked flawlessly until I hit 11:15 in the video. It is at this point where we are supposed to dimension the arc. When I hit "D" I can select the first point of the ellipse on the front edge of the cylinder, however when I hover over the area where the center of the cylinder should be it does not find it. However, I can find the center point at the back of the cylinder. If I use that as a reference I can dimension the height of the tip but when I try to click to set it gives me an error saying the sketch geometry is overconstrained. So I passed on that one and tried to dimension the top edge to 9 mm. I get the same error. I did this multiple times, creating the tip and then undoing back to the Extrude tip step. I tried inserting a circle on the face of the tip and inserting a point as suggested below. I also started from scratch twice but the problem remains the same each time. It can't find the center of the cylinder and when I do try to dimension it says the sketch geometry is over constrained. I checked my settings before I began to make sure "Auto project edges on reference" and it was set the same as Kevin's. If I skip the dimension step the remaining steps complete without any problem. I suspect there has been some changes in Fusion 360 since the video was released that is causing the issue. Any suggestions on how to resolve the issue?

Hi James. The auto project edges on reference setting should take care of it. If not, make sure you're looking directly at the sketch. It will not automatically project sketch objects if you are not. If that still doesn't seem to help then you can manually add a sketch point while in the sketch environment. that will allow you to dimension from that sketch point.

It wont let me snap to the end of the tip, even with snap on.

Hi, Mr. Marriott. That is likely due to an update in the F360 default settings. Check out my settings for comparison here - bit.ly/defaultsettings Try turning on the "Auto project edges on reference" setting as outlined on my default settings webpage. That should fix it...let me know if it doesn't! Cheers, Kevin :)

@@ProductDesignOnline I have the same problem. After I create the sketch for the tip, when trying to use the dimension function there's no center line or point to snap to. I verified that "Auto project edges on reference" is turned on.

@@boboscurse4130 The second thing to double-check would be to make sure your "snaps" option is turned on in the sketch palette. If you're still experiencing an issue after that, then please let me know. There shouldn't be anything else that would prohibit the snapping. Cheers, Kevin :)

Product Design Online Product Design Online i have snaps on and turned on auto project edges but still not able to create the dimension between the arc and center point. I am able to click on start of the arc but can’t click on the center origin of the tip. Well I can click, but nothing happens. I made sure those settings were correct and restarted Fusion360 but still no luck. Can u think of anything else i might check?

@@CarlosG2288 Having exact same problem. To work around it, I created a vertical line from the top of the tip down to the center line (3.5 mm) and then dimensioned from the end of the vertical line up to the end of the arc. Interestingly, Fusion had no problem "snapping" to the center line when I created that vertical line! However, when typing in the .5 dimension, Fusion crashed! Oh well, restart and continue.

At 8:52 (time), when i created the new component, named shank. Then it becomes difficult to see the component named 'handle'. It almost becomes transparent. So it becomes difficult to select and extrude. I am sharing link of image i captured of the situation: photos.app.goo.gl/u1FCLq17cXGhDFAS7 photos.app.goo.gl/eXvDGAYfffqtncAX8 [Somehow I managed to complete the project, that's why I am not sharing the fusion360 file] Thank you 😃😊

Hi, Sohan. That transparent appearance is because you have the "shank" component active, as denoted with that circle located just to the right of the component name. With Fusion 360 assemblies you can right click on components and activate them to make it easier to focus on that specific component. When you want all components to be active you will need to "activate" the top level component, which in your case is "SCREW DRIVER v1" at the top of your Fusion 360 browser. If you right click on "SCREW DRIVER v1" and select "activate" it should make the entire file opaque again. I hope this clears up any confusion! Cheers, Kevin :)
