As part of my 11,000 CD collection I have 103 banker style boxes cut down to the exact size for holding 90 CD’s each. These 103 boxes hold 9,270 CD’s perfectly and stack making storage easy. But people always want to know how do I access the boxes on the bottom? This video will go into detail, take you on a tour, and show you just how it all works!

It’s like a non-stop game of Tetris in that apartment. Just so you know, we all admire your organization and passion for collecting physical media. If you move to a bigger place, would love to see those architectural skills first hand to craft a custom made wraparound CD shelving system. I’d predict that video would have the largest number of views ever!

More power to you, Brendon, for having the passion and dedication to maintain such a huge collection, but for me, when it gets to the point where I wouldn't be able to display or access them conveniently, it'd become pointless and impractical. And as much as I love holding the physical medium and liner notes in my hands, there are high-quality streaming services available for anything I'll listen to only occasionally. Part of it is "the age thing": I'm only going to be around for a few more decades, so maintaining a huge collection just doesn't carry the importance it did when I was in my 20s or 30s. Not to put you down for doing so, of course, because I can understand the thrill of the hunt and the satisfaction of owning full discographies (of which I still have several, don't get me wrong!). Cheers!

Great efficient use of space, filling dead space. Practical to use stacks as end tables, Credenzas, etc. Could put a cloth table cover over a stack for waf, lamp on top. Yes, I am familiar with never ending Tetris game, but if enjoyable hobby, it's just more good physical activity, exercise 😝

🙂👍. Dedication and care! Way to go, Brendon! I applied your box creation video and love my results. I truly appreciate your sharing this storage solution. I do not have as many as you do, but it all works very well for me. I labeled mine with tidy removable alphabetical stickers. Left some room in each for integrating new ones. Have one or two boxes dedicated to brand new ones that are listened to and to be filed. For digpaks, I put them in archival sleeves and store them in cute little wooden crates that I find at the Dollar Tree. A couple of little white bookshelves hold these crates. I prefer jewel cases. I do have an inventory that I update regularly as well. I am just starting to enter my vinyl and CDs on Discogs. Rock on! - Heather.

You should invest in wooden produce crates for your vinyl records. Check your local grocer (or retailer where produce is sold) for that. Or buy a piece of furniture where you can place your turntable atop with a cupboard underneath to store your vinyl. That's what I have. I also have a wooden produce crate. And Brendon's boxes apparently came from Staples. I imagine you could order these online via Staples. Foot lockers work, too.

Amazing but wow what a huge effort and space killer. I only have a quarter of your collection as I sold off a big part of my collection that I never listened to but it never was or is going to be as big as yours. I stopped being an artist collector a long time ago - just buy the albums I know I will keep going back to or have a special place for me. About 10 years ago I invested in jewel sleeves and did away with the cases and store everything in drawers. This greatly reduced the amount of room I needed and the collection is in nice looking wooden drawers. One in the living room, one in the dining room and one in the study. That said I probably need to by another chest of drawers as they're all super tight so adding CDs has become harder as I store them alphabetically by artist (need to leave room for new additions). The other benefit is you can slip in CDs without the missus finding out about it as they're all tucked away - having to buy another chest of drawers though means there's a reckoning coming ;)

@BrendonSnyder
@BrendonSnyder 2 года назад
If the CD boxes are relatively full they are very strong. You don’t have to worry about the boxes crushing. But weight wise you do have to consider the space you live in. I live in a very old NYC apartment that have very large structural beams so i feel comfortable stacking 12 high, but that is a lot of weight. Regardless I do not believe it is enough to crash through the floor.

This is very impressive. I have about 3500 CDs and I have a small room / large closet that I keep most of them in. How do you know what is in each box? It would seem if you get a new CD, lots of CDs would have to be moved around in multiple boxes if you kept them in any sort of alphabetical order. BTW, how does the portable air conditioner work (at 2:38)? I was going to get one but I had heard mixed results on how well they work.
@BrendonSnyder
@BrendonSnyder 2 года назад
Hi Shane! Each stack is a genre and then the boxes are alphabetized. Regarding the A/C…after years of window units I like the portable much better. It’s quieter, and I can remove the hose from the window on days I’m not using it instead of always having the window open. In NYC the outside can be very noisy so I like to keep the windows shut if not running the AC. The brand that I bought is made by two groups Koldfront and Midea. I think one main company may own both.

So having 30 CD's from different bands to file away requires lots of labour and reorganising . Have you contemplated moving to a larger apartment or house ? Could the apartment hold 20,000 CDs?
@BrendonSnyder
@BrendonSnyder 2 года назад
Of course I’ve considered moving, but there are other factors. Yes the Apt. could handle as many I want. And I only file away and re-organize once maybe twice a year….usually in the Spring. That’s my version of Spring Cleaning. 😂

How do you decide what you want to hear? I have about 4000 CDs and 5000 LPs and often I stand before my collection and don't know what to play next.

Are the stacks of boxes (generally) in alpha order? In other videos, I know you've shown boxes for bands and related artists, CDs from the same genre, etc. Is that how most boxes are set up? Had my CDs in smaller boxes for awhile. Then, switched to larger storage totes (which was NOT the way to go). Finally, I got multiple shelving units, so I can access everything without having to dig. FYI -- Amazon was sold out of those Universal Japan reissues on day 1. Thankfully, importcds has them for (basically) the same price.

Hi Jared, yes all boxes are alphabetical. The big stacks of boxes, each row is a genre, and alphabetized. Probably should have mentioned that…😂

Appears you don't write on the ends of the box to describe contents. I assume this is to allow changing contents, box reuse One option is to use sticker labels on the end , allowing I'd by color, shape or write on sticker label. Label can be removed with heat gun to not damage box, then put another on to reuse, or just put another label on top of old one. Name of the game if going all in on large physical media collecting is lowest cost per unit of media for storage. I use scrap adhesive labels so added cost is "free"

That's great, but how do you know where is what? Let's say you want to listen to a specific cd, do you know in which box to find it? (alphabetical, x-cel document,...?). Cheers.

32 years of collecting and no not all are bought at full price. Lots are used and at lower prices. Still yes, it’s a lot of money. But then people who go drinking every weekend spend as much money. I don’t drink so for me it goes to CD’s.

An interesting video but you have to ask yourself do you really need that many CDs? There is pleasure in having a comprehensive collection which offers ease of access for sure. However when the boxes are creating all that clutter and a potential fire hazard it’s time to draw the line. I just wouldn’t want to go to a CD that was so inaccessible, for example in the bottom box of that wall of boxes. I would just pick something else. Also not being able to see the CDs to select from means you have to try to remember what’s in all the boxes - an impossible task! My suggestion is to cull it all to a max of 2000 and then cash in by selling the rest on eBay while they are still in demand! However the Grand Funk Trunk of Funk I spied on top of all the boxes is definitely a keeper!
@BrendonSnyder
@BrendonSnyder 2 года назад
Well a couple things Glenn, I’d question how die hard of a music fan you are if you can give up on what you want to hear because it’s not immediately accessible. That said, I think I showed you just how easy it all is so it’s not work for me. You do what you can with what you have and I think I make it work well. Now regarding your comment about this being a “fire hazard”. In what way makes any of this a fire hazard? First of all path of travel is not blocked, and if you’re referring to cardboard boxes being flammable, so is everything else in a home like carpet, curtains, furniture….all wood and fabrics which love to burn. But it’s also not like this can spontaneously combust so not sure how it’s going to suddenly catch fire and be a fire hazard. Remember I’m an architect, I wouldn’t create a life safety issue for myself.
