Thank you, thank you, thank you! You saved me a lot of stress. We recently had our roof redone, but either the pounding or a stray nail caused our breaker to trip. After testing with the mutlimeter, I found out there is a short in the line, most likely in the recessed lights. Unfortunately, there is no access to the attic space above the ceiling, so was thinking I needed to start cutting a big hole in my ceiling to look at the wiring. So glad I found your video of how to access the wiring from below. Wish I could like this video more than once, haha.

Thanks so much for this! During new construction, we had several lights on one circuit not working, metered it back to the problem, and used this video to find the easiest way to check that light. We found a wire had come loose from a push connector. This made it so simple to find! It's a little messier with blown-in insulation (!), but not bad if you're slow and careful - and going into the attic with that insulation would definitely not have been fun!

You just saved me having to hire an electrician to simply run a neutral wire so I could install a smart switch. I have super easy access to the switch box (the back of the switch is in a utility room in my basement) but I couldn't get to the can light in the adjacent (basement) hallway due to the tiny crawl space over the ceiling; so while I can get a wire over to the light I couldn't figure out how to actually get access to wire it. Ditto. This was what I was looking for. I was able to change out low voltage lighting without cutting drywall. Moved into a late-90's custom home and previous owner installed low voltage halogen lighting. I didn't know anything about indoor low voltage lighting. Lights didn't work and didn't know where to get bulbs and even so, the transformers could be bad. "Electrical" guy said I'd have to cut into drywall and cut out the cans and replace. Instead, with your video, I was able to access the j box and disconnect the transformer (and dimmer?? tube-like thing in knockout), remove and put in LED light. (Halogen lights do put out nice soft light though but they're hot.)

So if my cieling has this type of recessed can and I order lights that come with a junction box, can I connect them? If so how would that look, would I connect one junction box to the other one that came with the lights?
@Doityourselfwithjoe
@Doityourselfwithjoe 7 месяцев назад
If I am understanding you correctly, you want to add more can lights somewhere else in the room. Then connect it to the existing light. You can if you don't have to many lights on one circuit. If you want to put a new light where the existing light is then you would have to remove the existing recessed light with its junction box. If you are wanting to upgrade your existing can light the have retro kits for them so you don't have to demo the entire can light. If you are wanting to change the size of the recessed light for example, going from a 6" to a 4" then you need to take out the old light and then install the new light. Then finish with drywall repair. Hope this helps.

Hi there - this is *almost* what I was looking for. My housing does NOT have screws holding it in - for the life of me I can't see where it's attached, so I can remove it. It's over a front porch, where there's no access from above. Do you have another video of how to remove a housing that does NOT have screws holding it in? Thanks!
@Doityourselfwithjoe
@Doityourselfwithjoe 2 года назад
If it doesn't have screws holding it in , i believe that it may be a remodel type fixture and is possibly held in by clips or springs. If you google remodel can lights and click on images you will see how the can lights are attached with clips. If you want to send an email with a picture to doityourselfwithjoe@gmail.com maybe i can help that way. If you are going to send a picture, take the picture of the inside of your can light where the screws would be. I might be able to tell what kind of clips you have.

My question . With these new led pot lights. If I capped my existing ( old light junction box ) and fed my new led junction box to old one , would it be considered accessible if it’s on top of the led light fixture hole . You’d probably need long driver bits and needle nose to work on it ( if ever need be) middle floor 2story house

That can be a gray area. If you can reach it to install the new light fixture than I would say it is accessible.

@Doityourselfwithjoe

You can leave the brackets and just take out the housing. The electrical box will most likely have to stay. You will need to wire your new lights to a power source.

so i have a bunch of these older can lights and am thinking of installing the new led thin wafer lights. can this be done without going up into attic or kind of do what your doing? if i just remove the middle metal part of the old light (like you did by removing the 3 screws) disconnect the old wires then perhaps put the new junction box close to the old junction box , then connect the new lights? or perhaps just use the old box somehow? thank you
@Doityourselfwithjoe

some of the led retrofit lights come with the wired end set up to screw into where the light bulb screws into so you dont have to remove anything. Other wise what you are explaining. However you shouldnt have to add another junction box. The one from the recessed light can still act as a junction box. I left a link to my other video where i converted to an LED light. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-t3ncWiqu5Yg.html Hope this helps!

@@Doityourselfwithjoe yes I seen those led lights that screw into the old can but they aren't as nice as the really flat thin ones. I'm talking about the ones that are really thin (wish they made those that screwed into old cans) and these thin ones come with their own junction box, so didn't know if you can just toss the new JB and just tie into the old box . This is very clear for models with screws in the inner housing, but mine doesn't have ANY screws or tabs to unhook. How would I remove the inner housing for this sort of model? I have the H99ICT construction model of recessing lighting and no access via attic as its on the ground floor.
@Doityourselfwithjoe
@Doityourselfwithjoe 2 года назад
Im not exactly sure how this is held in place however i did find something in the directions so i copy and pasted it here. Double wall aluminum construction helps dissipate heat. The inner housing is secured in the plaster frame with SPRIING BARBS. This tells me that you can pry it out with a screw driver or small pry bar. I hope this helps. Please comment here when you do figure it out so others will benefit from the solution to your problem. Thanks!

@Doityourselfwithjoe

Yes and no. Your not supposed to bury electric in the wall. If the wire is pulled or at least disconnected from any power then its okay. However if there are hot wires running to them then i wouldnt cover them i would remove them or at the very least make sure they can't be hooked up accidentally. I guess what I'm saying is if you pull the wires from the fixture it's not a problem.
