Studio Pro LED Light Pad | Tracing Light for Stained Glass Patterns and Crafts a.co/d/11Pb5SG
This is the first video on how to accurately score and break your glass pieces to ensure a proper fit for your leaded stained glass panel. Spend minimal time at the grinder. Making a leaded stained glass panel especially for the home requires precise steps to ensure the panel will fit into whatever space it will be installed. In this video I briefly describe how I made my printed pattern. I first drew my pattern on Procreate on my iPad. Then transferred that drawing to Adobe Photoshop. I adjusted my drawing so that all of my pattern lines would be 1/16" wide to account for the lead. You can refer to my first video about Cricut patterns to watch and learn that process. After I made my pattern I printed it using Rapid Resizer. Cut off the edges and taped it all together. After this I started by laying out a translucent piece of glass on my pattern and started outlining the pattern piece with a Sharpie. I then scored on inside of my Sharpie line and broke off all the excess glass. To ensure a proper fit I checked it on my pattern to see if I could see all the black outline and if I needed to make any additional adjustments on the grinder. I repeated this same process for opal/opalescent glass. I used my light table to help me see through the glass. The final method I used is for glass that has no visibility or is completely opaque. In this method I used a piece of card stock and traced from my light table and pattern and cut out a pattern piece to trace onto the glass. Then scored and broke it. There is a time and place to use the Cricut vinyl method for stained glass and this was not the time. There is about 70 pieces in this panel and it would take much longer to stick every single piece of vinyl on the glass rather than sticking to this traditional method that is also very accurate and a time saver. The Cricut method is great for very intricate and detailed works that will have a lot more time spent at the grinder or saw. You must take in account the amount of time you spend at the grinder when trying to make stained glass for profit. If you don't practice accurately scoring and breaking your glass pieces you will be spending too much time at the grinder. Making your work more expensive than it needs to be. Excellence is what makes a piece of artwork valuable. When you create with excellence and show your talent and skill as an artist then you become more valuable to your customer. Hence be able to charge your worth as an artist and not a hobbyist. This part of the process is so crucial. This needs to be the part that you really get it right. It will stop you from taking any backwards steps when you start building your panel. Leading goes fast, for the most part. But having your glass right is so crucial to keeping your panel from growing when you start building it. Especially when it needs to be particular measurements. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to comment below and I will answer you. You can also find me on Instagram @k_c_glassworks and I can also help you there. I haven't been doing glass long but I am very passionate about it and I really want to get it right for me and my customers. Thanks so much! See ya in the next one. -Carlye

i appreciate that you talk extensively about the fit and space between panels. nobody else in videos ive watched has really tackled that but i do see people who make that mistake. have you considered the usefulness of a magnifier light so you don't have to bend in so much while scoring? i can imagine that could lead to some back and neck strain.

What an awesome idea!!! I hope it turned out beautiful! For my niece, I carved a keltic cross panel for her wedding. It was my first large carving and involved some blood, sweat and tears😉. Things like these will be family heirlooms that will last well after we are gone.

@@averijohnson2635 Looks very nice! I’ve done some carved wood stylized family monograms for friends and am planning a stained glass one with the logo of my son’s high school. We will have to see how it goes.

your tutorial was excellent. Very clear and straight to the point. I love doing stained glass and am always looking at different techniques. Although I have been cutting glass for over 30 years I am always open to learning new ways to master my craft. What is the name of your etsy shop

you're a gem, carlye. clear. detailed. specific. helpful to observe your opposite thumb guiding the cut. I also wish to spend minimum time on the grinder. why use h-came on border instead of u-came? how does h-came benefit you? (I'm creating stained glass panels for a barrister-style bookcase.) many thanks.
@KCGlassworks
@KCGlassworks Год назад
Thanks so much for the kind words! So since no one will see the border up close. I like to use H came. I can get H came is much wider sizes in zinc and I wanted lots of strength since it was going in someone’s transom window. If this piece was going to be up close and personal like a sun-catcher I would have either used U came or added a wood frame for a more finished look. Thanks for asking!

that helped me...so um how hard do you push on the glass by scoring ?
@KCGlassworks
@KCGlassworks Год назад
So glad the video helped! You would actually be very surprised rhat you don’t have to push hard at all! Most glass when cut correctly actually wont make much of a sound at all. All that matters is that the scoring tool is actually rolling on the glass. Your glass will break so much cleaner when less pressure is applied.
