I love your extended metaphor of 'the examiner' as a villian to be understood, then defeated 😂 Maybe a good idea for the narrative question? Or would that annoy the enemy? I mean, 'examiner'!

hi, I've watrched a few of yours and others' videos on this question and I'm aware that your multiple videos are from various years but, just to clarify, for the 2019 AQA exam, should we speak about sentence forms or not? Even though it states could in the question, some teachers say they practically mean must

Hello. Thanks for your help. I can write in rhyme, very quickly off the top of my head. I also incorporate similes and metaphors etc so I'm not compromising on language. Should I do this for the narrative account at the end of paper 1?

Hi Sir, I always understood the 'could' as a 'must' as you suggest in these videos, however, I was looking at the examiner report (from November 2017) and it stated 'the use of the word ‘could’ needs to be emphasised: there is no requirement to cover all of these aspects and students who narrowed their choice and then explored the effects of their selected examples in depth frequently were more successful,'. Would you just mind letting me know your opinions on this?(especially considering how the opinions held in the reports seem to change, as you've discussed with sentence forms) Thank you.
@MrSallesTeachesEnglish
@MrSallesTeachesEnglish 6 лет назад
Yes, I see your point. I think this is the way examiners express themselves. That section writes about the need to analyse language and the effect on the reader. The only bullet point that doesn't do this is sentence forms. In other words, the 'could' doesn't refer to the other bullet points, but only sentence forms. So, it is basically saying the same thing as the June 2017 report, just not as clearly. The problem is they realise 'sentence forms' makes students write poor comments. But they will look stupid if they change the exam so soon as last November. I wouldn't be surprised if they got rid of 'sentence forms' in this question in the next couple of years.

Just examining similes metaphors and adjectives won’t mark you down and depending on your analysis you could get a 9 by using just these language techniques.

I find sentence forms a good thing to mention, as it's a more subtle technique and therefore automatically more perceptive. But I agree that unless it can be done right, it could screw up the answer!

Mr Salles what's contrast? Because I have seen it in all your videos but you haven't explained it. I got an exam tomorrow. Hopefully, i'll know what contrast means by then.
@MrSallesTeachesEnglish
@MrSallesTeachesEnglish 7 лет назад
It is a way of putting near opposites together - old v young, male v female, hope v despair, slow v fast - pretty much anything can be contrasted in this way. Writers use it to create tension, or highlight something as positive or negative.

If you quoted and showed this was contrast your teacher is wrong. If you didn't quote, she is right. Ask her to show you in the mark scheme where contrast is not a language feature and see what she finds.

@MrSallesTeachesEnglish

If you are getting grade 3 or 4, perhaps 5, you can easily improve with Mr Bruff. If you are hard working and want grades 7, 8 or 9 you should move on to my channel too. Your best bet is to try my advice for question 5, then do another question 5 with Mr Bruff's advice, and then another with your teacher's advice. At the end of that, you'll know who to trust. If you don't fancy doing 3 question 5s, do some literature questions. Good luck. Let me know how it turns out.

Q2/P1 I have written my answer over a novel called THE HOUND OF THE BASKETBALLS Can you please give me your views over this answer its not fully completed ...And please tell me what grade can this be, also how many marks? Thank U for everything :) The prime techniques Mr Sherlock Holmes and Mr Watson use its contrast. It serves to create a tension description of the investigation. However the complexity is added to by the contrast between the mystery and the negative . So , the investigation of the run chase beings "He had started running swiftly", which are juxtaposed with more terrifying images: the night's weather was filled with tension and threatening, personified " distracted". The investigation behind a chase was filled with "gloom, blundering", as all of the lords that where commending us to full over a hungry beast. This means that Mr Sherlock was fighting over this horrible time."Forcing way through", which suggested by personification of being "dreadful". However, this is contrasted to Mr Weston, who sees the investigation chase that Sherlock Holmes as a guide to just follow and trust him, "come, Weston, come!" The tension builds when Sherlock gives directions to Mr Watson which is contrasted to both different description.
