How to achieve a crisp, dense laser print transfer using a gel plate.
.
While it’s just a small slice of the gel plate process, nailing this step can be the trickiest. Check out this real-time video - things move fast! I often get questions about this part, and if this video proves helpful, stay tuned for more insights into different aspects of my gel plate technique!
.
I’ve found the perfect blend for laser print transfers! I combine Golden’s Fluid Acrylic Carbon Black, Amsterdam Acrylic Oxide Black, and Liquitex Heavy Body Acrylic Payne’s Gray in equal parts for an ideal mix. If I had to pick just one, Golden’s Fluid paint stands out as the go-to choice.
.
Creating an even paint layer on the gel plate while keeping it sufficiently wet is the tricky part. Speed is essential, and gauging the paint’s wetness is crucial. Watching the paint roll onto the scrap paper gives a hint-it’s a tiny tell you shouldn’t miss.
.
Timing is key! Always have your laser print ready. Once it’s on the plate, no repositioning allowed. Precision matters!
.
I’ll admit, centering the print quickly can be a challenge. Once it’s down, it stays put for the countdown. There’s no room for do-overs.
.
After placing the print, I gently rub its backside, ensuring full contact with the plate. Think of it like applying lotion-gentle yet thorough. This step ensures no air bubbles disrupt the image’s contact with the paint and plate.
.
Then comes the crucial moment-I count slowly from 1 to 12 in my head before lifting the laser print off the plate. If all goes well, only the image remains on the plate, like magic!
.
Voila! Magic in action! Let the paint dry naturally on the gel plate or speed up the process with a cool setting on a hairdryer.
.
I hope you found this helpful or have a better understanding of this part of the gel plate laser print transfer.
.
Thank you and have a great day!

Stick with it! Try different paints. But getting the right print out is definitely a huge part of it. I hope to cover that soon. 👍😊

I can, but it’s a work printer. It’s very similar to ones you find at a print shop like Staples. My suggestion is getting a color laser printer and print full color of your black and white images. More toner gets you the best results.

I haven't tried but have seen double printed images on ink jet work. However I think the paper one uses is so important to successful transfer and pull.

For your laser prints, are you double printing your image in the printer? Also what printer/copier do you recommend?

I'm creating a rich black color by mixing all the colors and printing it out as a color print to build up the toner. I use a larger laser printer at my job, so I apologize I don't have any recommendations.

@@junkykid_art Do you mean mixing the colours digitally to create black, like in photoshop. If so I guess you are creating using CMYK mode and just maxing each colour channel out?

@@MrThetom84 Yes, I'm mixing the colors digitally in Photoshop and actually keeping the mode in RGB. R0 G0 B0 or C75 M68 Y67 K90. Printing directly out of Photoshop.
