Hi, coach Russ here with ChessNYC, and today I'm going to be talking to you about the four move checkmate, also known as the scholar's mate. So the scholar's mate is a opening, also known as a form of checkmate that is going to focus on your attack on black's weak F7 square. So here it goes.
White opens with E4 allowing for the development of both their queen and their bishop. Black's most popular response to E4 is playing E5. Now after the E4-E5 opening white can go in either development with the bishop or with the queen, but remember we're focusing our attack on the weak F7 square.
So in this particular opening I will open up with the bishop to C4. As you can notice, the bishop is directly looking at the weak F7 square putting pressure on that pawn. Black develops the knight, and now is when we activate the queen. As you can see, the bishop is already looking at the F7 square, and now we're going to move the queen to one of two positions that can also look at or attack the F7 square.
The queen can be activated to H5, and as you see the queen is now threatening the F7 square, or we can also activate the queen to F3. In both of these positions the queen and the bishop are both looking at F7. Now if black is not careful and black makes a normal developing move or controlling the center, white can simply play queen takes pawn. And as simple as that the game is over.
So let's look at it once again. The four move checkmate is known as the scholar's mate, and it's the idea of attacking the weak F7 square. This square is considered the weak F7 square because this pawn or F7 is only protected by the opponent's king.
In order to successfully attack the F7 square, we are going activate both our queen and our bishop. We're going to play E4 opening up the queen and the bishop. Black responds to center, and now we can activate our queen. As you can see, we have our queen threatening the weak F7. Black continues with development, and now we need our second piece to attack F7.
Currently, we have the queen threatening F7, and now we are going to activate our bishop which is also looking at the weak F7 square. After black continues with their development, once again the queen takes pawn, checkmate. So everybody that looking to win a chess game very quickly and to beat their mom or dad or friend and be one of the top chess players in their school, the scholar's mate is the way to go.

One of my classmates once challenged me to a chess match when he heard that i used to play chess a lot, claiming i can't really be that good at it and that he can easily beat me. So i play this against him and he loses. He then asks for a rematch saying that one didn't count. I then proceed to make the exact same moves, beating him for a second time and to this day i still don't know how he didn't see it coming

cinansnickem it means he is a beginner. This is hope chess. Against good players, White will achieve nothing from it. For a novice instead of doing this, f study the general opening principles and solve chess tactics problems. Your game will improve.

that's like saying someone with a lower IQ than someone else is the one that is not as smart, someone could know how to do a bunch of random things while another knows how to make a cure for cancer while the one knowing how to cure cancer has a lower IQ.
@myspacebarbrokenevermindif9892
Proplays false. IQ is a quantifiable measurement of how people can learn, adapt, problem solve and handle abstract idea's. That's what it means to be high IQ, these traits are present in many people who we deem as smart. Scientists, engineers, successful businessmen etc etc. people don't like accepting that IQ is a real thing, because they also have to accept the fact that IQ is mostly genetic and hereditary and with that, they have to accept that some people are born "inferior" to others in a sense. A disturbing reality no doubt, but it's one that we live in, some of us are born and blessed with such amazing privileges, while others are born less ready for the world than others. It's quite disappointing and sort of cruel to realise at first, i had a hard time admitting that there are people out there who will ALWAYS be more intelligent than i am, no matter what i do, no matter how much i fight back, i'll never reach their level. But i admitted it, just like a short man must admit that he is at a disadvantage at attracting women and doing well in sports compared to tall men, i admitted that my less than genius IQ will not gift me the ability to create something that will change the world forever.

1:00 it's actually best to bring out your queen to h5 first because if you play Bc4, black can just play Nf6, and you won't be able to get checkmate. Here are some Qh5 variations 1: e4, e5 2: Qh5, g6, 3: Qxe5+ winning the rook Nf6 is also met by Qxe5+ However before Qxf7# if black plays Nh6, play d3 and take the knight with your c1 bishop next move.

@timlim1079
@timlim1079 8 лет назад
Yes, you just need to reverse the idea of the weak f7 pawn to being the weak f2 pawn for white instead. The Scholars' mate is not advisable as there are already a sequence of moves that reverses the advantage on the scholars' mate, resulting in either white losing the queen or being checkmated. Also, some people decide not to play e5 and play moves like c6, c5, d4 or even e6

Kind of. Chess boards are set up asymmetrically by having the queen on either side start on the same space as their color, so kings & queens are always in the same column. It'd probably take more than four moves to set up, but it should be possible.

Umm... Why the hell wouldn't black move G6 to block the queen? The idea of moving the knight at all, instead of chasing the queen or bishop is absurd in most situations. This is an unbelievably unlikely occurrence, that requires an unimaginably stupid opponent.
@TheAnimePlaceX
@TheAnimePlaceX 9 лет назад
Yeah, but you don't need/shouldn't use advanced tactics against new and learning players. If you can beat them with a random opening, just by playing the board, you don't need something golden early on. And there's no point in learning a great technique that only works on newer players or people who aren't smart enough to see it.
@TheAnimePlaceX
@TheAnimePlaceX 9 лет назад
... What big words did I use? =_=;; I used extremely simple vocabulary, just because I spoke casually. Just like I'm doing now. And, like I *said* you shouldn't need to learn maneuvers that only work on people not skilled enough to see it. There's no point in demoralizing a new player with an instant death, and it can't be used on anyone of notable skill.
@TheAnimePlaceX
@TheAnimePlaceX 9 лет назад
"Smart" implies that it's advanced. Which it isn't. And I don't consider those words to be "bigger" than average. Except even amateurs won't fall for this. A new player's first instinct is to block every piece. Most people would do exactly what I said; block the piece with a pawn. The only people this will work on are those who barely know the game at all, and are thus incapable of thinking that far ahead, or beginner blitz players (an experienced chess player who's not used to 3 second moves, for example). Neither of these matter in competitive, *or* fun games.
@N8DulcimerOld
@N8DulcimerOld 9 лет назад
***** Hopefully you'll eventually respond to what I'm saying, so let me just debunk what you're saying in brevity. Firstly, what black played is a very common opening called the Modern Vienna, and already you've shown you'd rather speak than study. Secondly, let's assume G6 and no knight move. Queen captures center pawn with check, then captures H8 rook. Your line is a good way to avoid Scholars mate *if* you want to forfeit some material.
@TheAnimePlaceX
@TheAnimePlaceX 9 лет назад
But if you know enough to understand these moderately to slightly advanced openings, then you should also be able to see what will put you in check mate just one move later. I'm not talking about countering this with moves he showed; I'm talking about the usefulness of this, from white's perspective, and the *ease* of counter from black's perspective, from even a beginner's standpoint.

I would do this so much and even when they would see it coming It can be still doable if you can work around there defenses. Like one person was watching out for this and put up a defense as if it was safe but towards the end of the game he forgot about it and I sniped the checkmate with this same strat

To people thinking thinking it to be a absolute pro move, tbh this works only to novices, there are several counters to this attack 1) clear up ur king's left side plus threaten opponent bishop, if you move ur pawns to d5,e5 ur leaving ur king headroom plus blocking the bishop 2) if you open like stated in the video, pawn to pawn face to face, then you can bring queen to h4 and stop the queen from eyeing the "weak" g7 square "Anything is possible playing against urself"

if you play enough chess you will eventually encounter an opponent who voluntarily makes these moves. You may encounter many such opponents. He's merely telling you how to handle this sequence when you see it. And you will see it.

I used this move in chess club once. I wasn't a member, I was just there to watch a friend play after school cause we had plans to do stuff afterwards but my Dad and I would play all the time when I was little so I knew how to play. Only my friend knew this. One member did not appreciate me being there, something about a girl in 'his' boys club seemed to trigger him, eventually telling his buddies how I shouldn't be there since I'm not even playing in a not so hard to hear manner. I told him I'd play him if he wanted which he eagerly accepted. He set up the board, even taught me the rules and how the pieces moved. I didn't ask or anything, he just took it upon himself to teach me. Anyway, 4 moves in and you could probably have heard a pin drop in the room with my utterance of the word "checkmate". Most satisfying chess win I've ever had. It's not something I use often since it's not as fun as playing the game and won't work on decent players anyway but it's fun to break out to establish dominance every once in a while.

this is good explanation of how it is supposed to work. i do think it can put the opponent in a position where they can only defend and cant focus on attacking but anyone with a brain isn't gonna be out in checkmate from this. a simple movment of a pawn prevents the whole thing and actually ends up with you in a bad position.

A nice first move for the black would be either knight from g1 to f3 or the classic forward for the e-column-pawn move (that is done here). When you see the opponent's queen making such an ambitious move, just bring your queen-side-knight forward in order to threaten her; I think the opponent will take the message at once.

@Jaspanda_P

I won with a different strategy. Opponent moves pawn f7 to f5 (freeing their king) I move my pawn e2 to e4 (freeing my queen) They play another move which I think was another pawn I use my Queen (d1) to h5 and got the win.
@ChuddleBuggy
@ChuddleBuggy 11 лет назад
This will only work with someone so weakly skilled. Anyone with average or even below average skills will notice how white's bishop and queen are bearing down on that f7 square and will counter with pawn to f6 (or pawn to G7, depending on how white's queen is developed).

@rayedhamayun
@rayedhamayun 6 лет назад
2 years late but obviously people won't always move that way. There is no play that can let your opponent do whatever you want, you have to guess your way through sometimes. Besides, it's not going to work on everyone and it's not like he said it would.
