Here I show you how to acid wash a standard pool cartridge filter. Only do this if absolutely necessary as it will probably shorten your cartridges life span. If there is extreme staining like in this case and high filter pressure than an acid wash is in order.
If your filter cartridges are getting old - five plus years, then you may just want to purchase a new set online. I have a video on replacing your filter cartridges. • Replacing your Cartrid...
Currently you can get 520 sq ft cartridges for about $75 each or $300 total. The smaller sizes are a little cheaper. The downside of pool ownership is investing in product and up keep. Regular filter cleaning is the key to extend the life of your filter cartridges. The ones in my pool are about eight years old and still good as I clean them at least every six months very thoroughly. So regular cleaning will help.
If there is a lot of grease or oil on the cartridges, use a degreaser first to get the oils off to make the acid wash effective. Here are some popular degreasers:
Nava Pool Filter Cleaner & Degreaser
SeaKlear Spa Filter Cleaner & Degreaser
Blue Wave cleaning agent
This particular filter was so new that it didn't need any degreaser. There was also no calcium buildup, just very bad organic staining.
Remember that Muriatic Acid is a very strong and dangerous chemical. Use with extreme caution and always wear safety gear. When you do the acid wash you just want acid and water in the bucket and no other chemicals. The manufacturer recommends no less than a 4 to 1 ratio (Four parts water to one part acid). That is the extreme ratio. I use a 20 to 1 ratio which is more than sufficient. I soaked these for 20 minutes. And that was sufficient. The Acid is a very strong chemical. Do not pour acid directly on the cartridges from the bottle. You will ruin them.

Sounds like the swivel on top is wearing out. At that point when the navigator no longer turns out of corners it is worth considering to replace it. You can replace the a-frame & Turbine and in most cases the navigator will start to move better and work it's way out of corners again but it will not be as good with the top not turning well. I saw your comment on the Poolvernuguen and that is the way to go. Or if that is too expensive the Zodiac G2 is a good cleaner too.

I did this yesterday and I was amazed how well it cleaned up my old cartridges. My PSI was 30 and it went down as low as 8. if you do this I can't stress enough to get the eye protection and gloves. this stuff is no joke and things always happen.

That is a bummer but maybe it is for the best with a tenant like that living there. Lost a few accounts due to pool related problems too. It happens. I always look at it as a good thing as you shed bad accounts you will have more room to get a good account to replace it with. Letting the dogs out ... some people.

Kind of a side-comment of sorts. But I really like that air relief valve! large and requires such little turns to open it. (have a Triton sand filter here)

The spray he puts on black oring towards end of video after loading filters back in. It's silicon lubricant I'm guessing? You usually have to rub the pool grease on every so often. So the spray is apparently faster.

Does the trash can have to be super clean when putting water and acid in it? How much water do we put in first before putting in acid?

I just use a plastic watering can with 1 part acid, 4 parts water and sprinkle it on them. Acid will work very quickly. Repeat if needed. When the fizzing stops, rinse well.

Not sure if it compatible but it maybe if you want to switch it out -part is called: Pentair 98209800 High Flow Manual Relief Valve, they are like $15.00 online. Great air relief valve - it is my favorite. You can call Pentair tech support to see if it would work 1-800-831-7133. The filter in the video is a Clean & Clear Plus but all the new Pentair filters have this valve.

I looked into it, and yeah, I dont think it would fit for the filter here. But I did recently replace our pressure gauge with the one in this video, I like it a lot. However, it would be really nice if they would make them with glass instead of plastic, so it wouldn't fog up over the years.

I asked the dealer this year, after having the pool 26 years, so I really need a pressure gauge. I asked because I never really found the gauge as useful or accurate. He told me no, I could just plug the hole. He even has plugs the for that very reason. It's pretty obvious when there's low flow from the pump. You don't need a gauge for that.

what do I use to up my acid level, I am at the blue fog stage, waiting to install salt system so using bleach, ph ok just and to raise cloren level.

ken jelinek If you want to lower the pH use Muriatic Acid. If you need to raise the pH I like Borax since it raises the pH without affecting the alkalinity. Or you can use Soda Ash.

I believe if your having to acid wash your Cartridges it's time to chuck them, however I live in an area of modestly high calcium, maybe in some areas (like Yuma AZ) where the water hardness is insane, maybe there u might acid wash before throwing them out. my experience has been most people keep their Cartridges way to long. 2 to 4 years and they should be replaced.

I disagree. My current cartridges were really dirty and clogged after cleaning up a pool that went green. After cleaning it out 7-8x, soaking in a TSP solution wasn't doing the trick anymore. I did an acid wash, and they essentially look brand new. Running better than it has over the last 2 years.

My new Pleatco filters works like a charm. However, after my pool started to turn green after a long winter, I decided to use the two part green to blue. As soon as I poured the brown part into my skimmer, it clogged my filter. I tried washing it off but I realized it has turned gooey and sticky. Will acid wash get rid of this stuff?

+Ci Ci vu Maybe try a filter degreaser first. If that fails then acid wash them. Sounds like pretty bad stuff.

Hello, I am having a little problem with one of the pools on my route. It is a purex triton cartridge filter. When I got this account I noticed there was very little to no flow in the return jets, but the pump primes right away. I cleaned and acid washed the filters already and blew out all the lines and was still having issues with high pressure and very little flow. I took the cartridges out of the filter and tested the system and circulation was normal. I do not know how old the filters are, but they appear to be in good condition. Do you have any recommendations before I have the client purchase new filters?

More than likely the cartridges are bad. You really can't tell by looking at them - flow is the best indicator. Back in the day they were made with glass, aluminum and a brass fitting. I think the wave of the future is everything plastic. Cheaper but less durable.

You don't need a lot. Maybe 1 cup. As for soda as 1lb should cover it.

I believe you need a high pressure hose attachment (fine stream) to get into the folds of the filters. Otherwise its only superficial clean.

Higher pressure works better. Unfortunately a lot of my accounts have regulators on the hos spigot allowing for only low pressure. California.

I just cleaned a pool filter with pro team filter magic - like an idiot I didn’t read the instructions or safety precautions- I poured the filter magic on the filter and it got on my fingers and then I sprayed off the filter and my hand with water hose. No gloves eye wear or respirator. Once I read the back of the bottle a couple of seconds later I rinsed of my hands and eyes well and jumped in the shower. I’m freaking out the bottle says corrosive. Harmful or fatal if absorbed through the skin! Do you think I’m fine??! Also what if I didn’t rinse the filter well enough before placing it back in, is the pool water unsafe then?

What do you mean the PH will neutralize the filters. Does that mean make it safe for swimming?

Neutralize the acid in the trash can with soda ash before disposing of it.

I don't think this dangerous step is required. . There are many safer alternatives that give very good results. However this gentleman is very mindful about safety procedures.

You should have released the water pressure by turning the top value on the filter housing. Then the water wouldn’t have spilled all over the side of the house the filter and pumps. Acid washing will break down the filters and reduce the lifetime of the filter.

Is there any benefit of acid washing the filters like this other than making them "look white". I am guessing it would really kill bacteria, but in all honesty, a good rinse and clean till filter is needing replacement would be good enough correct? Seems that a acid wash is a bit much not to mention the need to then rid the trash can of acid/ph?

It helps remove the dirt that is coating the material and allows for increased flow. It works pretty well and you can get an extra year out of the cartridges. Pretty easy to neutralize the acid with a base. But getting new cartridges is also a good option.

A cartridge can last five years?????? I can't keep one longer than a few months before it clogs up & I clean it twice a week. I'm obviously doing something wrong. Bought our house with existing in ground pool but just learning as I go. Definitely want to keep it cause I love to swim & it's hot all year round where I live. Wish I could get it to last that long.

You can save it and pour it back into the pool is it needs acid over the next couple of weeks before neutralizing it. Or you can add soda ash and if the pH is 8.0 or greater dump it into the sewer line. You just never want to dump acid anywhere when it is not neutralized.

@@SPL after is neutralize can i dump it in the grass? I am not sure i want to dump it back in the pool. My filters are dirty bc when they were building the pool dirt got in it and now no matter how many times i vacuum the pool, dirt comes out the return jets. Would dumping the water in the pool be counterproductive bc it will take all that dirt out and then the water in the tank will be dirty?

Here are the steps I took: 1) I put all 4 pool filters in a large trash bag and put it in my back trunk. 2) I put 16 quarters and a very WIDE tooth hair comb in my pocket. 3) Drove to a self service car wash. 4) Lined the filters up in a straight line in the car wash bay. 5) Put 4 quarters in the box and selected engine/tire degreaser. 6) Sprayed the filters with the engine/tire degreaser. 7) While spraying, I periodically ran the WIDE tooth comb up and down the filter to help open spacing between the pleats. 8) I let the filters sit and saturate for a few minutes. 9) Put 4 quarters in the box and selected low power wash (do NOT select HIGH power because the pressure could tear the filters). 10) Sprayed the filters to remove the tire/engine degreaser. 11) While spraying, I periodically ran the WIDE tooth comb up and down the filter to help open spacing between the pleats. 12) Repeated process 2 more times with the quarters and spraying the filter & using the WIDE tooth comb. 13) Put all 4 pool filters in a large trash bag and put them in my back trunk. 14) Went back home :)

The version home depot has Kleen Strip brand " green" and states 90% less fumes. Wonder if it is as strong? Will try to clean my Pleatco cause even after rinse still have to much back pressure. I will then use these older cartridges as my pool opening set. Watched many videos, always informative.

I've been in the swimming pool industry for 25 years, all in maintenance. Most truly a filter needs to be installed according to it application. but for the most part DE filters are the best choice in most pools, they filter out parasites, and some bacteria, no other filter does either, if u want the safest water, go DE.

+wayne maynard D.E. is the best - unfortunately many cities here make it impossible to install them on a new construction. All the cities I work in give out a $10,000 fine for D.E. in the street. But they are the best, especially with Perlite as the filter media.

+wayne maynard Builder's always go for easy. Cartridge filters are easy for them. Even in areas where DE would be better. My Dad lives in Indio and they put a 460 cartridge in - he cleans it every month. With DE he would just be backwashing. With the drought I bet DE filters will even be more restricted in Ca.

Not a good idea to use acid if you want the filters to last longer has been my experience…….I found high pressure nozzle works better and than replace every 2 to 4 years depending where you live and conditions….I see lots of sand in my filters in the desert!

Cartridge filters are garbage compared to DE systems. I had my pool redone and took out my old DE filter in place of a cartridge filter. Huge mistake. I am cleaning these filters every 2 months and its a complete pain in the ass. My DE system would be cleaned once every six months. Very easy to do and superior cleaning capabilities from a DE system.

It really depends on the area of the country you are in. My Dad has a cartridge filter in the high desert and cleans it every month. The builder should have installed a DE filter. Here in the Pasadena area dirt is not the issue so Cartridge filters work fine. Plus I only install 420 sq ft or larger units. Anything smaller and you will need to clean them 4 or more times a year. Plus in my area any DE in the street will get you a $10,000 ticket. No joking.

My old DE filter was superior in every way to my cartridge filter. This cartridge filter is like dealing with a fishtank.

You be doing too much, hit them babies with a pressure washer and you’re done for a month or so. People don’t let no one tell you you can’t pressure wash filters. That’s just the manufacturer and pool business owners trying to make money off naïve people telling them to buy all kinds of rooty boot acid wash and other products or a new filters.

Dizzy Peron unless you have a lot of oil build up and are not checking your pool chems every week this will work. Owning and taking care of your own pool is a lot of work when you’d rather be doing something else over the summer. Plus, you can’t just jump into a pool right away after certain chemicals are used. Unfortunately, you don’t usually think about the pool until you’re ready to jump in. ): Many times we were cleaning the filter WHILE the family was enjoying it. Wish I could afford a comp to come out every week. But, you are correct, they make a commission on products they sell you as well. My son worked for a pool company. Bummer. Makes me want to open an honest pool company in my area.

I had two clients that pressure washed their cartridges, prior to starting service with me. They completely destroyed their cartridges. The cartridges were only a few months old. When they pressure washed, the bands broke off completely and some of the pleats ended up damaged. You're right a lot of companies only say things to get more money. But in some cases, some people should stay away from he pressure washer. Too much pressure can destroy the cartridges. A simple pressure nozzle hose attachment will work as well. Enough pressure without going overboard. I'm glad you're able to use a pressure washer without damaging anything.
