How do you get that screen from the one saying “phone unavailable “.

sorry for dumb question but is it possible to use my old iPhone to get on internet so I can download audible books onto it? I keep getting a message no service but I thought I would be able to use it via my home internet service ... I want to use it as an iPod but don't know how to get the info without an internet account on that device. Is it possible?
