Beginners, it’s okay to restart or frog back a few rows when you see something you don’t like. I used to just power through and then I would finish a project just to stare back at the way that I did a decrease wrong. If it bothers you now, it will probably bother you later

I learned how to crochet about a month ago. My first project was gonna be a patchwork cardigan aka Harry Styles cardigan. After doing about 20 squares I decided to put it down and work on something that was quick. I just finished crocheting a bucket hat which took me 1 day to complete. Crocheting is becoming my new found love because I can make cute clothes I actually like which makes my wardrobe sustainable.

Not to be a bummer, but ever since I started crocheting and learned that it can't be done by machine, I think about those people who are getting paid 10 cents an hour to crochet the little doo-dads and fast fashion accents. I don't know what to do about it, I just want to give those people some sympathy and respect.

if you make a mistake , it's better to frog it! I can't tell you how many times I have left in mistakes because I was too lazy to frog it or didn't think it would be noticeable and I regretted it. Also don't compare how long it takes you to do something compared to another crochet-er. A tutorial may say "takes one hour" and it takes you three. You are totally fine just make sure you are taking your time to make it look how you want it to!

I personally started learning by crocheting amigurumi (little cute animal plushies) and I think that was a great way to start out. The projects are usually pretty small which takes up less yarn and makes it more affordable and you learn basically most of the stiches you're gonna need from just one project. The first thing I made was little penguin and I was able to make about three from just one ball of yarn.

Great video 😊 pro tip: practice your tension with swatches and/or squares of the stitches your learning 😊 also when reading the yarn label the hook size maybe to small or to big for your tension so I'd recommend getting a set of hooks so you can play with different sizes based on your unique tension 😁
@madyowns
@madyowns 2 года назад
when I first started, making granny squares was a great way to work on tension and getting used to holding the hook! because you aren't working into actual stitches, it made it a little less complicated for me because I literally just could not see what was the top of the stitch for sooo long 🙃

I started crocheting a few months ago and my first project was a granny square bag, honestly a bag is a really good first project, or just anything with a granny square, they’re so easy and you can pop them out pretty quickly. Weaving the ends in takes longer than the actual crocheting lol, but it’s still an amazing project to start with!! RU-vid and pinterest are a really good way to find patterns also! I find almost all of my patterns from pinterest, and if you’re a visual learner, there’s SO many amazing tutorials on RU-vid for so many different things.

my first project (was not long ago like a few weeks) was past the elbow finger less gloves. I did not use a pattern or a video tutorial. All i did was look up how to start a crochet (chain) how to single crochet and then started and winged it. when it came to something i didnt know how to do (like linking the chain into a loop.) i just looked up how to do that specific thing and did my best. They honestly turned out way better then they had a right to be with how i went about it. This has kinda how i been tackling every project i been working on till my current one. Im making a cloak which i am using a tutorial to make. Granted i feel like ive gotten pretty far with my paternless winging it so far and i think it set up a good foundation to work off of now that im working on a true project. Still havent tackled granny squares or anything that isnt a straight back and forth rows or spiraling.

I'm still continuing my mission knitting and crocheting as much of my wardrobe as I can. I want all (or most) of my sweaters and tops to be handmade. I do have the privilege of having so many of my friends being knit and crochet designers along with myself. I thank you for videos and getting makers excited to create a wardrobe that they love and is unique to them. Also, with Instagram, when designers put out tester calls depending on your comfort and skill level apply for them. Trust me you will get experience and grow your skill set with testing. Just make sure you can adhere to the designers deadlines and expectations listed on the application when you apply.
@orangew3988
@orangew3988 2 года назад
What skills do you think you would get from testing that you wouldn't get from just, making from patterns which are already published? Genuinely interested, as someone who has knit for years and years, but never done a test knit, am I missing out on something? I thought it's not for me because I am SUCH a slow knitter, even though I am, yknow, relatively skilled.
@satira2087
@satira2087 2 года назад
@@orangew3988 Sometimes testing a pattern you come across techniques that you may never come across in a written pattern since it's so many out there. Testing isn't right for everyone but it also connects you with other makers that you have similar interests with and build friendships. I know for me, when I apply for a test, I apply for things that I will learn something new from. Maybe the pattern has techniques that I'm familiar with but the construction is something I've never seen or done before and vice versa. I make from already published patterns the majority of the time. Like I said, testing patterns isn't for everyone but it's worth a shot to try it once. Also, most designers depending on their design gives you a time frame. If you think you can make the deadline, apply. If not, don't apply because they depend on your help (along with a tech editor) to work out all the kinks that they didn't catch. Hope this helps.😊

I learned how to crochet almost 20 years ago from my grandma but I'd never made anything more complicated than a scarf, but now I'm becoming an aunt and I started making baby clothes because they seemed much less daunting than actual adult size clothes. It went great and now I'm crocheting my first sweater for myself. So I guess another great tip if you're intimidated by making your own clothes: Make tiny ones first

I adore crochet more BECAUSE it cannot be mass produced by machines, that's what makes it a real craft in this automated world. Anything crochet is hand made by skilled creators, knit is also a craft but I feel the machines took a lot away from it, I'm happy that will never happen to crochet. Thanks for the video, I'm learning to crochet my own clothes too, want to start with a cardigan :) Later: You did good to start overambitious, it helps you to learn, now you know what not to do so don't reflect badly on it, if you'd started more cautious you'd not have had the experiance now, make mistakes, be faulty it's how you become refined!

My first project I started last year was this huge patchwork sweater. Think Harry styles cardigan in sweater form. Bear in mind this was my first ever time crochet-ing and I used a ton of different wools in different colours from op-shops and stuff (Coz I was too broke to buy first hand yarn) and it was probably not the best idea and it took me forever but it turned out all right in the end and I'm pretty proud of it for a first time crochet-er. (TL Yarn Crafts has an amazing beginner video that goes over all the basic Stacy how to hold your hook/yarn, ect.) After that the first thing I made was a checkered tote bag, it used 18 large squares of hdc so it was the perfect beginner project for me! I got to practice my tension and making nice even squares first then I put it all together and added a strap! I also think coasters are amazing beginner projects to teach someone how to work in the round and it's small so you're not overwhelmed with something large!

I started crochet not too long ago, my first project was a Hope Macaulay inspired cardigan. I did have to redo some parts but am happy I chose that project as it is something I liked and wanted, I am the type to leave in the middle if not interested so a bigger project that I actually loved was much more suitable for me. I'm proud of how it looks and while it isn't perfect I am happy to wear it and is certainly a favorite peace in my closet. It is more a jacket then a cardigan as used quite thick yarn 😂.

My tip for beginners would be to maybe look for some stretching exercises for hands and wrists, since crocheting or knitting for too long can make your joints hurt, which kinda taints the fun. Stretching before and after practicing can help you minimize the pain, specially if you're crocheting really tight while learning!

A beginners tip from a beginner: count the number of stitches from row 1, row 2, and row 4, then row 7... you can also count every single row as you work. If there are fewer stitches in row 10 compared to row 1, you have skipped a stitch and can choose to go back to fix the mistake.

Sometimes there's yarn in Dollar tree and every Walmart Supercenter I've ever been in has had a lot of yarn in the crafting aisle. Most popular yarn brands have their own websites. Red Heart yarns almost all come with a pattern on the label and all those patterns are available for free on the Red Heart website. When I started making Knitted Knockers, I looked up some of the crochet-approved yarns online and found an online yarn store called WEBS. Boye is my favorite needlework tool brand, they sell 'self-taught' kits with a full pattern book and a full set of tools for every pattern in the book. The only thing you have to buy separately is the yarn. I discovered these at Walmart but Boye also has a website. My first pattern book was a Boye 'I taught myself to crochet' kit that came with an array of hooks, some stitch markers, and a couple of plastic yarn needles. My first project was a Granny Square Afghan with a rose as the center of each square, which was taught to me by my grandmother.

If you don't have a stich marker you can use safety pins too! they work great, and usually a few are lying around!

I was super stupid and my first crochet project was gloves, with that one pattern I learned sc, hdc, dc, inc, dec, magic circle and ribbing. It took so many tries and one month but they turned out pretty good.

an easy thing to use as a stitch marker are paper clips or bobby pins. bobby pins are more common to crocheters, but i love using paper clips cause to me it’s more accessible and you can make sure it stays on better

I think that you covered all the things to be aware of as a newbie to the art of crochet. Have you looked at other RU-vidrs like Alt Knot? She is your age, Goth and very easy to follow like you.

i started crocheting like 6 months ago and i made a few tinyyy amigurumi keychains and right after i did a suuuper detailed triangular shawl xD took me weeks couse i used a super fine yarn but damn it turned out so good and with each piece i tackled i learned new stitches and to my surprise none of them felt any difficult to me (to be fair im artsy to begin with and my grandma tried in my childhood to teach me how to crochet i was just not feeling it back then...) but i recommend to learn how to read and "translate" diagram patterns which is for me soooo much easier to crochet than book-thick written patterns

my favorite cotton yarn is the lily brand one. they're affordable and available at both michaels and joanns. its size 4 and comes in tons of pretty colors. they're pretty small but they have supersize rolls/cakes (whatever that style of yarn winding is called)

As someone who went straight into crochet very eagerly I advise an easy project like a frog, nothing serious no accessories yet(a frog that consists of making a ball and two other balls for the eyes)- you can add certain details that I have left out such as white and blacks for the eyes, maybe a mouth. This for me was extremely easy when I was a beginner and you may find even better crochet projects along the way. Making a crochet plump bumble bee is also a good idea for a first project.

I do recommend using cotton blends instead of 100% cotton. preferably with a synthetic fiber or fiber that is stretchy. Cotton is heavy so it stretches easily. Trust me on this because it's really sad to make a shirt you really like but then after a couple months it sags low enough for the girls to flop out. Unless you know you can easily modify the straps or length or whatever of the garment, I don't recommend using 100% cotton for clothes.

Jenna, I love you! with that being said, there is a difference when you explain crochet and knitting. Just remember this if you ever dont know how to explain something look up the origination of the word. Crochet is french for little hook. You can make up the rest with just that!! OK!?! OK! bye! keep being awesome!

My Mimi taught me how to crochet when I was very young (I still am lol im a teen). About 2 years ago I got into it again and have learned SO much more information and gotten back into it. But the main thing im getting to here is that I thought I was doing something wrong but im actually doing crochet clothes making right. 😅 apparently I’m just lazy so it takes me forever.
