The start of the new year is a great time to commit ourselves to something and make a conscious effort to improve our habits and set some goals for ourselves.
Just don't set bad goals.
You know, the ones like "I want to get better at the piano". This isn't going to help you at all because it's so vague and unspecific.
In this video, I walk you through a step-by-step process to setting goals and giving you the best chance possible to make 2022 your biggest year of growth as a musician.

I was a self-taught rock keyboard player for many years. Last year's goal: learn to read music and study jazz. This year: start gigging as a jazz piano player by fall. I'll be 66. There's a Monday jam night where I live, but I've never gone. I'll be there next Monday. Thanks for the tip and everything else! Here's to a great year!

I had already done this. My goals for this year: 1. Play at the company holiday concert in December 2. Learn at least three songs for this, and have them down rock solid, including improv: Christmas Time Is Here, Oh Christmas Tree and (super jazzy) We Wish You a Merry Christmas 3. Expand improv skills over a jazz blues 4. Work on flourishes using chord arpeggios 5. Continue to drill the open voicings I know in all keys, add new ones, grow fluent at switching them around in any given song (already made some progress on this) 6. Drill on the Barry Harris dim6 scale in at least C, F and Eb That ought to keep me busy.

Excellent advise especially breaking things down into small achievable goals. The trouble with focusing on a your big goal is it takes a long time to get there you start thinking you're not making progress and that can lead to not working as hard or even giving up. This is a good time to keep a practice journal so you can track those small goals. So when you feeling your not making progress you can look at your journal and see all the small goals you have achieved and that you are making progress towards the big goal.

Writing down my musical goal(s) for the year sounds like a useful way forward. Thanks for the helpful and evidence-based suggestion. So let me try writing down just one goal for the moment... - Perform (ie sing) 'The Long and Winding Road' with my music course ensemble in week 6 of this year's first trimester (which is in mid march, 2022).

This year I want to break out of my comfort zone when it comes to voicing. Sure, I know how to *find* any voicing for a chord I'm about to play, but I often default to the same ones (the "spicy" ones, if that makes sense). I'm hoping to find a balance between fancy technical playing and simplicity in my music this year, and I know as long as I stick around this channel I'll be achieving it in no time. Here's to a great year for learning and exploring sound my piano pig friends 💕

Practice bits that are difficult, not just the ones I am good at coz its easier. Pay attention to finer details, for example dynamics and pedal, instead of just trying to nail the basic structure of the song and forgetting everything else.

Hi Simon: My purpose would be exactly as you said. Namely: Learn various Standards. You said five. As a first purpose it would be fine (It could be more only if you were able to reach five). I would like to perfectly learn the melody before immersing myself in the harmony. I would like to extract from its chords everything that I am capable of. Guide tones, extensions, chord tones ... Finding the rhythm, or the rhythms, In short, "squeeze" the Standard, although I could choose another less strong word. And in the end to be able to play with the melody and improvise, which would be the last step, although not definitive, because I think that new ideas would arise about the odd arrangement in said Standard. Regarding the fact of "squeezing" I would like to clarify that this would depend on the "force" that is applied. I mean that you, for example, would apply a 10 out of 10, which would be like leaving the Standard dry. On the other hand I ... Well, since 0 is the least I would apply 1 or 2 out of 10. So I would only get a few drops of juice. (I'm always starting). Thanks for your help, Simon. A hug.

Happy 2022! I wanted to ask you if you knew any good music theory books, specifically for jazz/blues piano. I don't want a book of songs to learn, or a book that teaches you to play songs, I want a book that teaches how songs are made, breaks them down, and encourages you to transpose pieces or "Try It Yourself" kind of vibe. It doesn't have to be for piano, or even a specific genre, but it would be best if it was focused more on jazz/blues. Cheers!

1. Play the piano every day for at least 20 minutes. 2. Get comfortable comping on a jazz blues in different keys (starting with C, Bb, Eb). 3. Learn some techniques and scales for improvising on a jazz blues. 4. Memorize and get really familiar with at least 4 jazz standards: Autumn Leaves, Fly Me to the Moon, How High the Moon, There Is No Greater Love). 5. Start playing each of these applying different tempos, styles, keys, voicings... Avoid playing them exactly the same way over and over again once I'm familiar with the melody and the changes. 6. Practice comping and improvising over So What in at least three different keys. 7. By the end of June: decide whether or not I'm ready to get up and play either of the aforementioned tunes at the local Tuesday night jam session. If not: find a new deadline for this decision. 8. By the end of March: if at all possible, commit to taking weekly lessons with a local jazz piano teacher.
