In this video I add the PIR insulation to my DIY garden room project. This is followed by the vapour barrier which is stapled in place to form a waterproof barrier, which will stop moisture condensing on the roof timbers. This is very important to avoid the future risk of potential mould and rot in the timber joists and OSB sheeting.
I discuss how to cut the PIR insulation (Celotex) and discuss how to make the cuts fit tightly between the timber joists and studs, as well as explaining the reasons this is important.
If you are interested in buying insulation for your own project I recommend Building Materials for good prices on insulation you can see more here: thediyfix.com/building-materials
The vapour barrier I am using in this video was purchased from Wickes and the quality was much better than similar products from Screwfix and Toolstation

This is classed as a hybrid roof , this is the way I installed mine . It should be ok as along as there is no air gap between the PIR and OSB ,

Yeah, there is plenty of ventilation as the cladding has a large air gap beind it and there is small gab between the wall and edge of the sofit, so I dont see trapped moisture ever being an issue

I was talking about the roof . As there can be an issue with the dew point of cold outside meeting warm air in the building . Sides won’t be a problem as like you say plenty of air flow through the sides

electrician here. holes drilled as we have to leave distance between the wood for structural stability and incase someone puts a screw in. if we drilled every joist at the top or bottom, the wood becomes structurally weak. Engineers or designers dont scale up sizes in the assumption we are going to weaken every joist. I understand your point its a small summer house but in the case of a house or something holding weight the wood sizes are designed for purpose and the electrician has a regs book to follow unfortunately

Yeah I know there are regs to follow. My biggest complaint with the wires were the ones on the left hand side around 250mm from the noggins. These could have easily been tighter to the noggin, that way I could have notched a small amount out of the end of the PIR, as opposed to cutting a channel out of the back. This just made the insulation harder to fit without breaking it. Either way its not a big issue, Just one of those things you only think about after the work has been done

Hi. Great guidance video. Just a question on the bolts in the lintel. Did you just cut these short before installing vapour barrier and plasterboard? Thanks
@thediyfix
@thediyfix 3 месяца назад
Yeah I cut them back with an angle grinder. If I did it again I would counter sink the nuts as I did still have to notch out the plasterboard

Hi, did you add vapour barrier or breathable membrane to the floor?
@thediyfix
@thediyfix 8 месяцев назад
No Matt. The floor has a DPM between the base and the timber. Also, the flooring is weatherproof and my flooring is rubber, so in my opinion it doesn't need it.

Do you recommend anywhere to get the insulation and vapour barrier from?
@thediyfix
@thediyfix 10 месяцев назад
Hi James, I purchased the insulation, plasterboard and many of the other materials from Building materials thediyfix.com/building-materials. The vapour barrier was from Wickes, I originally bought one from Screwfix but it was smaller than advertised and very poor quality so I returned it

@@thediyfix That's brilliant. I've got my timber from a local builders merchant but was unsure about the rest. So that's really helpful.

Did you leave an air gap in your roof for ventilation 🤔🤔
@thediyfix

Yes, the cladding has an air gap beind it and there is also a small gap between the wall and the soffit. This means there should be plenty of airflow
