I'd rather set ornaments aside until I knew some of my tunes better but the exercises in this have been really helpful in helping me see what I should be doing. My confidence is suddenly restored.🙂

Sigh... 😀finally ornaments explained, not just plonk a slide here or a cut there. This is the music theory I needed, my brain needs the reason why, I’m not gifted enough to just do it, so THANK YOU Stephanie 😃😃😃😃 👏🏼

Thanks, Stephanie. Your tutorial videos are always helpful. I use cuts a lot for repeating notes, and I am just learning to use slides or rolls to go up or down a note.

I really enjoyed watching this, Stephanie, thank you! One of the joys of playing the tin and/or low whistles, for me, has been exactly what you stated near the beginning...there's freedom to embellish tunes, even make up one's own ornaments, as one wishes. Gracenotes on Highland Pipes, by contrast, are highly defined and have a strictly correct way to play them, so it's more regimented, though I should add that if one is a piper, many of the gracenotes learned there can be sort of "ported" over to the whistle. Loved the video and appreciate the tips and the encouragement!

A very good video. Ornaments are the spice in the stew. I think ornaments also add distinction among different players performing the well known tunes. Somewhat like a signature.

Hi Steph - Ornamentation is my middle name as a soloist. I really get carried away with ornamentation especially when playing my diatonic harmonicas with all that phrasing, feeling, vibrato, individual note-bending and all that good stuff. 👌 👍 😉

Thank you! I'm still super newbie so I don't use these yet. Hopefully I'll learn ornaments in the future. I don't like when players overdo it though. The song ends up sounding messy. So I'll be carefull where I use my ornaments.

Been playing the tin whistle for about 1.5 years now. The slides, tabs and cuts basically go without me having to think now, some songs I can't even play without those ornaments, my fingers simply do them automatically. But the advanced ornaments like rolls I still struggle with. Mostly because those ornaments often require a lot of finger transitioning but are not shown on the tabs, but if they are shown of the tabs your mind might think that they are part of the melody so you play them to slowly (if you understand what I mean) so you basically have to know what you are doing without any instruction and that's hard

@CutiepieTinWhistle 3 года назад
I'm the same for the most part, especially for the easier ornaments - can't keep the fingers still :D haha. Rolls can be tricky, but you can find some tutorials out there (OAIM and Whistle Tutor) who break down some tunes and teach the ornament in each phrase. That might be helpful to get you started with inserting rolls :)

I've noticed cuts are usually made by quickly lifting and lowering a finger other than the lowest, because it's not supposed to produce a separate note. Anyway, good tutorial, which immediately makes everything sound more Celtic. I'm suspecting your next video will cover the cran on the low and high D? Or perhaps the spectacular-looking roll on the C sharp?

This was the best one so far. The other videos seem to put too much info into one video. I like how you stuck to a few easy, musical passages, and added ornaments one by one. It's important to keep these topics as musical as possible. I was able to imitate each passage because it was played clearly. Good stuff!

Finally a helpful tuto on ornaments! THANK YOU! A quick question: I have a Clarke Sweetone whistle aaand... Sometimes I still have trouble reaching the higher octave on it and its sound is generally too shrill for my taste. Which whistle would you recommend from the cheaper section which has a mellower sound and doesn't require much air?
@CutiepieTinWhistle

Dixon DX005 - around £40, so more of an investment, but a great whistle! :)

you inspired me to buy a whistler, the ornaments help me in playing a recorder too, i got my whistler yesterday i bit confused because my notes in the high octave get a bit of windy sound, it is less aparent in the other notes but persists, working to play more like you. and a little question if you can answer, you know if the the Moon lady whistler are okay?, dont know if some of my problems are because of the quality of my whistler or if i'm still bad with air control. thanks nevertheless

The composer has confirmed that they actually feature recorders in the show and that the main motif is specifically a bass recorder. Very similar instruments, though, so I often play around with the motif on my low whistle. Don't know about the lively song in this episode, but think the main theme is in Eb.

tons of half holing needed for this transcription to play on whistle instead of recorder, but all the notes are on screen. Just pick a whistle key that has the least half holing required to get the notes. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iEmIEI_Saps.html

Good morning madam let me hope your fine this evening well how can I play scales with the tongue thnx
@CutiepieTinWhistle
@CutiepieTinWhistle Год назад
With tonguing, you simply touch the tip of your tongue to the top of your mouth, and cut off the air flow, just like making the sound 'too too too'. To play scales this way, you just 'too' into the whistle in each note 😊 starting with all holes covered (6 fingers down), and working your way up the whistle, by lifting one finger at a time.
