Finally, we have internet in our barn! No more buffering, signal issues, or trouble looking up info when I need it. This process requires no running Ethernet cables and can be used in any location on your property that has power.
Powerline Ethernet Adapter - amzn.to/3WphoR3
Powerline Adapter with wireless - amzn.to/4djmJ3L
I came across these powerline ethernet adapters many years ago when I used to work in the tech industry. They have always been my go-to when it comes to getting an Ethernet quality signal to a hard to reach place. I prefer these over any other solution including using a wireless repeater.
Once you have the powerline kit the install is simple, just plug them in and attach the cables - that's it! If you are using the wireless kit linked above you now will have wireless coverage for about 100' around the location of the unit. You can also get extra wireless adapters at this point and plug them in any where you need coverage on your property. This comes in vary handy for large homes, pool areas, barns, garages, greenhouses, and other out-buildings.
If you have an old router handy you can go with the cheaper powerline kit that just gives you one ethernet port at your remote location. You can then follow this video - • How to Expand Your Wir... to configure your old router as an access point and plug it in. This will give you the most control and coverage as you are using a full powered router with larger antennas and higher power ratings.

I would like to say thank you for sharing this video. We have a detached garage and I contacted our ISP about getting internet service to our garage. They informed me it would cost $60/mo. and $150 install fee. I bought one of the Netgear powerline adapters and followed your instructions for connecting an old router and it works great! By the way we have multiple panel boxes on our home including one that runs to a standby generator and out to our garage to another panel box. Our garage is about 70ft from our home. Works great with download & upload speeds of 50 Mbps. Thanks again.

Great Video. You just might be my life saver today. For years I have wanted to have internet service out in my Pole Barn that is about 150'-200' away from my house but didn't know of anyway to do it other then run ethernet cable underground out to my barn. That I could of done being I have buried plastic Electrical conduit under ground that carries power from the house to another electrical panel out in my Pole Barn and a separate plastic conduit carrying a landline phone line and cable out there going back to 1991. I left a extra pull string in the conduit so I could pull another line out there but I never got around to doing it. Most recently I purchased one of those Flat Panel Wi-Fi Antenna's and was going to use that to try to bring Wi-Fi from the house out to my Pole Barn but didn't mount anything as of yet when I found your video doing a search of my best outside internet options for my Pole Barn. Your way looks like the easiest and possibly the best way for me to go with so I am going to give it a try and place a order for 2 Power Ethernet Adapters on Amazon. I do have a Question though. You mention that I could use a old Wi-Fi Router out in my barn. Do I need to configure the Router in any special way or can I just plug a Ethernet Cable from the old router to the Power Ethernet Adapter in the barn when I place one out there to have Wi-Fi in the barn? That is the only thing I am not sure of here to do . Thanks ahead of time for any help you can give me here with answering this question.
@SSLFamilyDad

You can use any old router out in the barn but in order for it to work best you will need to configure it as an access point. You could just plug it in like you said and it will probably work but you are basically isolating yourself from the house network that way and having two routers doing some internal thinking that can slow things down a little. I did a video on extending a network with aold router if you search my channel page for it you should find it.

SSLFamilyDad Took your advice and made my Linksys E1200 WiFi Router a access Router yesterday after talking with you here. I just replaced it a month ago with a Linksys EA8300 Max-Stream AC2200 Tri-Band Wi-Fi Router with 4 outside Antenna’s. The E1200 Router with a internal Antenna was at least 5 years old or better and we were noticing buffering while streaming and it wasn’t working very well with our new Ring Doorbell that needed a stronger WiFi. The newer Linksys EA 8300 blew it out of the water. Still the Linksys E1200 wasn’t a bad router and I believe should work fine in my 2500 Sq.Ft. Morten Pole Barn. My main concern is the Internal Antenna in it but there are no walls in the Pole Barn for it to have to pass through. Just ordered a Netgear PowerLINE 1200 Kit to install one in the house in my computer room and the other one to a wall outlet in the barn at least 150’-200’ back from the house. Hopefully it all works out. Should have the Netgear Kit today Friday. Will let you know how it goes hopefully sometime this weekend.

@@jamesdepace2783 I just saw your reply here this early morning. I guess I forgot to come back to this video to say how I have been making out with my set up in my 2500 sq.ft. Pole Barn with my Inernet service. It works very well I even stream TV out to my barn. Although I have cable out to the barn I got tired of having to pay for extra cable boxes I really didn't need and this project help eliminate having to have one out there and paying the rental on a Cable Box that wasn't be used much every month. Years ago you didn't need a cable box until they went digital. As most older folks know you were able to get the basic cable channels by just screwing the cable into your TV. You just needed one for Premium channels. You are better off buying a Roku or Firestick today and streaming it outside. The only other thing I changed was that I purchased a better Router for in my barn. The LInksys E1200 worked ok but the newer TP-Link AC1750 Wireless with 3 Outside the box Antenna's works even better being the Links E1200 isn't equipped with outside antenna's on it. I am happy Family Dad made this video a while back and I found it. It made all the difference in the world to how I get decent internet service out to my Pole Barn. Makes it real easy to bring my iPad out there when working on a car or my i Phone for internet related things having to do for say upgrading software for instance to one of my vehicles or watching a You Tube Video on a repair. Before I could of never done so.

Good solution. Good vid. One comment ... make sure your external access point's electrical circuit is the same one that feeds your base router. If that is not the case, the copper magic cannot work. In which case you will need to consider a wireless extender.

Great video! I went to your link, to Amazon, and read some of the reviews. One person wrote that he could not get his setup to work, because of a sub panel in his out building, that he was trying to connect to. I may have this same problem. I live on a farm, where our electricity comes to a pole, with a shut off on it. I have our house hooked up to this, and machine shed hooked up to it also. All the wires are hooked together, on the pole. My house has it's own breaker panel, and my machine shed has it's own breaker panel. Am I not able to use this setup, or is there something else I can do, without trenching wire? Thanks!!!

I know this comment is older now, but others may see it and have the same question. This will only work if it’s on the same main panel OR a sub panel of the main panel. If you have a separate meter or something it won’t work. I have seen high speeds as high as 300mbps using these type of devices and as low as 5 mbps. I’m sure it all depends on many variables like the age and type of your wiring. I’m sure it’s the same with anything. The newer and the more direct the route, the better the connection will be. I hope this helps someone.

@@nickbotostech Thank you. In my case, I still haven’t gotten around to this project, so your reply does help! The subpanel in my workshop I put in myself off a 60 amp breaker from the main panel, with about 25 feet of new wiring run in a conduit underground. So theoretically it seems like it could work pretty well. Or at least well enough to give me a decent connection, even if not super high speed, which is better than what I have now.

One major issue you're not mentioning in your video is the fact that in North America we typically have 240 volts in our panel. Split into two lines in the panel line one and line two that will be flowing throughout the house. Breakers on each line, giving 120 volts to your plugs. You're destination power link adapter must be on the same line as your first one. They cannot be on line one and one online two, they will not connect.

Hey there I bought a set of powerline adapters and they work great inside the house. However, they do not work in the barn. My barn has a separate 100 amp service panel. I thought maybe this was the issue, but I even tried running a receptacle off of a 3-way exterior light switch that connects through the panel in my home (where my modem is). Any ideas why the signal will not reach my barn? Could it be there is a copper wire length limitation?
@ghostridergale
@ghostridergale 2 года назад
I believe your problem is from exactly what I have read with using power line adapters! In order for the power line adapters to work both have to be plugged into the same circuit. So if your turn off a breaker and the power goes off in your home and garage at the same time. then that's the same circuit. But if the power off in either the house or barn and on in the other area then it's a different circuit and unfortunately won't work! think of it as having a long ethernet cable running to your barn, it works! But if that ethernet cable cut in the middle and ran to another location suddenly you won't have no wifi in your barn then! If that makes any sense? Another way to put it I guess, different breakers are on different circuits and the wires running to each circuit are not connected together. so you have to use a circuit that's on the same breaker to work!

HOWEVER - this requires that all the barns, etc, are on the same power meter. My barns are on a different supply (different electricity meter and account). For me, I have to use a point - to - point wifi bridge. Then I can use an ethernet adaptor and wifi power adaptors. Important limitation.

I have the Netgear PowerLINE 1000 installed in my house and the receiver box works great anywhere in the house but when I move it out to the barn it won’t pickup the internet signal through the wiring. Electrical is run to the barn via a 60 amp double breaker on the main breaker panel in the house, through dual aluminum heavy gage lines (approximately 150 feet) buried underground to a sub panel in the barn. The circuits in the barn are 20 amp on copper 12/2 wiring. The barn wiring is new. Is there a problem because of the aluminum power lines between the house and barn, the long distance or both?

Do they have to be on the same breaker panel? Our barn is on a different panel to the house.

Running ethernet cable out to your outbuildings only works if the distance between buildings is 100m or less.

Great solution! I had it installed and up and running inside of 10 Min.. I had an old router just like you and Boom... I have a great Wireless Network in my outbuilding that was too far to reach with a wireless extender. The netgear was plug and play. Love it!

Good vid and helper did an awesome job too. Question…does the repurposed router work as a repeater of main router signal or does it broadcast its own WiFi signal?

I see this video is 5 years old, however it was very helpful. I am wondering if these would be the same products if the barn is 300 feet away and the barn is fully insulated. I actually use Netgear in my home which is good. We would like to be able to put internet in the pole barn without digging a line if possible. Any advice would be helpful. Thank you Nancee

*Why do you have to put these in all the different rooms? Thats doing too much. Did he mention the DISTANCE as to how far this thing will reAch? Why he didn’t specify the maximum distance capacity? Isn’t a line of sight access point connection far better for getting internet to say - internet to a 2nd house, a barn, a man cave a pool house…. Don’t they get a MUCH GREATER DISTANCE than this extender? Like .. miles?* But THIS option…. Im just under the impression that this product alone (it least w/out the incorporated additional ‘old router’ - I think he has a good suggestion there) but Isn’t this just kind of standard stuff to fix a small range setback in a house type problem? And he said it doesn’t but… I thought it slowed your internet down. It makes sense that as it stretched to reach more distance - the usage by others ok the same between would typically be slowed. It just seems like If you’re looking to get internet to anything more than - idk… 50 feet from your house? That this isn’t made to extend that far. In which case a line of sight Access point internet” …. WOULD for sure be. They can reach up to… miles. And yin can get them like…. $50 $100 it varies but If you type into Google or Amazon & look for what looks like 2 little devices. One of those connects to your router than to right outside installed on your home or on a PVC pipe for example of which your cord would run though it & be attached to the top. (Or however you wanna do it) From there if you have a clear line of sight to the building or house or barn you want to have internet in - you set up the receiving end right outside of just like you did from your house Off your main router - with no cord needed in between just a clear line of sight so that the 2 access points can see each other. This way can reach a much greater distance than this & without the slowing of speed like I’ve heard about this one.*

I have HughesNet internet and would like to extend the internet signal to another house approximately 150-200' away. I purchased 2 Powerline1200+ Extra Outlet and 2 Asus routers. I configured one of the routers to be an access point. Do both routers need to be configured to be access points? I can see the new network at the other house but I get a message that the router "can't detect the IP address". What am I doing wrong?

So disappointed that we couldn't get this to work. Found a used Powerline 1000 with Wireless set locally, did the factory reset, set both up as in video, and get message "Network disabled because internet connection is slow". Works ok in one barn, but does not broadcast signal strong enough to get to the next building 20' away. Tried adding an old ASUS router as an access point in the first barn but it made no difference. Just can't get an internet connection in that other building which is only about 150' from the source of our internet. Sigh! Wifi is still just a pipe dream in rural Wisconsin.
