Enjoyed the Video. Your right about there not being any Videos on taking Gaffs apart. That's the first one I've seen. Really helped me alot. Liked your other Gaff Video as well.
it would be helpful to show how to know which climber is for left and which is for right --- how do you tell --- I watch another video they said the gaff should be leaning a bit forward - I guess if you had it on the wrong side it would be leaking backward ---- also how should you properly buckle the bottom straps -- should they go around the steel or inside-- should the long buckle be going around the back of the foot...? thank you --- I am glad you shared your knowledge of this tool !!!
How To Use Tree Climbing Spikes or Tree Spurs for Climbing Arborist, Tree Men, Tree Women and All ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-THI-zIzxxZc.html
Thank you so much for the videos you have made about using and climbing with spikes! I really appreciate you taking the time to help me learn how to use them properly. Your sspikes look like thay have a straight point on the end and mine have a radius near the tip< They are Gecko steel>
like the old saying, money don't grow on trees, must have never cut one, the money is great, keep up the good work bro. lol.....let's keep bring down those tall trees, and saving homes from storm damage.
+Michael Brown Indeed we will try to get a piece of the pie and some tree never show signs of root rot before it too late most times but thats where we come in. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Thanks! Congrats on the buy. I hope they work out well for you and let me know how it turns out. And, as always, your comments are always upbeat and I appreciate you continuing to watch my vids. Also I have healed up well since my accident. Thanks again for subbing and commenting because that makes me glad to know these vids are helping out. We are always learning...
You are generally ok with the smaller gaff or spike as some prefer to climb trees with pole style climbers. First in order to see how they feel try them out on a tree you plan to cut down that really is the only way to tell and as thick bark you just kick in harder and rotten (yet climbable) trees are just a pain to climb anyway no matter what style you have just kick the mush until you hit something firm before you advance or bypass it completely. Throw rope can help you advance to where the trunk is better suited to climb.
I see people put the long ear of the top pad in the front. You put it in the front and then said you put them on backward.. I see people wearing them both ways and that has left me a little confused.. But i do appreciate your videos. Im a new subscriber.. Not sure what happened to you with your accident but good to know your getting better. God bless and be safe.. Dean
That pad can go on either way, the important part is the angle of the gaffs in relation to the tree. If you look there's usually a slight angle to the gaffs themselves.
Excellent video ! very informative and clearly presented :o) i do have a question: i have climbing spurs that have a shorter spur intended for telephone poles... is it safe to use them for trees or should i get longer spurs... im worried the shorter ones won't safely hold on thick bark or partially rotten wood... ?
Thanks I appreciate your interest in my videos by taking the time to express this with positive words. Look in the comment thread for this video for the anwser to your question. I hope that helps.
Fresh off the website (copied and pasted) and not mine but it appears they might just read this: "These "old school" aluminum climbing pads are a favorite for both our arborist and logging customers. They are much lighter than they look, and their thick foam padding gives plenty of support as it is supported by strong aluminum. The padding is replaceable when the time comes, but you can expect to get a lot of wear out of the original pads. They fit both the standard Buckingham and Klein spurs that we offer, but do not fit Climb Right spurs. Made from durable, one-piece cast aluminum These pads won't wear out (you can replace the foam) Very solid support, and very comfortable even with prolonged use Extremely popular with our logging customers
Yes, Jan.1, 2014 I had a run in with my T540xp to the forearm. It's much better now. Thanks for watching my vids and I apologize for the long delay with my response to your question.
Buckingham measures the bottom of the gaff from the tip to where it meets the shank of the spur. And here is a good thread on TreeBuzz that really gets into it but they measure from a little over an 1" to more but depends on your use and the types of trees you climb. www.treebuzz.com/forum/threads/tree-gaff-vs-pole-gaff.20522/
Improper gaff sharpening, first off. Only the flat side should be filed. That and there typically should be some curve to the last portion of the point, which increases the angle of entry into the tree, reducing the chances of gaffing out. Further, get some replacement pads. Those stock L-pads are basic..and painful. There are far better options.
thanxx, I appreciate all your positive replies and its really big to have good subscribers like yourself who help make RU-vid a great place to be. Thanks!
Jayjay42023 A few ways this can be done but normally you would need to anchor yourself in a neighboring tree if possible before you attempt to climb the hazardous tree (DRT main life line). Of course some split trees its best not to attempt to climb at all. Then you try to employ a bucket/boom truck, Lift, or even a crane in some cases. Always proceed with extreme caution in either case. I have climbed a few smaller trees that split higher up and fortunately for me the drop zone was large and therefore I was able to avoid going any further in the danger zone. However, cutting splitting wood at any height is a challenge to and again requires the climber to be extremely cautious when cutting and trying not to be caught in the "Circle of Death" as they call it. Another reason it pays to anchor yourself in another tree in the case of a need to cut the lanyard and you will still have your lifeline to keep you from a fall. Others use multiple heavy duty straps as the cut each section of the tree that splits and slowly downwardly advance the straps and in an effort to control how far the tree will split as they chunk it down. I hope this answers that question you had and thanks for watching my video and be safe climbing.
No problem I hope this helps. I also posted another comment concerning the other form of tree splitting in directions and climbing in an angled position as opposed to the actual splitting as in cracking way I attempted to explain in the prior comment.
Those actually are replaceable, you just grind out the weld and replace with a new set and either hammer weld them in or weld them as they did again. Cheaper then buying a whole new set and these newer spikes are junk in my opinion lol
u should watch the bashlin video how to file before putting bad information out there do u even know what a gaff guage is watch the video.and before anyone says i know he dosent have bashlin but every company has a proper way of sharpening and this video shows u the wrong way. I am tired of people showing bad information.especially on a how to when u can be held liable and u dont even know it thats how inexperience d u are in this industry.
+Bill Weidenbach Me too Bill whats wrong with these people their all over the place here on RU-vid and Google and man they are everywhere deliberately spreading bad information to mislead the masses...but seriously Bill you don't need any special instructions to put a sharp edge on a metal spike which varies on each style of spikes/gaffs. Honestly most people don't even know about or care to have a gauge and again especially if you are just trying to add an edge a few swipes with a flat file. They just want a sharp edge and its just like the argument over how to file a saw chain or why did you do it this way or that way. At the end of the day personal preference rules the day. I know you probably think me and others are just all wrong and its not our place to show others how we do what we do, that is wrong according you, and no matter how right or wrong, however as for being liable each man must answer for himself. I can't say Joe made me do it or he said it was right or he told me to do it. Each man is perfectly responsible for himself and he in charge of his own actions and has to stand on his own two feet and must weight all the information out and in this particular industry must still get additional training or knowledge. As for myself I state this as often as possible and my subscribers know I don't have all the answers and I don't claim to know it all and yes I say it often that even I am still learning. And I don't won't you to take this the wrong way but I appreciate the feedback but don't try to make it seem like its all bad, almost as if we are all bad and all wrong because it comes off as if you are saying your so much better than us because you know the right way and its because of people like that, that have made my channel such a success because they are so busy saying you are wrong and yet won't make an attempt to show you anything. My old boss wouldn't barely let me use a saw now look at me. He failed to see the potential and didn't even realize what was right in front of his face and I had to learn a lot on my own so can you imagine how much further my inexperienced self would be now if a person would have just took some time to made an attempt to help me along. Unfortunately, most people don't.
