One of the mistakes I used for years was to check the buzz by playing acoustically. Not realising that through the amp you don't hear light buzzes, I like a low action, and a fairly straight fretboard, so this allowed me to get a bit lower. Good vid - thanks.
Same here! I've always been a fan of slap bass, but it never sounded right and I struggled even with simple slap licks. Turns out I set the strings WAAAAYYY to high to eliminate any acoustic buzzing. I set my strings very low now and its a night and day difference.
I got my first real bass a few days ago and this really helped out. A Squier classic vibe 50’s Jazz bass. Whoever did the inspected it set the string height too high and there was pretty much no neck relief. I turned it the wrong way once and heard a crack. Started to panic because the fretboard had a massive crack along 6 of the frets that they decided to pass anyways (not the biggest deal considering how much I paid for it). Couldn’t even tune it to standard before watching this. Thanks for making this video.
@@POll358O9squier classic vibe basses are great, if you take the time to take care of them. They’re not the best out of the factory, they need a good setup
This video is incredibly helpful. I made a few adjustments on a "toy." Once I understood what was going on I successfully lowered the action on my new Vintera 50's Fender P. It might be my wishful thinking, but it sounds significantly better. Thank You.
Thanks Josh. I picked up a Squier Affinity bass to just knock around om my original recordings in my home studio and the wasn't sure howto adjust the bridge. It was big help!
I always set my guitars up in Drop D tuning (D1, A1,D2,G2), since that's what I play tuned in, if I go to standard E,A,D,G I can live with the action height being higher for that tuning. I think if I was going to tune in standard E all the time, that's what I'd set up the guitar for the lowest action possible. If there's fret buzz/rattle unplugged, that bothers me, even if I don't hear it plugged in. I can still hear it when I'm playing the guitar since it's in hands & right in front of me. Since I hear it from the guitar itself, there has to be some of that coming thru the amp speaker(s). The in front of me noise(s) distracts me from hearing the noise(s) out of the amp.
Nice vid tutorial just a quick question i see your strings are really low to the fretboard my E string when I look at it at the 12th fret still looks like it's quite a wide Space I have lowered the saddle and done the intonation all is ok is it the trust rod I need to adjust make it slacker or tighter bearing in mind I have 50-105 flat wounds on my Jazz at the moment many thanks kind regards
Did you capo the first fret and hold down the last fret and look at the space between the 7 and 8 fret? If there is a gap then tighten the truss rod a small bit. The gauge of strings definitely has a lot to do with tension. I use 95-40 which has less tension on the neck. Different strings will call for different truss rod adjustments.
I went to a drum clinic years ago at a place called the oval, nico mc brain had the biggest kit you could imagine he was great at telling jokes, at half time the place was absolutely full of rockers and me being small in comparison Bruce Dickenson felt sorry for me and got me a beer😄😄
That’s not all I was at a yard sale I think you call them in USA we call them car boot (trunk) sales in uk I saw a lovely old woven guitar strap the man said you play guitar? my son is a very famous guitarist I said really ! He said yes his name is Bruce dickenson he said yes he’s also an airline pilot well you could imagine I was stunned speaking to his dad living in Suffolk/ Norfolk in England absolutely true story.
@@TheYjmfan yes we either call them yard sales or garage sales. That is such a cool story? I wanted to ask, how did you find my RU-vid Channel? Do you follow my page on Instagram?
Hi I have a 5 sring Jazz bass guitar and I set the action medium to high because i had them medium to low and I heard some buzz noise, can medium-high action damage the guitar neck? Should I be worried?
