How to adjust the RPMs on your Scag lawn mower 

Adjusting RPMs can be tougher on EFI motors. If it has a mechanical governor you can adjust the screw on the governor. If it has an Electronic governor there is nothing you can do without the Kohler software. This is where an authorized Kohler dealer would be needed. It could be yes. If you didn’t set the throttle cable correctly it won’t pull the butterfly all the way open which will cause it to not run full throttle. Hopefully that makes sense. A dealer visit might be a good idea, hopefully its a simple fix!

It’s 100 percent the problem

Yes, I did fix it. Turns out it was a mix between the throttle cable not being set enough and the hydro pumps having a loose bolt from when the dealer did a hydro fluid swap. After I tighted the bolt on the hydro & re set the throttle cable, everything worked fine. It's been running strong all season.

@@youdontknowmyname6956 sounds like the release valve. The big bolt on back or side. You open that if you ever have to push the mower. It releases the pressure. If you push it without releasing you can cause some serious damage I believe

Tachometers vary a lot depending on model and manufacturer. We highly recommend bringing this or any other questions to an authorized Vanguard dealer. Sorry we cannot be more help on this one!

Every mower is going to bog up hill with the blades on. These are small engines not v8s

@@optimuscrime608 friend has the 52” and his doesn’t do anything. Mine done with the blades off. Figured that out when I dropped it off at dealer.

We recommend staying within the engine manufacturer's recommendation. Especially if the unit is under warranty.

yes, Kawasaki fuel injected motors are set from the factory and cannot be adjusted mechanically. You'll need to bring it to your local dealer for RPM adjustment.

It sounds like your machine may have an issue. Please contact your local dealer for further troubleshooting. Fyi we mention in the video that the true rpm’s for the 37 hp vanguard efi is the number you got off the spark plug times 2! It’s possible your machines rpm’s are set way too high. Your dealer should be your next stop.

@@KPMExceptional might call them tomorrow. I compared it to my dad’s 31 vanguard and it sounds the same at idle at wot. Not like it’s revving that high. But I’ll ask if they can check it out.

@@KPMExceptional okay so I just checked and it’s reading 1900 🧐 It was saying 2300. I think something was stuck, because I was mowing and the whole reason I got to looking was it dropped rpms all of a sudden before I put it on trailer. Oh well. I’ll monitor it.

So what should the rpm’s be set on the vanguard 37hp? I’m several different answers from 3700 to 3400? What is correct

Or you can adjust by following this procedure! Some engines just need special tools. That’s a decision by the engine manufacturer unfortunately!

Ok so we got the final word. Just to be clear, this is the 26HP Kawi FT engine that was used on the promo model Tiger Cat 2 this past year. Spec number is FT730V-AS42R. You can use a tachometer to check the rpms of the engine. You should be able to see if it is running within spec or not. The manual we found on Kawi's website has 3,600 as the proper high idle rpms for just this one specific engine. Remember, other Kawi engines rpm spec may vary. Unfortunately, it cannot be adjusted easily. To adjust RPMs the unit will need to be taken to a dealer. This series of engine is flashed at the factory, and cannot be easily adjusted without special equipment.
