Do you happen to know why would a onan 5.5HGJAD spec K Direct gasoline injection would be making some weird noises as if it had a bad carb. I guess it could be sounded as a small backfire and it turns off when you do a turn. This is weird to me im stumped
I'm starting to think you are genius, clairvoyant, or a Cummins Onan consultant or all of the above! I have a later model of this genset, model 5.5HGJAB -6755K in my 2015 Momentum 350M and guess where the OEM mounts the fuel filter now...underneath the set just before the fuel pump. Still didn't keep the damn pump from going out. Have one on order. Thanks for this and your other Onan vids, you and they rock!
I have a Onan 4000 generator with a hundred eighty hours. I started it one morning and it ran for 3 minutes and shut down with error code 14 displayed. I’ve tried to start it multiple times with no luck. Took the air filter off and it was soaked with gas, pulled the spark plug and it was dry. So I know it’s not getting gas in the engine, I just don’t know why. Any ideas? Thanks, Jim from Ca.
Awsome video. Was just going over my manuals making myself an excel spreadsheet to track my maintenance tasks and read about adjusting valve lash. What I thought is valve lash. After watching several videos I feel confident enough to do the job. But your video sealed the deal. You explained it the best and gave this ‘ol guy the confidence to do the job. Thanks
Hi Kevin, many many thanks for the quality video. Very helpful to see how to adjust valves. Just purchased a toy hauler with 2007 Onan 5500 Gold. I also changed the fuel filter to a frame mounted version with a water separator bowl. You referenced a service manual that you can email. Will you send a copy to me?
Gonna comment again. Mine has been struggling to carry load, and now that I’m done, guess it was noisy also😂. Changed the plugs, and adjusted the valves as described. Now it’s quieter AND will carry both AC units, microwave, water heater, etc. no problem. Thank again!
Robert Hyde I was tipped off by the sound it was making when I pulled off the insulated side cover. I just wonder how many of these generators are running with loose valve clearances
Thank you for the helpful information. My generator is purring like a cat!! I only broke one valve cover screw ;-) apparently they're pretty soft, and they do not tighten to stoppage like most screws, so I kept on turning haha. Regardless, I am picking up a new screw today, and will consider this a huge win! The generator (800 hours) sounds so unison and conformed, like the entire timing has been perfectly adjusted. Pretty easy job thanks to this video. Thanks again Kevin!
Hi Kevin! David in San Diego. My brakes are still going down the road, no hanging up, no leaking... Thank you for posting another useful video, gave me the courage to adjust the valves on my 5.5hgjab @ 650 hours; mybad. Took it up to 95% and it purrrrrrrrs. The rata-tat-tat kinda snuck up on me, froggie in a pot of water. Source everything breather, valve gaskets and plugs at Cummins Cal Pacific, except onan air and oil are on b/o for who knows how long, went with their fleetguard filter, $20 for a $11.63 onan, its about 1cm shorter than the onan. Thanks again!
Thank you for the kind words so glad you got that Onan took care of. and that your brakes are doing well, if you ever have any questions that i can help you with my cell is 606-875-0125 Kevin
Hi there! Thank you so much for this video! I have a question for you. I have a bad gasket and when I opened the valve compartment to change it I noticed that the top valve has a little play but the bottom is totally stiff. Is that normal? Onan 5500/330hrs.
I thought it was normal, since one is exhaust (open), the other intake (closed). So, one has pressure on it, the other doesn't. But I'm not familiar with small engines.
Hello Kevin, Great video. I checked my valves when new, and they were .010. Wondering why factory set then loose from spec. I hope that the specs aren't wrong. Thanks Scott
The ignition system consists of the flywheel magnet and two ignition coil assemblies (magnetos) with integral spark plug cables and boots (Figure 7-3) and two spark plugs. If the engine does not start: 1. Secure the spark plug cables on the spark plugs if they have come off. 2. Remove and examine the Spark Plugs and replace, if necessary. Check and reset the gap to 0.025 inch (0.06 mm). 3. Conduct the Spark Check. 4. Replace faulty ignition coil/cable assemblies and set the air gaps. Spark Plugs The spark plugs must be in good condition and have the proper gap for top engine performance. To prevent cross threading, always thread a spark plug in by hand until it seats and then torque to 10 lbs-ft (13 N-m) if new, or to 18 lbs-ft (24 N-m) if being reused
Thank you. Been told the generator needs to be removed to do this, but looks like that's not the case. If it's just you, I know it might be difficult. But would it be possible for you to record the whole adjustment from start to finish next time you do it? Be it with a tripod or have another person hold your camera?
