This video told me everything EXCEPT "how to adjust your bridge". I love Scott's videos and I know that Chris is very knowledgeable and a great builder, but they never demonstrated the subject.

You screw the screws on bridge that corrects HEIGHT (action) first to correct your action first. The closer strings to fretboard the easier it is to fret and easier to S L A P P but it's also easier for bass to pick up buzzes from uneven frets across the fretboard. The further away strings are from fretboard the clearer sound is but it's also harder to fret and harder to S L A P P. After that you tune your intonation with screw that corrects length (intonation) for your string. Here you want to do what they say - play an open string and then harmonic on 12th fret. They have to be in tune. Tweak the intonation till it lines up (around few cents like 2 or 3).

This is a fellow Scottish Luthier set up in Florida now & builds his own bass guitars from home & made a handy video that walks you through what you need to do so set your bass guitar's intonation with regards to adjusting the saddle screws for height & the screws at the back for moving you bridge sales either forward or back & i stress again he explains why go one way as to the other, being forward or back, changes how your bridge saddles will work perfectly when set up properly... If you've seen something similar since on RU-vid that's fine but do pass it one on similar related upload on RU-vid as a lot of luthier's like to keep how this process is done because they'll lose a lot of regular custom & revenue if we all knew how to do this & the time I checked the price from one store they wanted £100 just to set up your intonation... The problem I've found is that nearly every huge brand name bass builders always set up their bridge to work on the strings they ship their bass guitar's out with which is always more often than not is a set of 45-110 & that gauge is too heavy for me & my various styles... When I first bought my first preowned bass guitar it came with the thickest strings on it & since I was just starting out & self taught I didn't know that bass strings came in different sizes & made of various materials to best suit your sound... It wasn't intil a few years later when I could afford a top end bass that I realised I could pick whatever gauge of strings I wanted but since I got used to the heavy strings I like to use more than one bass (3 to be exact) that i have set up with 1 bass with light gauge/1 bass with medium & 1 bass with heavy gauge strings as all 3 can help you achieve certain sounds that other wise on lighter strings wouldn't be possible as they are too light & you have to control your sound more with the lightest set of strings as they can be prone to cause fret buzz if not set up properly but this is the same with any gauge of strings & if your bass isn't set up correctly you'll get free buzz/dead notes et al but with one of the lightest set of bass strings can cause you more problems & they tale a little bit more time to dial in properly because they are so light & more prone to cause intonation problems because of their lighter gauge... @@shale1337 But then the intonation will be set up between open string and 12th fret. I strike a note on the 12th fret and then the harmonic on the 12th fret and check for parity. That way the intonation will be distributed from the 12th fret.

When I first started playing bass in the mid 60's, the commonly accepted thinking was that bridge or truss rod adjustments were a mystical procedure only to be performed by an enlightened few at midnight during a full moon. (Robes and pointed hats optional). Thank you for such a great presentation as I'm sure many new players who may be suffering bad intonation will lose their fear of correcting it themselves. Well done as always.

I play for pleasure, by myself at home. No formal lessons whatsoever, just by ear, so bridge saddle position is among the things I've been curious about. This video is just all over the place. It's hard to follow cuz this guys circles the mountain too many times and takes unnecessary detours before he ever actually gets to the point. That's all well and good when you're just shooting the shit, but not helpful when you're trying to convey concise, consistent information. By the time he gets around to the point, I'm lost on what that point is.

Hey Scott and Chris ... This was simply the most practical and easy to follow explanation to getting resolution for intonation issues that I've ever been exposed to! My music director noticed me being out of tune when I left my comfort zone and traveled into the higher fret board registers, and it's befuddled me since! I've read up on the intonation problem, looked at bass-specific tutorials and even some of the science of it, but nothing before this lesson gave me the confidence to simply make some adjustments and check via a tuner on the fly. I had near-perfect intonation within 15 minutes!! Thank you guys so much. I wish I had more time to devote myself fully to the SBL Academy to make the pricing worth it. Thank you for the free lesson, and please have a Merry Christmas holiday! ~ Wil D. from Flower Mound, Texas

i love music, and i'm having fun learning music. but i gotta say, some of the people you need to go to if you want to learn the specifics just really love to hear themselves speak. appreciate the effort, i really do. but, all you need to say is. see this > it does that, and this > it does that, etc, etc. it doesn't help anyone to speak in long terms no one who's learning should be expected to know. i just need to know what the effects of either raising or lowering the saddle, as well lengthening or shortening the saddle. and maybe a comment on the truss. everything else is superfluous..

You didn't explain why intonation varies. When you fret a string you move the string out of it's plane and so increase the tension in the string.

Hey, Thanks for making these videos, and I mean no disrespect at all, but I went and got my guitar in had while watching this video, and all I've figured out is that I want to have the length of the bridge for the G out to its full length or within a mm or so. I still have no idea how to adjust the hight for each string or length for the rest. I now know that every time I get new strings I should check the intonation, even with similar strings, but outside of the G string, I still have no clue what so ever as to what I should actually be doing at all. This all seemed like it was going to lead up to him actually doing it on that guitar and showing us, but then it just ended. Also just as a reminder, you mentioned a video covering scale length in this video, but I don't see one. Just in case you are looking for a next topic. I've been trying to figure out what to look for when selecting a bass, but didn't see anything in all the video you have actually stating that. I mean you give reasons for and against 5 string and said about 6 string. You briefly covered J vs P, and see you mention active vs passive, but don't really ever cover scale length, or distance between strings, fret vs fretless, see that one in the video has 4 knobs, guessing two volume and two tone? Just I'm been lugging a bass around with me for 20 years, but haven't really got far in learning it, as originally I was supposed to have a band, and no one else got instruments. Then been travelling since, and never had anyone in my life that was musical, so it's taken a back seat. I'd play around with it every few years, but that's about it. Recently I got Rocksmith, so makes starting out on your own a little more fun, as you get to play along with the band, plus I know some people here that play now, so was looking to get into it, but my bass is only 30inch, and in bad shape, so was looking at getting a new one, but am unsure about sooo many things really. Was really hoping you had a video that would help. Thanks again for all these videos. So much info here. You're an incredible resource for us all.

I have a question. I was wondering if there is any way to silence the screeching noise you get from Roundwound Strings? I mostly use Flatwound Strings because I like the sound and feel better but sometimes I like to do a little Slappin and I have my thunderbird set up with Roundwounds for this reason, but I'm so used to the quiet flatwounds that I sound like a DJ scratching records mixed with a bass player. any tips that you can give that'll help?? Thanks Scott, I love your videos you've taught me so much.

Saddle-height above the fretboard, and the horizontal distance between the saddle and the fret, form a right triangle with the string as the hypotenuse. The string length (hypotenuse) and the slight increase in string tension when the string is pressed to the fret, control the intonation. The idea is that you adjust the bridge so the hypotenuses of the right triangles give you the proper length for the action (height) you desire. Set your saddle height for the action you want, then adjust the length for good intonation across the entire fretboard. Constantly retune your strings when making these adjustments, as the slight increase in string tension (stretching) when the string is pressed down to a fret will affect intonation. Be patient, and good luck!

Over time, due to friction, the string gets worn at the points where it contacts the frets. The decrease in mass at those points will cause the string to lose its intonation..

Question? I have a bolt on neck for a 5 string bass. I had to put a shim in to set my action where I needed it. Now, when I try to adjust my string length... The B string is lengthened all the way and still sharp. Any ideas?
@SeanRussell-KE2CBC
@SeanRussell-KE2CBC 6 лет назад
i had this problem. the saddle is all the way back (toward the bottom of the bass) and it's still sharp. i had a few issues. the intonation screw did not go through the saddle so i needed to trim the screw length. in addition i had to cut the spring back so the saddle would get drawn back far enough to intonate. another option would be to move the bridge assembly back. but this would require new screw holes and having to setup the bass again.

@lynnturman8157
@lynnturman8157 6 лет назад
But the fretless bass can help you compensate? Yes and no. If you're in tune, then you don't need to compensate. But if you're playing a fretless, you don't have frets to tell you if you're even in the ballpark. And especially if you're playing an upright with such a long string.

It's so much easier to figure out where on a rule 4mm is than say, 3/16s, though - since it's just counting consistently spaced little bitty lines on the ruler, instead of graduated scales for 1/4, 1/8, 16, etc. Practice helps a lot, but metric is much more friendly *and precise* than the old imperial scale.
