I looked up taxidermy for repair or recaping and pricing for a couple of deer and pronghorn head mounts, my dad had for years before he passed in 2004. However, this video was suggested but not exactly what I was looking for, but with that said, I was so impressed it brought out that meticulous nature of mine as I've done some tanning a few years ago on some coyotes I'd taken and I'd add came out quite well. I just might take it up taxidermy as a hobby. Aside from my interest in this, my original intention was to ask about having my father's head mounts re-done as they have seen better days...the whitetail buck was taken in 1963 and the antelope was taken in the mid 70s there abouts either way both were done the old way on fiberglass. I would suspect that if I did have them done I'd have to recape them, I'd, of course, have to find a suitable match for both, so the question is price and how would you go about it? Thanks for your video. I absolutely enjoyed it, and it goes without saying you do outstanding work.

Hey thanks for watching! The best thing to do to get them restored is to find a reputable taxidermist in your area and let them take care of getting the new capes and remounting. As for the price of the replacement capes and remounting it will all depend on the price taxidermist charge in your area.

@Clear Creek Taxidermy That's good sound advice and yes a reputable taxidermist is going to be paramount given the assumption that one who has the type of experience that would try to get a close match as this whitetail buck is an old one meaning its hair is more of gray color vs. a younger tan one. The buck was taken on a indian reservation in South Dakota and I really kick myself for not taking a suitable buck a few years back when I had the opportunity....oh, well...I live in Idaho at the moment, and would agree it would be better to just let the taxidermist do the full restoration. It might take a few trips back to SD to hunt a similar size buck down that would closely match, and that proposition is a no guarantee situation. However, I've seen some Idaho taxidermist work here, and they do some beautiful work, especially on mule deer and elk. I guess I'll have to do some looking around. Thanks again for the advice.

Love the videos and they have helped me tremendously. Tried mounting a deer for the second time this year and I ordered the form for the exact measurements I took of the deer but the form was too big when I went to put the hide on. The neck fit but the head of the hide would not slip over the face. What’s the best way to measure and get the right size form?
@ClearCreekTaxidermy
@ClearCreekTaxidermy 2 года назад
Kaleb thanks for watching my videos! Go over to my channel and check out the How to skin a deer for taxidermy video. I go over the measurement process in this video. This should help you out on getting the measurement for your form.

Chances are you didn’t make a mistake in measuring. During the tanning process the hide will shrink up a little. Get it nice and thin and stretch it. Buy or build a cape stretcher, it will change your life! Normally I order my manikins slightly smaller too. Mount em loose!

What size (number)needle, nozzle do you use on your air brush for a deer head? Do you use a single or double action air bush?
