How To: Aircraft Detailing

Man and a Mooney

In this video, the Mooney gets polished and ceramic coated by AlphaJet Aircraft Detailers. While I try to keep my plane hangared and clean, the paint really needed a good polish. The added benefit of ceramic coating will protect the paint for years to come and make it easier to clean in the future. If your plane lives outside, this is a must!
While I take a fairly hands-on approach to aircraft ownership and maintenance, the amount of time required to do a job like this was more than I could dedicate. The Mooney is 23ft long, 8ft high, 35ft wide, top, and bottom… you start to see that this is no small task. I was very happy to hand this off to the experts at AlphaJet.
I hope you learned a little something about paint restoration. If you’re in the Denver Metro area and interested in having your plane detailed, give Philip a call, you’ll be happy you did:

Is it really different aircraft detailing and car detailing? I honestly feel it’s weird and stupid question but I’m really curious about that… And I’m pretty sure it actually is, so if it is, what are the differences? Thank you 🙏

What is your typical max altitude when you fly to Aspen or Steamboat?
@ManandaMooney
@ManandaMooney 2 года назад
It depends on the wind, but usually around 14k. Once you cross the Divide, you could actually fly to either of those destinations at 10k - provided you fly the passes and valleys. Most of the time I fly West at 12,500 ft and back East at 13,500 ft.

How do the rivets hold up to polish? I would be concerned with burning through the paint with the compounds etc. does taping off areas where you don’t want to burn help?
@philipsaharchuk7648
@philipsaharchuk7648 2 года назад
Good questions. The only thing I find the need to tape off is the static ports to make sure the polish doesn’t get inside while going over it. Before polishing an aircraft, you need to use your best judgment of if you will be fixing the paint, or breaking it down by providing a service like this. If you decide that your paint has enough depth to it, and proceed with the polish, using a sensible buffer rpm, the correct pads, compound and polish, also the correct hold time and pressure will insure that you won’t burn any paint off off of the aircraft. Obviously if you blast the buffer on 1500rpm and put insane amounts of pressure on the buffer, you will burn your paint off. But, if you run in at 400rpm and use just enough pressure to keep the pad flat, you won’t have any problems with burning it. Don’t hold it in 1 area as well while it’s running because that can cause the paint to heat up quickly which will also result in burning.

How long does the ceramic coating last for?
@ManandaMooney

I'm hoping a long time (years). It's much easier to keep clean now. Dirt and grime wipes right off now with a rag.

Aircraft paint is polyester urethane its just fine if you don't sand it and only polish like he is doing...
@validatedcustomer604
@validatedcustomer604 Год назад
In all honesty it is the compound or polish that mostly determines how gritty the polishing is , so using the same compound with different polisher or pad really makes no difference. That’s why there’s cutting compound, polish , and fishing polish just like sand paper, because that’s what polishing is basically, sanding of micro layers of either, pollutants , ceramic coating , clear coatings or paint. Hes doing a 3 step polish with only 2 grits of polish.
