You know I am a 21yr garage door vet. I subscribed not for the knowledge, but because you do a great job on your videos. Good info but most importantly promoting safety, well done. One thing I would add, is when you open your door look and make sure both cables are tight.
@parts4garagedoors278
@parts4garagedoors278 2 года назад
Yes- a loose cable when the door is in the opened position is going to eventually cause an issue, or may become tangled. Aside from tightening the drum on one side, sometimes the door itself is askew from the track. This is usually a result of the back hangers being installed slightly out of square from the vertical track.

I tried to redo my cable a couple weeks ago and left the vice grip on when I put the new cable on 🤦 I'll be ordering two new cables to install. My only question is can I put new cables just as shown in this video (garage door down and only winding on first groove)? I've seen other that show garage door in up position stating to wind the whole drum with the cable...

Geez man 2019 and another video of a garage door with torsion springs? My door doesn't have torsion springs. Torsion for mine appears to be done close to each cable pulley by winding the cable. There are no springs in the center on either side. It's just a rod. With all of the video's of torsion spring based systems I already know what the problem is with a door that is mis-aligned without even watching this video. Oh well someone will get use out of this so good job.

Never loosen a drum without a winding bar in at least one of the springs. Also ya put your vise grip on upside down. Where you were standing will hurt someone if they didnt bar off the springs and the other drum slips(because thelast guy may not have tightened it enough)
@parts4garagedoors278
@parts4garagedoors278 3 года назад
The purpose of this method is a quick fix for a DIY'er without a winding bar. I have used this method 100's of times. It is highly unlikely for the drum on the other side to slip all of a sudden. People tend to overtighten these drums. Again, anything is always possible! Some risk is always there.
@daddybear7062

Michael Perry is 100% correct, in Florida for example a 16x7 garage door can weigh nearly 450lbs with wind loading struts. All that load will be trusted to 1drum and 1 pair of questionable Vice grips. Instead put the Vice grips on the cable on the good side, next take a pipe wrench and put it directly on the torsion tube, lift up towards the ceiling no more then a 1/4 turn with 1 hand and move cable back in the grove with your other hand.

@parts4garagedoors278
@parts4garagedoors278 4 года назад
If you unwind the springs first (using 1/2 o.d. winding bars by 18" long), you will be able to unravel the cables, allowing you to reset everything. Align the cables and make them straight, then use a vise grip planted on the torsion tube orientated against the wall (in an upward direction) to hold the cables so you can wind the springs. Watch some videos on spring replacement first- AND BE CAREFUL.

This way would only work if the floor was level and your tracks are level as well. If the right side concrete was lower you've dropped the right side of the door too low when losing the drum....

I adjusted it to 30/4 turns the one on the right side I didn’t touch because it seems like it has tension in it, but now my door doesn’t go up. It goes up about an inch and then it stops. I don’t know if I should maybe unwind the right side Both of the cables that I replaced seem OK

My cable has quite a bit of tension on it when the door is in the down position. I am unable to turn the cable drum, by hand, enough to apply the same tension on the side I'm adjusting compared to the other side. I have tried several methods to apply additional tension, but nothing seems to work perfectly -- the tension is always different and the door seems to be just a little off. I can tell that the tension is different because when the cable is strummed, it vibrates and creates a pitch that i can hear. The pitch on both sides should be the same if the tensions are the same. But one pitch is always a lower tone.

So my spring snapped. When this happened, my cables all fell off. I have two single doors/one motor rather than one two entry garage door, so each door has one spring. I couldn’t find a 225x26”, so I bought a 225x33 so it’s longer but diameter and coil size match. Springs went on as expected, however, now that the garage door/spring is installed and wound, everything I lift the door, the cables on the drum come off all four drums... when the door broke and I first opened it, the bottom support to the left door did bend in and that’s not perfect, Ali thought I’ve tried to reshape to the original contours. Unsure if the cables are different lengths or what is happening but every time this happens, the cables bind and I can’t close the door and have to remove cables to close it again. :( feeling defeated... any DIY suggestions RU-vid?
@parts4garagedoors278
@parts4garagedoors278 3 года назад
Buying a spring that is 7 inches larger is a problem. Your new springs, although longer- provide LESS lift than the original shorter ones. This, combined with underwinding the springs, will cause the cables to come off and get tangled. Your springs should be wound 29 to 30 quarter turns for a 7 ft tall door, and 33 to 34 quarter turns for an 8 ft tall door. My advice would be to buy springs exactly matching what you had. Also, when you measured 225x26, was that the length of the broken or unbroken spring? The correct length is by measuring the broken spring and subtracting the gay where it is broken,. This might actually mean that your original springs were 225x24 (a more common size). Hope this helps. BTW- you can order springs from our website www.parts4garagedoors.com

Shouldn't you explain the guitar string tension to put on the cable before you tighten the set screws?
@parts4garagedoors278
@parts4garagedoors278 3 года назад
Actually there is almost no difference in the length of the cable, when it is straight, as when it is tight like a guitar string. It is only necessary for the cable to be straight. Once the vise grip is removed from the torsion tube it will become super tight under the power of the spring.
@OMMITRA

I should have seen your video first before attempting the adjustment. I did not use the vicegrips as you demonstrated and now the cable on one side is looser than the other. How do you suggest i fix this?
@parts4garagedoors278
@parts4garagedoors278 3 года назад
On the side where the cable is tight- fasten a vise grip on the track above any of the rollers on the same side. Next, lift slowly and carefully on the lowest side of the door (side where cable is loosest) and level the door as needed. Hold level and fasten a vise grip on the track BELOW any of the rollers on that side. You are essentially up righting the door using the vise grips! Then follow the steps in the video to plant vise grip on the torsion tube (below the tube and against the wall) and loosen the set screws on the drum, real up the slack in the cable, then tighten cable drum. Remove all vise grips. DONE. Thanks for the question!
@OMMITRA
@OMMITRA 3 года назад
@@parts4garagedoors278 Done! Thank you, it worked. The cables are taut and the door is level and opening. However, i noticed that the cables on both pulleys become loose after the door has fully opened. This is because the pulleys stop rotating a few seconds before the door fully opens. Is this because the spring is loose and need tightening or is this some other issue? I suspect loose spring because the door is also slightly heavy to lift up when disconnected from the chain. Will appreciate your advice...
@parts4garagedoors278
@parts4garagedoors278 3 года назад
@@OMMITRA Yes, the spring should be tensioned a bit more. Please be careful and research this task very well- it can be very dangerous. We always advise you to call a pro. If you adjust the upward limit on your garage door opener to stop 3 or 4 inches from the top- this may get you by until the adjustment to the spring can be made.

@@parts4garagedoors278 Done! All good now. Thank you very much. I used a slightly different approach. I tightened the spring (one turn) without loosening the screws and held it in place with the winding rod. This process loosened the cables on the wheels. Here are my problems. I hope you can help me. My electric garage door opener had a short. I have been forced to manually open and close the door. This went well for a few months. One day after opening my door (21 ft. in length) it got stuck. A little higher on the right side. I tried for an hour to get it to move with no luck. The cable had come out of its wheel. In desperation I cut the cable on the right side. This did not solve anything. It would not move. I knew the middle part had these tightly wound cables and to stay clear of them. I hid behind some heavy boxes filled with other items (for protection) and used a long handled looper to cut the other cable. BANG it came off and put a hole in the drywall next to the garage door. Better it than me! Now I thought I could open the door. The door is shut like there are 500 pounds of bricks on it. Any SAFE suggestions besides calling a pro. Thanks to the government everything is so expensive I want to try to do as much as I can.

I grabbed the tube just inboard of the sheave to avoid deforming the end outside the bearing, and rolled it back that 1/8 to 1/4-turn I needed to get the wire back in the right groove.

This works, but know that the door could go out of level by doing it this way, especially if it is the left drum. In the scenario here, I would've probably just lifted the vice grip a little to back wind the spring and gain a little slack, and slid the cable back in place with a screwdriver. You could also use one vicegrip as a lever to rotate the shaft, and another to clamp it down like he showed in order to hold the slack while you do your thing. Just keep your fingers clear.

I'm sure you already fixed it, but my suggestion would have been to follow the same process as shown, but back turn the cable drum enough to eliminate tension on the cable and pop the end loose from the slot in the drum. Now that you have the end of the cable unravel it completely from the rod. Next you would feed the end back into the slot in the drum, rotate the drum to tighten the slack. hold cable taught while you tighten set screws on the drum to secure it in place.

You can do that repair without ever loosening the set screws on the drum. You simply go to the bottom roller at the left side of the door and use vise grips to clamp just above the roller, you then go to the right side of the door and lift it until there is enough slack in the cable to correct it on the drum. then place another vise grip under the right side bottom roller so the slack isn't lost. Go up to the drum, re-align cable and then remove both vise grips. This method will ensure the door remains level.

I've adjusted my torsion springs to level the door but I have a half inch gap on both sides. The door has a slight bend in it because the cables seem too tight. I've tried backing off the springs but then they dont provide enough lifting support for the door (when off the track will slam close from 1', or will close on it's own when half open). I'm stumped on what I can do?

Sorry, this one might be difficult to truly understand the issue without seeing it in person. Definitely sounds like the springs are undersized for starters.

Just a little confused on why the locking pliers were used, I would of thought they should be on the other side of the wheel not outside the wheel. what was the point of using the locking pliers? Did it stop something from turning?

@parts4garagedoors278 Год назад
The channel locks hold the tension of the spring. The cable on the other side holds half of the tension.

Thank you for the clear video. I have a question about my garage door, my door is 7 feet 4 inch height, can I use the 8 ft door cable for replacement?
@parts4garagedoors278
@parts4garagedoors278 Год назад
Sorry for the late response. A cut cable would be ideal. Cut 8 inches off the 8 ft cable and crimp on a new end. If the cable is too long it will fill up the drum and possibly come loose and get tangled.

Yeah, by the way, went to your location in East Houston and your place of business doesn't exist anymore. Thanks

The website says- temporarily closed and to call for an appointment. As much of our country, parts are difficult to come by. We have combined both stores for now. The West Houston location has remained open and is fully stocked.

I put on a new cable and now my door won’t shut. Once the door weight starts getting supported by the cables the door locks and won’t go down. The safety cable is un engaged

You have extension springs if there are visible safety cables. That’s a different kind of repair entirely. You might search for help or how to info on extension springs

could someone explain why some videos i’ve watched the people wrap the wire on the spool along side the markings but in this you didn’t. also mine weren’t wrapped around on the spool it’s just twisted on the side

Some people mark the position of the drum to the torsion tube. This allows them to set the door in the exact position as before. The only time this is helpful is when the ground is uneven and it’s necessary to get back to the same position as before.

My problem as pet your video, my cable has slack when the door is in the up position, it is tight when in the down position, should I raise the door and repeat as your instructions on in the up position ?

This usually happens when the rear hangers (the angle iron coming down from the ceiling) are askew. In other words, they are slightly diagonal when compared to the straight vertical track that is on the sides of the door. Moving them over as needed (both in same direction) to the left or right even just one inch can make a big difference. Note- moving the hangers will also move the upper track which is what you are trying to do.

How do yo u fix the door when both cables come off the rollers? I tried to do it, but it looks like the spring has no tension so it didn't work when I tried to lower the door.

This is a more complicated issue. You are pretty much starting at the beginning- as if you were installing springs. You should look up videos for winding garage door springs for more details.

I have the same issue and would like some direction on how to fix this too. The springs on this garage door are not in the center like in the video. There are 2 springs on each side of the frame closes to the ceiling. And it appears the drum just fell apart. I found one side of it laying on a shelf with 5 what appears to be bearings? This is a rental house and tenant never informed me of anything.

what socket were you using on those square headed screws on the drum? Special 4 point one (which Home Depot does not carry) or something else?

When this occurs it’s usually because you don’t have enough turns on the spring. Always wind 29 to 30 quarter turns on a 7 ft tall door and 33-34 quarter turns on an 8 ft tall door

Why would there be loose tension on a cable when the door is up, but proper tension when the door is down?
@parts4garagedoors278
@parts4garagedoors278 2 месяца назад
Sounds like the upper horizontal track are askew. They should come away from the wall at 90 degrees.
