How To Align Your RIDGID Portable Table Saw

One of my viewers, Thomas Martin, had a concern about aligning the blade on the Ridgid Compact table Saw R4516 and R45171. In this video I share with you how to align not only the blade, but the riving knife, miter gauge, and the fence. What I've done is grabbed just the inspection segments from my other video "How To Get The Most Out of Your Ridgid Compact Table Saw" and added in the steps for alignment that Thomas is looking. I've also added a segment that addresses aligning the Rip Fence to the miter slot and blade. So, let's take a look.

Having that screw to fine adjust the blade to be parallel to the miter slot is a amazing feature! I can’t believe more saws don’t have that. My Bosch table saw that costs two to three times as much has to be tapped with a wooden block and when you tighten the locking screws it always moves.

Excellent quality video, great info. I recently got the new Rigid 4514 with soft start, quick stop and a stand (black Friday special), and wasn't sure how to "tune" it. The blade was a few degrees off 90 and 45, now it's only about a degree off, and I can live with that, thank you!

You do have to spend some time setting the saw up... blade, fence, etc. But once done, the saw is great. Fairly compact which is Nice ru-vid.comUgkxXh-4_3-ZT1fFWP91ZV7iVqzElr0lEb-a I did get an Incra Miter Gauge which takes some setup as well. The stock miter gauge can be adjusted in the miter slot with a little painter's tape... this tightens up the side to side play a lot.

Actually, the problem is the miter gauge. it's just awful. everything else was square - the fence, the blade, the slots - but the miter gauge itself is just awful. I think i'm either going to invest in a more expensive miter gauge like an Incra, or build me a crosscut sled, or maybe both.

Thanks so much for this video. It cleared up so many questions the manual just didn't make clear enough. I am still having a problem though. I have a new R45171. I cannot get the blade to 0 or 45 and remain there. I am using a digital angle gauge. The new saw was at 90.1 and 45.1 to the table top. I unlock the bevel gauge and moved the blade to the 0 degree mark, I leave the bevel gauge unlocked. I then turn the left adjustment screw counterclockwise and at some point the digital angle gauge will adjust to 90, but the bevel gauge once moved off 0 will not return to that point. I cannot get it back to 0 without the digital gauge showing the blade off alignment again. The same thing happens with the right adjustment screw at 45 degrees. Am I right to assume that after turning the adjustment screws counterclockwise to loosen the gauge, once aligned I have to tighten the adjustment screw by going back clockwise until the screw is snug. Or do I just leave them when the alignment is set. Any movement of the gauge just throws it off again. Almost six hours of trying and I am still at step one. Thanks for your help. Tony

Sandra Bullard Thank you for the detailed question. If you go to 13:05 in this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MvvLdJQQGRg.html&index=3&list=PLlOO6ucQXejZRcPk27-1d2n4XE2YpuQ28 you will see the nut that is the tension control or the bevel. By changing the tension on this nut you may be able to get you bevel control where you want it. A 0.1 degree difference is certainly not noticeable to the eye and unlikely to impact most projects. In any case let me know how it turns out. Thanks for stopping by.

Sir, thank you so much for the instructional videos on the Ridgid R45171 table saw. I've had mine for about 18 months now and I'm pretty much a weekend woodworker so this saw is perfect for my projects. However, the plastic wheel that controls the blade's height adjustment has stripped out and the blade now is stuck in the up position. In fact, it will not lower or rise. My first questions is how do I replace the height adjustment wheel as I don't see a way to remove the pin. Second, how to I get the motor/blade to rise and lower? Thank you for your time. Stay healthy and strong. Looking forward to more of your videos.

I was looking at how to adjust the blade parallel to the table. I like the way you explain this and did a great job of presenting it. I, however, was not able to get the square to where it just barely touched the blade from both sides. I am thinking i need to remove the blade and make sure there is no dirt and debris between the blade and the inside washer. The blade was one of the cheaper ones that Home Depot and was on sale. It could be the blade I am thinking.

@WorkMateGuy 3 года назад
Hmm... in which direction is the riving knife off... towards the open end of the shaft holding the blade? I am wondering if you might be missing a spacer for the blade???
@SoCalKevin
@SoCalKevin 2 года назад
@@WorkMateGuy sorry my response is about a year late lol! No, the riving knife is off towards the left side of the blade, towards the motor. I added a single layer of electrical tape toy riving knife to push it towards the right but it's still not enough. My riving knife causes lumber to drift away from the fence. My fence also has issues with alignment because the rear shifts slightly to the right when locking down the lever. Maverick Mike Kauai here on RU-vid made a very thorough video about adjusting his table saw, which is the same model I have, and coincidentally we have many of the same problems. He responded toy comments on his vid, and said he ended up taking a grinder to his riving knife to make it thin enough to clear his blade.

@@WorkMateGuy hi, after using the standard adjustment, the rear of the blade was still 3mm closer to the miter slot than the front. @@WhoKnowsWho2 @WorkMateGuy Hi. I had the same problem with aligning the blade to the miter slot; not enough range on adjusting the heel of the blade. I got it VERy close but still a touch off. Then I also noticed I did not have enough range to adjust the fence alignment with the scale at the 13inch mark..it seems my entire blade is too far left. I feel like my entire arbor assembly is too far to the left as the blade is also very close to the left side of the throat guard. If I could adjust the entire arbor assembly a little to the right I think that would fix my alignment problems. How did you get access to the screws that attach the arbor assembly to the table. I think I see the screws, but I can't seem to access them with a screw driver without removing the table top..which seems like a big hassle and I also don't want to void my warranty. Any help would be much appreciated. I'm going to call Ridgid tomorrow.

Hey thanks for your videos, helps a ton with purchasing decisions, maintenance, and adjustments in this videos case. As for the bevel adjustments, I’m having some issues.i am brand new to woodworking which could be the issue. But essentially I can’t seem to get the blade aligned properly at 0 degrees or 45...when were raised all the way up I adjust the front adjustment screw and then adjust the 45 screw following the same process. It’s not that they don’t align, they absolutely do. It’s just that-the screws seem loose when the adjustments are made and even when adjusting the screw on the bevel degree gauge one side (whether it be 0 or 45) will never line up properly with going to the other side. I’ve use a combination square and A framing square following the instructions exactly. Are there any tips for a beginner who is doing this for the first time is there anything you can think of that I’m doing wrong should I start with a different area? I noticed my blade was also not aligned to the later slot. Are there any videos you know of for beginners that can address this? The reason I ask is that because your video is specific to my saw while others are not and I do like the layout of your videos. Anyway let me know and keep up the awesome content thank you
@WorkMateGuy
@WorkMateGuy 5 лет назад
Hi Danial: Bevel Alignment - It sounds like you are doing everything correctly and that your blade/bevel can be adjusted to the work table at precisely 40 and 0 degrees. However, the gauge on the front does not agree exactly with your framing square when raised all the way up. First, I would say that the majority of your cuts will not be with the blade completely raised unless you will be cutting a lot of 4x4 stock. Does the gauge on the front of the saw agree with your framing square when the blade is not completely raised? Second, If you know the blade is aligned correctly to the table for the angle of bevel you want then you can still make your cut(s) accurately. Heel Alignment - This is critical to prevent binding and possible kick back so it must be addressed. In this video at 3:40 I go into detail on how to align the blade to the mightier slot in detail using the "Magic Tooth" method. It almost sounds like you are saying that you have a different make and model saw. If so, down load the PDF version of the User Guide from the manufacturers web site and search the document for the word "heel" to find how to align your saw.

You know, I have had several people comment that their rip fences are slightly off. Having had 3 different RIDGID table saws in my shoppe and looking at the rip fences I am not seeing how they can be out of alignments. Perhaps RIDGID made some changes after I reviewed them. Have you looked at the underside of your fence to see if it is adjustable without modifications?

The big red (and yellow) On-off switch no longer turns off the machine. The tip about pushing the fence before locking is valuable, BUT... Mine is outa still whack. When I eliminate the wobble by pushing before locking, it's consistently 1/8" further at the back from the blade and slots. In other words, the fence itself is not square to its track on the operator end. Can this be adjusted?
@WorkMateGuy
@WorkMateGuy 4 года назад
Hey Charlie - You are the second person that has mentioned this. Looking at my fence I am not sure how this could happen unless the two white stops on the bottom of the fence are loose or mal-formed. If you got yours at a big box store you could take it back for exchange or have a pro there look at the issue with you.
@charliehorse8686
@charliehorse8686 4 года назад
@@WorkMateGuy Actually I fixed it since I posted a week ago. It is adjustable, but not with the white stops under the fence (which is what I first thought as well). Actually I have model R4513, which is similar so your video was helpful, but it's not the same in this regard: It has four socket head screws on top of the near side of the fence which can be loosened, then re-tightened after alignment. I stuck a piece of hardwood in the miter slot, moved the fence against it, then tightened. Even so it took a few tries to get it just right. So now the fence and blade are both aligned to the slots. I assume your model has something similar, although I don't see screws on top. Maybe for yours they're underneath.

Compared to the Dewalt DW745, is the ridgid better? Are they the same? Or is the dewalt better? I like the dewalt because of the way the fence is placed and the design of it, and the options it brings to hold the piece of wood and besides that the way to adjust the angles of the saw I think it is faster. But I also like the ridgid because you can cut pieces of wood a little wider and the setting of the fence also seems to be smooth and fast. Good Review very complete.

The only reason why I bought ridged over desalt was dado. Dewalt does not support dado stack and ridgid does. It was my breaking point. Also ridged rip capacity is wider which is nice working with plywood.

@@rosttomkiv619 I bought the ridgid but it is a newer model than the one in the video and it does have a soft start. I liked that you can cut large boards over 24 inches, although it is a bit difficult to do it alone but it can be done. The other problem is that I have not been able to adjust it to make the most precise cuts, I think it is a problem with the cutting guide, but despite that it works, it does not affect the assembly of furniture, they are acceptable.

This may be a stupid question, but new to the table saw and have to put on a new measuring tape as well, however I have this exact saw and fence with the marker on the left whereas all videos I've seen have it on both sides, but I'm unsure of how to properly set up the tape for this? Do I put the fence on the blade and call that zero and put the tape down so the marker is on zero right there? I can't find any set up guides or anything for this....
@WorkMateGuy
@WorkMateGuy 4 года назад
Hey Sean, congratulations on your new RIDGID Table Saw. I know you are going to enjoy using it. Hmmm... I am trying to visualize your description and what you would like to accomplish. I am assuming that your table saw came right out of the box with the same scale or tape measure in the front as you see in this video with the white tape and black numbers on the front of the saw. This scale allows you to set the fence on either side of the blade at the correct distance. Perhaps you are thinking that there should be a scale or tape on the back or opposite from the white scale on the front. I don't recall seeing a scale on the back side of this category of saw. With the accuracy of the fence control mechanism on this saw you will not need a scale or tape on the back. Please let me know if this answers your question.

@@WorkMateGuy Yes I actually figured it out. It was a hand me down saw and the person before me didn't have tape on the saw, so I have to put my own tape on. Every video I watched however, the indicator on the fence was on the right and mine is on the left, so that threw me off for figuring out where to put the new tape. I realized if I butt the fence up to the blade, this would "zero" out and the tape would start there, then move the fence to other side and place my other side of measure tape. Thanks for getting back to me however!

How do you adjust the fence scale left and right? The cursor adjustment on my fence doesn't move far enough to the left to align the cursor properly. The scale itself needs to be moved (to the right) so the 13 inch line on the extreme left of the scale is aligned with its cursor. There are some screws underneath, but they don't loosen the scale to allow it to move. There's also an allen bolt under the right end of the scale. Is this the one that needs to be loosened to move the scale? Thanks.

@WorkMateGuy 4 года назад
Hey David, it sounds like it is pretty fare off. How far off is the scale and If you don't mind me asking how are you checking this?
@dacutler
@dacutler 4 года назад
It was so far off that moving the cursor to its limit still didn't set it at zero when the fence was moved to touching the blade. However, I have found the solution (which readers of this might like to note) . . . There are two bolts under the right end of the measuring strip that, if loosened, allow the whole strip to move to left or right. The strip can be zeroed on the left of the top (to the 13 inches mark, which is there so that the extended slide can continue giving accurate readings) and then the cursor can be fine tuned to make It accurate.. These two bolts are also there to mount the slide, and if removed, the slide can be removed.

raheelhameed1 - The heel of the blade or alignment to the miter slot is only adjustable from the back side of the saw. Sorry, to hear of all the alignment problems you are having with your brand new saw. No good! This is unusual. Of all the table saws I have reviewed including your model I have never seen one with so many alignment problems. You definitely need to tell RIDGID about this so that they have the opportunity to correct their assembly line. Ivan Holman Congratulations on your new table saw. It could be a combination of things. The alignment of your fence, blade alignment, and/or miter gauge. If you are doing cross cuts make sure your miter gauge is zeroed and you are feeding it evenly into the blade, a steady hand also helps. If you are doing length wise rip cuts then double check your fence alignment before you cut. A steady hand can make a difference here too.
