Huckleberry is so cute. I remember when he was a baby ...he got so big. So glad he has a happy home since he cannot be released be released back into the wild. Thanks Jessi!
Wow he has really grown to be a big, healthy boy! He’s the cutest! I’ve been following your channel since you adopted Huckleberry. Has he got better with his swimming? It’s so amazing what you do for the animals! Bless you & all of your dedication & hard work ! ❤️😘
Michelle McGraw He seems to be doing quite well with his ataxia most of the time. Every once in awhile he stumbles sideways. He has a bit more trouble with his right eye, often bumping into things with his right cheek or startling away if he's touched on that side because he wasn't expecting it. We still haven't given him a pool of water he can dive in yet, but he's managing wide pools where his feet can just barely touch the bottom. I'm hopeful for his swimming future!
Huck is one of my faves. I have ataxia as well, although he seems to be dealing with his a lot better than I can say for myself. Maybe I just need more treats and a better trainer. 😉💗
You know, I suspect his tail helps him balance a lot better than a human would under the same conditions! I wouldn't have thought of that if you hadn't commented.
I am so happy to have found your channel. 😮 But, I just noticed this video is 4yrs. old. Now...I'm extremely happy!😁 I can subscribe, then watch four years of informative and entertaining videos that I've never seen.🌷Thank you, and I can't wait to watch more! 🌷Your new fan, Pamela “Cony” A.A.A.🐰
I can't believe it's been an entire year. I remember when you were still looking for a name for him. I love Huckleberry so much & you can see the bond is very strong between you two. I hope he keeps improving & doing you & Animals Wonders proud.
I wish I could show this video to the high school vet camp students I taught yesterday! I talked all about clicker training, and then we clicker trained "target" to the school's teaching beagles!
It's actually really heartening to see even experts struggle a bit with training an animal. Each animal has their own personality, and if they don't pick up on training immediately, it doesn't mean you're doing a bad job, it just means it will take a little more time and patience.
Jessi, you are amazing! I love your positive attitude, your level of patience with the animals, and the fact that you always put them first. Your channel always brightens my day! I really love how you show that each species is unique but each individual also has their own personality. I have goldfish and when I tell people that they have different personalities they often giggle as if I am just convincing myself that they do, but they truly do. I hope that your channel continues to grow and that more people can witness how interesting and animals are and how each animal is an individual!! Also, I had heard of clicker training before seeing your channel, but I never understood exactly how it worked. The way you explain it in this video and the other training videos makes perfect sense and I can't wait until I can get an animal to clicker train! (college student probs)
My heart my heart my heart! Huck is adorable 😍 I think he looked quite happy to explore that new environment LOL Proof that he really does trust you towatch put for him, perhaps the public presentations have taught him this. I know how frustrated I can get when an animal just isn't particularly motivated by food and wants to do their own thing - my German Shepherd wasn't ever into food or toys as an adult dog!
Oh my gosh, he's SO BIG now! Has it really been a year? (He's a juvenile/adolescent now, right? Beavers stay with their parents quite a while iirc.) The idea of training a beaver is a fascinating one. I'm interested in seeing how you develop your relationship!
Twice last year, I saw separate beaver roadkill, something I'd never seen in my state of Maryland all 35 years of my life. Both times, I was running late. Both times, I lamented not throwing the carcass in my trunk to make sure that the gorgeous beaver pelt did not go to waste (I'm a leathercrafter with a little butchering experience, how hard could it be?). Regardless or missing out, beaver are amazing creatures, and the one positive takeaway from my experience is that it seems like their numbers might finally be growing in my state. I hope that continues! I love this show, I love Complexly (and semi-related, I love PBS)!
They're already dead. Might as well try to make use of the carcass, right? Now that you made me think of it, I might have to start picking up roadkill to donate their skulls to the university museum. I should put together a kit for that though, so I'm not unprepared and just grabbing dead animal with my bare hands. And I suggest you do that too. Some gloves and whatever you need to cleanly transport such a thing. I've heard that beaver pelts will last literally forever if they're taken care of, so it really seems to be worth the trouble if you feel up to that sort of thing.
Hello Jessie, I'm a recent subscriber, and, I love your videos. I learn something new from every video. Your work with the animals is inspiring, exciting, and admirable. They are so very lucky to have you. Thanks, for all you do. Sincerely, Deborah 🐾 💟🌻
Is training difficult (or impossible) when animals get larger, or do you use the same techniques? For example, you said you picked up Huckleberry - if he gets too big to lift, is it impossible to train him? Does training have to be done early, or not at all? Just curious!
Do you do these training sessions around a normal meal time? It seems like maybe he would be more motivated to get the food reward if he was hungry. Or is it more of one of those, "I have 10 minutes to spare" type of events?
KT Normally I plan training sessions around when the animal will be most hungry. In this case I had to do it in the morning due to scheduling with my videographer/director. It's a bit of a challenge scheduling filming at midnight, lol. I'm glad I got my husband to hold my phone to capture the second session. What you don't see behind the camera is my children happily eating handfuls of grapes I gave them as an offering to be quiet during the session 😁
I am so happy that your human pups will grow up surrounded by so much love. love for them, love for the animals, love for everyone!!! they are going to be amazing human beings!!
Wow Huckleberry's gotten so big! I only saw the video where he was still a baby beaver. I didn't know beavers were so big next to humans! He's still very cute nonetheless
Love the series and appreciate the wonderful work you're trying to do. I'd like to chime in on environment and care for rescued beavers: In addition to other stimulation that mimics or replicates activities in the natural world, captive beavers need to have access to clean water at least 4 times per day. Is that part of Huckleberry's daily routine? I've also been concerned by the restricted space and ad hoc nature of these wild animals' cages as depicted in the videos. Do you have future plans to develop species-appropriate enclosures or to re-home some of your animals with facilities that can provide a more natural living space? Best of luck and I'm looking forward to watching you refine your animal care and evolve this unique project!
OMG I cant believe I haven't seen an animal wonders video in so long! RU-vid never shows AWM videos to me in suggestions :( Thanks so much for your incredible work. I've turned on the bell now.
He reminds me of my kitty. They have the same temperament and my kitty also has some brain issues. (They also have some chunks in the same places 😄) It's so cool to see them learn new things! Go Huck!!! ❤
5:24 "I'm gonna go deal with that". Now I'm wondering what "that" was. Huckleberry buying birch off Amazon Prime? BTW, I had huckleberry ice cream in Alaska. It tasted great -- a sweet fruit that was kind of blueberry raspberry something! Note: No beavers were harmed in the production of this ice cream.
