@@AspiringGent I do make minor repairs with needle and thread but this tutorial for the waist of trousers seems to be a bit overwhelming for myself. I think I will leave it up to masters such as yourself.

Yes, that is because that back seam of the waistband and seat should have been opened and properly taken in. The belt loop would be removed and refit. This was lazy and poor workmanship!!!

Dumbfounded by all the encouraging comments. The tailoring is god-awful, I would make a tailor pay for the repairs if they damaged a garment that bad.

I appreciate the quest for perfection but am also very appreciative of a quick, straightforward, practical approach to taking in the waist. I like that the video isn’t very long, the machine is a home machine, the technique is practical and achievable. I’d rather that this guy keep putting out practical content than get slammed down and quit.

Many dry cleaners also offer a minor tailoring service as well. Or if your trousers are made of wool or cotton a cheap way to take in the waist by about an inch is to soak the waist of the trousers in boiling water.

My gut feeling is taking in a larger pair of trousers by one size is easier and less risky. But I just bought a bunch of vintage tailor made trousers from a thrift shop all apparently made by the same tailor yet with different wait sizes. One pair was much too small for me but they were cheap so I bought them anyway. I just expanded them to the *maximum* that the seam allowance would allow, and that worked. They are snug, but they fit. I feared a big change would throw off the lay of the trouser but they seem fine. I wondered if the old crease or stitch line would show on the expanded seat, but they all steamed out and you can't see them. This was a thick high quality Marzotto wool fabric. Other fabrics might vary. I had a different vintage pair, also bought cheap, and I slimmed them once but did not want to go down too many sizes... but it wasn't enough so I slimmed them again. I should have gone in tight in the first place. I thought it would be too slim and throw off the lay across the seat but it worked fine. I had the most trouble with the belt loops as the fabric was thick. I first machine sewed them but the stitch didn't hold and when I put on my belt the top of the loop popped off (admittedly that was my first ever trouser alteration). When I re-did those trousers, using the sewing machine I hand cranked all the stitches to get the loop back on. I had also tried hand stitching but that was way too hard.

My question too

That seems a bit much. A 38 to 30 would give you 8 inches of material bunched up on top of each other in the back. You will also need to take in the thigh and leg areas or else you will have a fitted waist and awkwardly huge pants. This is going to cost you quite a lot of money, so unless those costed several hundred dollars a pair, I wouldn’t bother.

In most stores you can buy different size jacket and trousers.

zyle kim if your pants are High waisted there isn’t much that can be done. But if you are get lots of air pockets they might still be a but loose

100% there are better more professional ways of doing it but defiantly will work in a pinch.

you have to alter the seat of the pants as well. Might be easier to take it in from the side seams.

@@MajimeTV could you do a little from each? I have to drop 3 inches and I was considering just doing an inch from each side and one from the back. Does this sound ridiculous? Or possibly ok?

@@alisa_and_pup I tried doing that but it will not work. Only pull in the sides unless you are taking the whole pants/skirt apart

I think if you have fabric left over on the back seam you can open. If not you can put a V piece fabric there.
