Have you ever run into an angler who seems to ALWAYS know the EXACT RIGHT FLY to tie on, no matter where or when they're fishing? That might seem like a superpower, but really, it's a skill that just takes a bit of time - and effort - to develop. On today's episode, Spencer Durrant walks you through the 4 concepts you need to learn if you want to always pick the right fly for any fly fishing situation.
You'll also learn about:
* Tips for casting dry flies
* Does color actually matter when picking a fly pattern?
* When should you change flies?

U guys should do a video on what all popular dry flys look like then do what the bugs that match that dry fly look like

I realize this is a ‘podcast’ but why not throw up an image of the flies you are speaking of..and I mean not the real fly but the fly you tie on your tippet!

Just met a proff from BYU out fishing in az. Going out on the limb that this was the same guy you skipped class with ;) Thanks for the great content! Can't say how much it's helped this novice.

I didn't make it to BYU (didn't do well enough in High School, and I'm sure that surprises folks, haha) but I fished with a couple of their profs, ha. You bet man! Glad it's helped out.

Sorry I am so late to listening to this week’s podcast!……. With respect to what you said about contrast on flies, is that what a “hot spot” on a fly is supposed to do?
@SpencerDurrant
@SpencerDurrant 2 месяца назад
That's my understanding, yeah. That and the added flash to make it stand out from the crowd, especially if there are lots of naturals in the water.
@milescobb4184
@milescobb4184 2 месяца назад
@@SpencerDurrant thank you. On heavily pressured waters I try to avoid any sort of flash or stand out colors because I feel like the fish would see a lot of that. I will try to change up this tactic and see what happens.

Enjoy most of these ! Im not sure if you mentioned it or not but ive seen some of the most seasoned anglers neglect this one thing when it comes to nymphs . That is split shot . It seems we always want to start with the lightest split shot we think we need, and a lot of times I see people switching there fly before adding another BB . We have to make sure we are getting that fly in there face ! I tend to thing we give trout to much credit ....

Oh yeah, we have a bunch of info on that topic. Nymphing is Alex's bread and butter, and he's done a lot to educate on that topic. If you look through our podcast, there's at least one episode we did all about nymphing rigs.

Ha Spencer! I am always jazzed about fly fishing, and my bad I am from North West Maine so I fish some amazing rivers such as the Kennebago and Magalloway. Thank you for the reminder to work on presentation. It is my next level up skill so I will work at it and report back!

Great content as always Spencer. I enjoyed listening to this while visiting my friend Val on the Fall River here in NorCal. I had a wonderful day fishing and I know a lot of my skills improvement are thanks to Ventures. I think this is maybe my favorite place ever. So beautiful and challenging but ultimately rewarding. Tight lines to all!

So I'm at a new creek or river. Plenty of bugs flying around and no rises, what do you do? There might not be allot of fish in the creek or are they really picky. The things I notice as what I have learned doesn't make sense with the water. Please explain this.
@SpencerDurrant
@SpencerDurrant 2 месяца назад
That's a good question! If there are bugs in the air, but no rises, it could mean that the fish just aren't keyed in on those bugs, or those bugs aren't aquatic insects. It could also mean that there aren't many fish in that river, or that they're focused on the nymphs and emergers and ignoring the dry flies. That just happened to me last week. Me and Alex were out on the water during a good PMD hatch, and there weren't many fish rising. We knew there were fish in that river, but for whatever reason, they just weren't coming up that night. Sometimes it happens.

A quote from my entomology professor "all bugs are insects. However, not all insects are bugs." Everything you mentioned are insects, and Dr. Miller would have called you out everything you used "bugs"😂

I'm one of those guys, always have been since I was young. Don't know what it is but once I get to the water and see it, smell it, watch for a bit, I usually tie on my trusty perdigons, beaded pheasant tails, depth chargers, and my own beaded heavyweight midges, and its game on almost always. I also think it comes along with being around certain parts of water year after year and fishing it in all conditions. I know it may sound weird, but I also feel extremely connected to nature. I honestly think I am suppose to be living in a cabin on a few thousand acres surrounded by several trout filled rivers in the middle of the Rockies somewhere. Otherwise, I tell new folks to start flipping rocks, and see what's hatching, even if they have to use a tiny screen to filter the water for a moment to see what's in it. I also like bread crust and burnt pretzels. I know that was random.

Hi, how about scanning the trout stomach with a small pump when you catch the first specimen? Is that method still valid? I have done it, but sometimes what you scan doesn't make sense. Like the trouts belly is full of scuds during a mayfly hatch???😊
@venturesflyco
@venturesflyco 14 дней назад
Some folks still do it, but it's not common where we fish, or among the people we fish with. And I have to think it doesn't feel all that great to the trout, either.
