I’m from Florida, been gardening here for years. The easiest way to “fix” the sand is to do lasagne gardening... first I do a layer of leaves then I do a layer of chicken manure (I guess you could use that black Cow stuff that was donated). Then I mix top soil, peat Moss and organic mushroom compost. Mix it up good and put that on top, within a year your sand will have changed dramatically and you will love growing in it. Guaranteed! And you will have a ton of worms! I wouldn’t cultivate at all but you definitely need leaves and peat moss.
@danamarie8718
@danamarie8718 6 месяцев назад
Do you use equal parts compost, peat, and top soil? If not, what are the ratios? I’m in North Florida near the beach. It takes a lot to amend this sand. Calling it sandy “soil” is a joke. There is no “soil” component! When I started gardening here I used 50/50 mushroom compost/topsoil. That wasn’t enough. I’ve since added some clay and some peat, but not a lot of either one. I’ve also added alfalfa pellets and biochar to my compost (which I now make myself), and it is working pretty well but I am always looking for ways to improve. No leaves where I live.

What about coconut coir? Is peat better for some reason here in Florida, or is it just because peat happens to be more readily available in Florida?
@danamarie8718
@danamarie8718 6 месяцев назад
@@Bob-w2b8j No, peat moss is not better. IMO, coco coir is probably better, but it’s a lot more expensive than peat moss, especially if you buy it in bags. Big box stores in my area don’t usually have the coco coir bricks, which are much less expensive per cubic foot than the bags. I do keep several bricks of coco coir on hand for when I make potting soil in fairly small quantities, but when I have a large project I usually get bales of peat moss. I get the coco coir bricks from Amazon. I get bales of peat moss from Home Depot or Lowes. It is also a pain for a really large project to rehydrate the coco coir due to the number of large containers you need to hold water. Depending on the condition of your soil, the size of your garden (and your wallet, haha) coco coir could definitely be a viable alternative to peat moss.
@kelliwebb2870
@kelliwebb2870 6 месяцев назад
@@Bob-w2b8j I’ve never used coconut coir so I’m not sure of how well it will do.

Here in Florida, I have tilled in all my grass cuttings through the summer, and all the leaves in the fall into the garden. I don’t think I’ve ever added anything else. It seems to do fine with grass and leaves constantly being tilled in from our 10 acres. So I had tons of grass, and I would collect leaf bags from neighboring communities and till all that in as well. I always had a good garden, but man did it take a lot of organic material to get it there and keep it there, but that’s all it was, leaves and grass.

I have been utilizing the Market Garden technique, apply good organic compost over the sandy soil, amend in a good organic fertilizer (I use the Neversink blend, or Garden-tone, and or Harmony) every time I flip my beds I amend with compost and fertilizer . The results have been remarkable here in Florida zone 9b. When the tomatoes or other heavy feeders are growing I top dress with fertilizer. No till no dig. Nothing better than growing your own vegetables!

I grew up gardening in the red clay in Georgia. My pops used to mulch, mulch and mulch.....very often with kitchen scraps. We would also get seasoned manure from a farm. He didn't like using pesticides and we preferred organic methods. The problem with the clay was always drainage. The sand here in Florida is the opposite. We would have to break up the clay and amend it. At least it would hold nutrients better than this sand. We have to use containers here in Florida near the coast.

Hi Nancy and Hollis, I have watched your show since you were at the older home. It’s amazing to watch how much you work to try to get that dirt to stay. But I think you’ll find that with us (I also live in Florida) here in Florida, that we live on limestone under that sand, and it will continue to steal your nutrients, until you put something under it, like a growth fabric, I assume. I haven’t even tried, because of that fact. I use raised beds. Because I fight this. I’ve lived here for over 45 years. But don’t give up. You do amazing work. And God will bless you. As he has been faithful to you! Thank you for all you do!

Planting monocots in that spot will help pull the herbicides out of the soil. Corn is one. And sunflowers will clean the soil as well. So monocot first then follow with sun flowers. Then you can test it with a bean seed. This will speed the process up on extracting it out

Check with your local streets maintenance department. They pick up all the yard debris, branches, leaves, lawn clippings here and compost them. Then in March, here, they give it back out for free, loading it for you or letting you come get it. We used it in our sandy soil and our struggling gardens went crazy and produced abundantly. Also save all you kitchen scraps and compostable items etc and bury them in your garden.

I am in North Florida, zone 9a near the beach. I have almost pure sand. I add topsoil and compost like Hollis does. I also add biochar, clay, and sometimes coco coir. Biochar needs to be activated, don’t add it directly to the garden. Either soak it in compost tea or if you make your own compost, add it to the compost pile. I also add alfalfa pellets to my compost pile. With the sand it is as much about the tilth as it is about the nutrients. Oh, and add twice as much compost as you think you need. With the heat, humidity, and rainfall it breaks down so fast it almost seems to disappear.

I am not far from you. I am in 9b. When I first started trying to garden here I would pour water on the dirt and in seconds it would be gone. So, I started adding organics and more organics. Finally after ten years I have very good soil. I am adding lots of well rotted wood chips that I get locally. I sift out the big chunks and use them in my walkways. This sand just eats up organic material. I probably have too much organic material now . I am thinking about adding some clay based kitty litter to my beds. Wal-Mart has it pretty cheap. It's even available with charcoal in it. It would probably add some good minerals as well as hold moisture. In about five more years you should be able to back off on the organics to maybe every other year. Thanks for all you do. John Davis Jax Fl

@@danamarie8718 I have just started adding bio-char to my system. I am not sure how much to add. It's New ground for me so I will have to see how it goes. I spread about an inch of charcoal over my chicken coop floor and I let the chickens work it over for a few months. Then I move the coop to the next bed over. I shovel up the top two or three inches of chicken coop soil into 15 gallon buckets and I use it in my bucket garden. When I move the coop tomorrow and shovel off the dirt I will see if I can see any difference in the color of the dirt compared with what I have shoveled up in the past.

I moved up here to NW Georgia with my wife about 5 years ago, and we've been building Raised beds, and every year we amend the soil with Black Kow Compost and never had any issues with it. Unfortunately, we're not sponsored by them, so we've had to pay for the pallets we've been buying. Not a harsh word about their product from me. Our Beds are so lush now, that it probably wouldn't need to be amended this year, but we amended them anyways. Looking forward to another great season, hopefully a season that'll come close to our harvest last year. EVERYTHING we planted did absolutely amazing. That soil you have now after amending it with the top soil looks fantastic Hollis. I looked to see if Home Depot is going to be carrying the Black Kow Top Soil, but didn't see it on their website. Do you know if they eventually will be supplying them with it? Might have to give that stuff a try to see if it would help improve our raised beds even further. Thanks for the video, and I hope ya'll have a blessed day.

Awsome video do yous plant cover crop a mix of Cowpea UT Vigna unguiculata Adds nitrogen, builds organic matter, smothers weeds and controls nematodes; combine with Japanese millet; use as a living mulch under corn; good animal forage; some drought tolerance. Sow in temperate areas November - February; in subtropical areas September - March and in tropical areas . B.Q. Mulch UT Nature's control for nematodes! Brassica napus and Brassica campestris Similar to rapeseed/canola in growing requirements but a selected seed blend containing the highest levels of bio-fumigant compounds combined with high organic matter production; helps to control soil-borne diseases including fungi and nematodes watermelon would love that soil

Love your videos, but curious as to why you chose to live in an area with such terrible soil. It has to be a big expense to have to amend the soil like that.

It was a blessing to get 15 acres zone agriculture at a reasonable price. It was a blessing to us.

Almost all of Florida has soil like this but that's the sacrifice you make for being able to afford a plot of land where the weather is so good and you can grow something 12 mos. out of the year. I live in a small community where I have to grow my veggies in pots and 5 gallon buckets, sitting in what used to be flower beds. Two indeterminate tomato plants produce from April to October, far more than I can eat, so I share with neighbors.
