I feel a tug of war between analysing away from the keys, compared to actually playing and practising. Is it true, e.g., that Glenn Gould spent most of his “practice hours” doing Bach analysis etc., *away* from the piano? Given four hours of practice in any one day, what proportion of that time would you spend studying rather than actually practising??

What you are referring to is 'Mental Practice' which is the one that pianists do away from the piano.. This in my opinion requires a separate video. In this video I tried to show different ways to do a tiny bit of analysis while at the piano (looking at the form, dynamics, time signature, maybe looking at the historical context and even the composer itself).. As per your point about Glenn Gould - I too read that he did hours of music analysis away from the piano! I also read that Glenn Gould used to take long walks between the dress rehearsal and the concert so to 'memorize' the feeling of the piano and the acoustics amongst other things... Not sure how much of that is true though :) To answer your question - I very much incorporate practice and 'studying' the score together but I would say at least 30 mins of pure harmony practice daily would be amazing! A lot of the times my score will be filled with chords, sequences, modulation markings and all other harmony gems amongst other things :) Great question! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

@@UgniusPianist By “harmony practice” d’you mean making notes of chords hidden in the score? Also, I take it you mean you mark up your score as you learn, to show where it modulates, and how it shows repeated patterns (sequences). You seem to be saying you stay at the piano (as did Chopin) to analyse as you go, so that makes my initial question redundant! Thanks for the video.

@@clivegovier2871 Yes I do stay at the piano while analyzing, although the more you analyze at the piano the easier it gets and then you will start to do it away from the piano :) And Yes by 'Harmony Practice' I mean making notes of chords and trying to understand what's the relation between then (sequences, modulation, cadences etc.)
