Hey guys, PotatoMcWhiskey here with a video on how to settler your first city in Civ 6. I see a lot of people struggle with this so I thought it would be worth it to make a guide talking about what goes through my head when I'm choosing a starting location.

It’s interesting watching this a year later and seeing the changes made to harvesting. Magnus isn’t quite as OP anymore. Also, it might b a good disclaimer that some of these strats aren’t quite as strong against players or online play bc of smarter combat, and harvesting too many bonus resources (which are now worth dramatically less) can stifle late game strength against a player who’s built a far more reliable economy and didn’t succumb to your early pressure Edit: also districts now scale by number in the empire too rather than just price, making rushing them beyond the first couple cities rather futile

also worth checking: if u moved ur settler, you wasted a round, but if you go in the special camera for settling, if there are other civs or citystates near you, you may discover them early without meeting them

8:15 so let me get this straight. If someone like me always plays on Epic speed.. The value of moving your settler makes EVEN MORE impact, since it may take 500 turns to win a game, those extra +1 production or whatever where you settle, has an even larger importance for longer and slower gamespeeds, correct? Same as if someone only plays on Online speed, it barely has time to make any difference.
@ntxtv6757
@ntxtv6757 4 года назад
Still have to consider that production needed for your projects is doubled in epic, and halved in online speed. So in fact, in epic if you move 2 turns, you "earn" like 2 turns compared as if you did this in Normal. And you'll "lost" one turn compared to normal if you move you settler one turn before founding your city. So the impact due to game speed is very low. Game speed especially has effect on exploration, and battle plannification (double time to quick make a unit to protect if not prepare during a war).

Not even gonna try to hide it Potato, I'm watching this to study up for my own lets play. I'm no expert so the tutorial's you've done recently are really helpful plus you've started to explain strategies and concepts more in your lets plays which is great! Thanks for the content... keep it up!

Removing forests I think, by removing them with a builder you gain a small burst of production for the turn and reduce the turns that are required for your city to build something.

Potato, when you consider the best spot for first city you have to include the future spot for second city and sometimes, when you're lucky to born in a spot mostly plain like in the play at 17:55 (so you have an initial big sight of the first tiles) the third city spot. I don't like cities too close to each other, cities must "breathe", the third ring of tiles in common at most, if you don't reach for example a resource too far to west, build the city further east and the second to the west.For the rest you're awesome, i discovered many things in your videos.P.S. sorry for terrible english.

This is so helpful. I've recently started playing Civ VI (experienced Civ IV player, but skipped V) and it's baffling just how much has changed. There are so many things I hadn't realised you could do, which would have been good before launching myself into my first game and immediately moaning about the lack of production!

Thank you so much for this awesome video! I settled on turn 8 when playing with an experienced chew and they had such a laugh. Needless to say, I got crushed. No one explained all this to me and I am so glad I found your video. Those guys are in for it next time we game! :)

I always go for domination victory. That's actually the only victory I've ever had. Seems easiest. I dominated the places on my continent. I sail to the next landmass and those empires have skyscrapers and looks advanced af. All I had was farms/mines and encampments and harbors. But had so many units that I squashed everyone. Takes a while tho because u have to manage so many units but it's fun

I think you are overrating a bit settling on a high stat tile. If you are settling next to the good tile, you are still going to work it for most if not all of the game. So your calculations about how many extra resources you are going to get over the course of the game are a bit disingenuous.
@FazeParticles
@FazeParticles 6 лет назад
you only have 1 citizen when you settle. so settle on the highest rated tile. easy logic. yes time is wasted but in the long run you win out easily.
@CompoundInterest-SG
@CompoundInterest-SG 6 лет назад
Counter their Sabotage and Subterfuge If you are always settling on the highest value tile, you are certainly doing it wrong. The value of the tile you are settling on does come into consideration. But it’s far from the only thing you should consider.
@Talamare
@Talamare 6 лет назад
Let's say you have 2 tiles that produce 5 resources each, and you start on a tile that has 3 resources. If you settle instantly, you will work one of the 5 for a few turns get an additional population and then work the secondary resource tile. Usually it takes about 4 turns to get an additional pop. So that's 36 resources in 4 turns; 114 resources in 10 turns. If you spend 1 turn moving, you will instead generate 10 resources per turn. However it will probably likely still take you 4 turns to get an additional population, and that additional population will likely end up working the 3 resource tile you had skipped before. That's 30 resources in 4 turns; 40 in 5 turns to get your second citizen; 105 resources in 10 turns. So, it's not really an early game advantage to move around during the start of the game. Now there is a potential advantage in the mid game. In that if you want to work better tile than that 3 tile, you will have the option to do so. However the inherent disadvantage is that you can't get the upgrade bonus from the other tiles. For example, a Mine provides +3 Production and +1 Adjacency for Industries. This will be locked off if you settle your city on top instead of building a mine.
@ChessJew
@ChessJew 6 лет назад
It's not disingenuous at all - it's just good play. Getting an extra cog right off the bat is a huge deal - you don't have to assign a citizen to it so you can work other tiles, you're getting your first units out that much better, you're exploring faster as a result (getting more huts, more first meeting envoys), and making settlers faster. Civ is a snowball game - getting the maximum out of your city location impacts your entire game.
@Talamare
@Talamare 5 лет назад
@@ChessJew You're right, it's a snowball game, but we have proven that because you delay your population growth, the amount of extra resources is actually incredibly neutral. There is no great advantage or disadvantage to moving or settling in place in MOST cases.

Hi.. sorry.. newb here.. at 1:30 you state that when you settle, the capital takes the tile underneath it and conforms it to 2 food 1 production. At 8:15, you say settling on the Truffle tile will give you three gold. If you settle on a three production tile, does it get reduced to 1? If there is gold, the gold is not impacted, as you mentioned 3 gold. What happens to the resource? It keeps the resource? It doesn't remove it?
@TheBakonBitz
@TheBakonBitz 6 лет назад
Hedel Torres The way I understand it is whichever tile you settle a city on will have a minimum yield of 2 food 1 production regardless of what it was prior to being settled. If the tile yield exceeds 2 food 1 production prior to settling, like say 2 food 2 production 3 gold, then nothing really changes and your pre city yield is the same as your post city yield.
@Agrumin
@Agrumin 6 лет назад
Hedel Torres - you get the bonus from tile type and luxury type, but when you settle on the forrest, the production from forrest disappears.
@DvdAvins
@DvdAvins 5 лет назад
Here is the city yield: Start with what the tile shows. Remove any bonus for marsh, forest. Then, if food is 0 or 1, make it 2. And if gears is 0, make it 1.

How to analyze start positions: If you are playing Civ 6, exit out, then pick Civ IV or Civ V or even Beyond Earth, and start in any position in one of those games instead. You're welcome.
