Back in 2018 I was on Britican somewhere in Guadeloupe we tucked into some bay for shelter, we had some strong winds for a few days coming from almost all directions. When we pulled up anchor three days later we had to make a snails house manoeuvre to get the anchor up. Good thing the last 7-10m of chain was still as straight as we laid it 83 hours before. Some good information in this video, thank you for that. I guess thats why I subscribed. I like your 7:1 Strategy but it is not always possible in crowded anchorage's, I'am happy with a 5:1 scope but it is vessel and ground tackle depended and lets not forget the weather.

Maybe if you need multiple anchors, then your best bower isn't big enough. Modern anchors hold insanely well and one anchor two sizes up from what is normally suggested is a lot cheaper, lighter, and simpler than multiple anchors, rodes, and associated tackle and dinghy rides in a heaving sea.

I did miss the bit about tying a small buoy to your anchor to A- indicate where it is and B- assist in raiing it when it has dug in really deep after a prolonged stay at anchor. What mind of line are used for the other two anchors? I have chain on primary anchor but not sure what else to use for the other anchors.

Great explanation and approach in concept. How do you set and bury 3 anchors 120 degrees apart, combine them with shackles and a swivel all from one boat and then retrieve them all? How do you keep the keel from tripping over the other anchor chains particularly in shallow water?

How do you determine length from anchor to splice

Fantastic class on storm anchoring We have set up triple anchors in the Caribbean when we were dodging hurricanes. My advice is use 3 anchors that can hold your boat. Yes you will swing in a hurricane, but if in a hurricane hole, that can be controlled with triple anchoring. A bit of advice, anchors sell fast during hurricane season.

Perhaps I'm a bit dense..... but how do you break anchors loose in the star configuration.... You can't get over or past any of the anchors to break them out. Can you bring the swivel to the surface, and detach two anchors and put buoys on them so you can break one anchor out at a time? It sounds brilliant until I start thinking about breaking anchors out....

Great anchoring technique, but how do you raise a star anchor? Is there any way without diving?

In the two anchor scenario is there an advantage to setting the second anchor off the stern versus both off the bow?

Anchoring can be a very highly debated subjective topic. To that end, I have never seen the point of anchor swivels. All they do is add a potential point of failure to the anchoring system and provide little to no benefits in return. The fundamental mistake; is off-axis load will subject the cheeks of the swivel huge loads. So does the much advertised Ultra swivel solve this issue? Nope, it only articulates about 30 degrees, which, while it reduces the problem in everyday use and does not solve it when the chips are really down. Wait, it gets worse: The very ball and socket that allows articulation introduces a potential failure point. And the fact that the swivel shaft-made of stainless and therefore subject to work hardening and is torqued over the bow roller every time the anchor is hauled. Stainless steel is, more than most alloys, subject to strange and difficult-to-predict failures when subjected to repeated high loads. The swivels are restricted from articulating in one plane as part of its automated anchor orientation-on-retrieval feature. A “feature” that may increase the chances that it will be subjected to just the sort of loads I worry about-that's no feature, that’s a bug. Bottom line, I firmly believe that for those who feel they must have a swivel, the only right way to install it is with a short length of chain between it and the anchor so it is never subjected to an off-axis load. But this does not solve the problem because the shackle can’t be oriented properly.

Might have missed it. I was making dinner. How far apart should these anchors be? You said the scope but how far apart. I guess it would depend on depth?

At Bendito! What a great anchoring tutorial. Heads up on your batteries a sturdy waterproof case for those cells may be a good idea. A pressure relief valve on the case recommended . Maybe a converted cooler would work. Also consider adding heat strips that your bms can control. Lithium does not like cold when charging. Multiple mppt controllers for your solar also good to maximize charging if panels shaded.

Forgot to mention, you probably visited during a 13 or 17 year hatch cycle of those cicadas.

Think really carefully about why you are anchoring with two or more anchors. Is your decision based on sound reasoning? Or are you setting two or more anchors because the activity itself makes you feel like you have done your best to prepare the best for given conditions? I myself have succumbed to this type of self delusion. So before y'all start patting each other on the back about how wonderful this out of date complicated technique is in reality just a plan old bad idea. Bahamian, Star or Tandem anchoring, ONCE used by voyagers, in which two anchors or more anchors are set, is supposed to be the ultimate anchoring technique, or is it? It is very difficult to properly set one or more anchors. One or the other is almost certainly going to be taking the load, while the other is lying there providing little to no effect. If you have to move while it’s still blowing, getting your tandem rig back on deck will be a maneuver that will range from almost impossible to down right dangerous. So why add the complication of Bahamian, Star or Tandem anchoring for a benefit that is an illusionary security blanket? But wait as is almost always the case with cruising it can and will happen at the worst possible moment. Being a oh so careful skipper, what if you had to slip anchor at the height of the blow, say due to another boat dragging down on you, or an unexpected wind shift bringing a big sea in through the anchorage entrance, what then? For voyaging sailboats I would recommend a modern, at least one size larger than the anchor manufacturer’s recommendation (mine is two sizes larger) with all chain and good snubber. To compensate for the additional weight on the bow, I use calibrated marine hot dipped galvanized G70 chain. The simple safe one big modern anchor; except in very rare circumstances is in my opinion the way to go. William Occam's razors principle philosophy of a belief that simplicity is almost always the correct solution.
