How to (and how not to) Laser Cut Chocolate

I had a rather misguided desire to figure out how to laser cut chocolate well enough that you could build models out of it. And through many trials and tribulations, I finally figured out how to get reasonable results when laser cutting chocolate!
You can find instructions at: www.instructab...
Supplies I reccomend for the final process:
-Laser Cutter:
-Kitchen Scale: amzn.to/2Htig3t
-Pallet Knife: amzn.to/2Htv2Px
-Digital Thermometer: amzn.to/2qYMhgq
-Tempered Chocolate: amzn.to/2JtcZW9
-Wax Paper

How does this not have more views, very well done! Very well thought out and documented. I'd be interested to see how the factory tempers the chocolate and if that could be reproduced on other types of chocolate used. And great idea with the thickener!

Another super video. There is a you tuber called Red Nile and Blue Nile. He does chemistry experiments and is extremely diligent explaining each step of the process, each diversion, idea, etc. You both share the ability to explain the complex and keep it simple and concise. Maybe the two of you should meet? Anyway, I'e been doing a lot with my laser and I cook a lot as well. You did convince me not to build a chocolate dinosaur but the idea of sandwiching chocolate between wax paper and cutting out parts to assemble will go into my idea bag. I just found you a few minutes ago and immediately subscribed. I'm looking forward to more videos and want to find a way to madly increase your subscription size. People have told me I should do something with my laser on you tube because I'm doing lot of very different things but I don't have the patience to do the filming or the editing. It takes a huge amount of time. Keep going. I"ll send you a picture or two of some of the things I'm doing for your amusement.

Thanks for the feedback! I really enjoy doing projects, but have had a very hard time getting through the video making process for projects that I have done. I have been trying to get back into it, so I appreciate hearing from others that have found use in some of the stuff that I share. I've had more success making written tutorials on most of the projects that I have done; if you want to see a few other laser cutter related projects, one of the places you can find them is on Instructables under the same username (www.instructables.com/member/Fisherck/instructables/).

Love your approach, your thinking, your tenacity until you succeed. Critical and objective look on your own achievements. Great human qualities ! Congratulations for the experiment and the result. From France.

Thank you so much! Great insights. I plan to laser cut some chocolate for letters instead of using molds - hopefully it works!

I realize that this is 2 years later, but when handling chocolate, use gloves. Your body temp will melt the chocolate no matter if tempered or not. Great video though. I never would have thought about adding a thickener.

Does your cutter have an air assist nozzle? I'm taking notes as I plan to cut wax to make bras casting masters.

My laser cutter does have an air assist, and I set it to the lowest that I could (~5 psi or less). The biggest difficulty that I had when trying to cut chocolate (and I suspect wax will behave similarly), was the width of the material removed when laser cutting, and having a high pressure air assist did not appear to help it.

@@Fisherck Thanks - I will experiment and see what happens. I'm planning to get carving wax with a slightly higher melting temp - hopefully I can vaporize it rather than melt it.

What laser printer did you use this is so Awesome !

Glad you enjoyed it! I have a (cheap) 50 watt Chinese laser cutter. Chocolate isn't too hard to cut through, so you should be able to use most laser cutters for similar chocolate cutting projects.
