Check out the new Diamond Mounter merch!
cbilton.creator-spring.com There is a common technique for annealing long lengths of wire that I have seen done multiple times which I dont like!
Jewellers will roll up the entire length of wire in to a messy birds nest looking thing and claim its better to anneal it like that. It doesnt work very well!
The wire is now all crossed over making it impossible to evenly anneal it.
Some parts will quickly be annealed and others will have barely begun to get hot. Trying to get the hard to reach parts annealed may even lead to accidently melting some sections!
I understand this technique may be necessary for very long lengths of wire. Making a chain by hand for example you may be annealing wire 2 metres long or more so to coil it up is the only sensible option. If you really need to roll up wire then do it very neatly and try not to have too many gaps amongst the coils. Then it will anneal almost as a solid large ring which is good.
For short lengths of wire that can easily be handled on the bench (anything up to around 120cm I'd say) then keeping it straight and moving across the block as its heated is my preferred technique. This also means the wire doesn't have to be un rolled to be worked on again so the full benefit of annealing is ensured.

Check out the new Diamond Mounter side channel!
Its called 'Diamond Mounter Clips'
Its compiled of short clips taken from previous videos to
highlight useful techniques and information I was teaching.
No intros, no outros just straight to the essence of what
was useful in the video!

As of December 2020 all new entire Diamond Mounter full instructional guides are reserved for classic and official patrons of the channel only.
Please click the link above to be taken to the Diamond Mounter patreon page where you can join.
Become a classic patron you will not only be able to view part 2 of full instructional guides but also be thanked personally on the next youtube upload! You will also have access to all future uploads 2 weeks before they go live on youtube.
Official patrons have all the benefits of a classic patron but also gain access to regular exclusive content. Behind the scenes, personal jewellery projects Im working on, I share ideas for future videos, photos and stories from throughout my career as a professional jeweller.
Also Official patrons are welcome to suggest ideas for future videos and contact me anytime if they need advice for their own jewellery making endeavors.
Classic patronage is just £5 a month and to become official costs only £10 a month.
I believe this is great value.
As the number of full instructional guides continues to grow the value will be even more considerable!
With patrons support I will be able to offer far more information than I am currently able to.
With nearly 25 years of knowledge gained in the jewellery trade working with some of the best diamond mounters in the UK I can train practitioners of jewellery making, up to and far beyond the skill level found in High Street jewellers workshops.
I have been lucky enough to have been taught by actual Bond Street shop model makers and my ambition is to share what I have learned through out my career to as many people as possible.
My vehicle to do this is the Diamond Mounter RU-vid channel and now after 1 year of uploading video guides, its time to take it up a level.
My ambition is to be able to make instructional videos with not just silver, but gold and platinum also. Some proper jewellers soldering equipment will enable me to create much more special pieces too! This will open up a whole new world of information I have to share.
There are many specific methods and techniques used for the different precious metals and knowledge about gemstones I can teach that will never enter my videos unless I am actually working with them.
If you may be interested in becoming a patron please click the link below-

Always useful to go back to basics Chris. Thanks for this video and explaining the "whys" and "wherefores".

I am so glad you’ve done this vid. I’m self taught, still a beginner really, so I’ve seen lots of vids were people roll up wire to anneal! Luckily for me, my logical brain kicked in and I have been annealing the way you’ve just shown for the exact reason you’ve spoken about 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Thanks really good. If you think like that and always consider a better way to do things then you can become very highly skilled!

Probably not applicable to everyone since I’m in America, but for making chainmail wire I go to a public camping ground, make a small fire, put the wire on top/around the fire and let it burn down then bury it in the ashes. Probably doesn’t work on softer metals you use in jewelry

And how do you cool it, let it cool naturally? What is tempering?

Hello there! Would you recommend this same method for 8-12 ga copper and brass wire?

Hi what kind of gas/torch do you use?

Hi, I have a question if you don't mind, so, I've been really struggling to find dead soft wire locally, and it cost 10 or 12 times more if I was to order internationally, so the question is, can we soften a wire's temper, (is it the same way to say, can we anneal it, idk) ? Like if the wire is originally half hard can it be soften to dead soft ? I've quit engineering school, the thing I remember, the time it requires to cool down is necessary for metal's hardness. If you quench it in cool water it'll be really hard, or if you cool it down in sand or in hot oven it will be softer... etc. Can it be done without using a 500 degree C oven 😅

I can only suggest annealing then letting it cool slowly for the best effect of softening. I dont know about putting it in the oven! Maybe not. Just get a brick to lay it on and a hardware store blow torch you should be able to anneal wire

Do you have any suggestions for annealing spools? When I do batches of wire, I heat up my enamel kiln to annealing temperature, but it's a hassle for one-off drawings. Japanese can be somewhat of a hill to climb. I can recommend Anthony Metivier's method for memorisation. Just Google "anthony metivier japanese". Thanks for sharing.

Thank you I will certainly check out the Japanese learning guy. Not sure about the spools maybe just a big wooly hot flame with heat reflecting bricks around it to hold the heat all around it??

@@DiamondMounter you're welcome. I use his method for memorisation of all sorts of stuff. Yeah, that's along the lines of what I do. Have a nice one!

There is just ZERO info on properly annealing gold. Like, 14k vs. 18k vs. 22k. Do we air cool? Do we quench immediately? In water? In alcohol? Why this and not that? Sooooo empty in that intermediate area. And then there's the "hold it for 5-10 seconds at cherry red". WTF? Do they know how long 5-10 seconds is? Jeeez!! Please help! Thanks Chris
