If you don't know me already, my name is Eric and I've worked in finance for the last eight years starting as an intern and now working in executive roles, so I've both interviewed candidates and been interviewed for finance roles many times.
Let's get to it.
"Why finance" interview questions are hard to answer.
For some reason, we just aren't ready for someone to ask us, "why are you interested in finance?"
The reason these questions are so hard to answer is that many people go into finance for money - and that is a pretty boring answer (and also a boring reason to work in a field)!
Fortunately for us, finance is an exhilarating and dynamic field. I could give you a MILLION reasons why I work in finance that have nothing to do with money.
In this video, I give you ideas on how to answer four of the most common versions of this interview question.
FOUR POSSIBLE "WHY FINANCE?" INTERVIEW QUESTION ANSWERS:

DISCLAIMER: This is how I would answer these questions, but it doesn't mean that it is the best or the only way.
At the end of the day, all finance people help to allocate capital, however, they do so in very different contexts.
Answers to "why corporate finance" interview questions should revolve around an interest in operating and building companies - especially with startups.
Answers to the "why investment banking" interview question should revolve around interest in structuring transactions, creating liquidity, and building value that way.
Responses for an MBA candidate would just depend on the interests of the person but could be a blend of all of these answers, or something else entirely.
