How to apply Bass Guitar into your Black Metal song?

My takeaways: 1)Follow whatever the drummer is doing that you can also do well. 2)You can do whatever you feel like doing if you think it sounds good 3)Tremolo picking to keep up with the guitar part isn't a great idea 4)The bass shouldn't try to copy the role of a guitar - maybe use another guitar or something Great video. As a bass player and a black metal zealot myself, for you in the comments, if you have problems with writing the riff play around the 5th or 4th- it adds alot of dimension and "atmosphere" to the riff. Also, the 4/4 rock beat used in alot of bm bands can be well played along the ghost-note ridden "blues" bass track (if you can catch my drift, like Marduks Wolves or Goatmoons son of the northwind). Remember, be creative but never overdo. Živi mi bili.

The funny thing is, that my bass lines usually stick to what the guitars are doing, but in a much more complex way. The reason for that is, that I can't write a good guitar riff for shit and actually play it, while I use a VST for bass, so I can go mad. As such, my bass lines end up being super groovy, while the guitars are just there to make noisy melodies. I also make sure the bass is audible. I love it when the bass is audible. Now, that might not be how to do black metal properly, but I honestly prefer it this way. I love complex basslines. Hell, if I could, then I'd put a bunch of slap bass all over my black metal.

Thanks for the advice. I'm still new to bass and I am in a black metal band. I have a Dave Ellefson Jackson signature bass 5 string. It has active pick ups (EMG) and it gives it a nice tone in metal.

dude awesome video i use a combo of all of those though i do deviate from the snare and kick and sometimes play with the cymbals but i also do stuff like deviate from the riff to do a slide but yeah dude awesome vid look foward to a new video from you me and my wife both.

No, you play whathever is ok for the song. There isn't something like "a bass pattern" for aggresive music. Play what you believe will make the song greater. I always play as fast as guitar, the same number of beats. I like it, guys from the band like it. Like in the punk rock, Post Regiment where the bass player is really awesome. If you like your way, it is ok.

Vortex playing alone does not sound as black metal as one would think! he plays every where on the bass! before getting a guitar, i had a Bass, still have it but it's pickups are crappy, i use MIDI for Bass and Drums... well "used" since all my programs are on my old PC that is in pieces, not broken but i changed everything out of the box except the power supply! playing Bass has unofficial rules, 1 play relating notes to the guitars, 2 do not saturate with too many notes, you are like a padding of bass, or a layer! if you put all the bass in the guitars, the dissonant chords eat all the space you have to record with in ONE track! playing alone is OK but WHEN RECORDING, TURN IT DOWN AND LEAVE THE BASS FOR THE BASS GUITAR! like: guitar 1 polarity = + left channel guitar 2 polarity = - right channel Bass guitar polarity = + in both channel! both guitars will have space to coexist and the bass will not cancel it self out since there is none, it all comes from the bass guitar!
