Roof maintenance is a huge part of owning an RV. It doesn't take long for the seams to start to crack. Once water gets in you will have so many other issues. Stop this from happening by properly cleaning and sealing your RV roof. In this video we cover the Dicor LAP sealant, clean up our joints and seal those cracks so water doesn't get in.

I found your video quite helpful as I had difficulty finding drying times. Great too about not pouring mineral spirits directly on the roof! I cleaned well with super clean and stiff nylon bristle brushes, rinsed with water and wiped the seams with acetone to finish. I’m very happy with the final product. Thank you!!

From what I read, mineral spirits is less caustic than acetone, but the manufacturer of eternabond tape recommends acetone. What are your thoughts?
@michaelcarlson8153
@michaelcarlson8153 Год назад
I used Dawn dish soap and a hand scrub brush initially. I did use a stiffer tooth brush which actually helped a lot on the sides and the roof. On the sides I cut out the old caulk, tooth brushed and cleaned it with denatured alcohol, then caulked all side seams. Mine had a leak on frame of the slide out at the rivets. My self leveling caulk looked about like yours. I used a long blade in my razor knife (about 3") to go around everything I could. to level and cut it down to clean caulk. I also used a fiber stick, it is plastic with scraper on one end and a rounded tip on the other. I peeled up and off a lot of the old caulk that was way too goopy and what I could not, I cut kind of a V in the area to give the caulk an easy level. I used PROFLEX RV on the seams and WELLUCK SELF LEVELING CAULK on the roof for a smooth top. Maybe it was overkill but I then used 4" E-SDS RV REPAO TAPE to go everything that could possibly leak. If I didn't need the 4", I cut it down to 2". I also used a piece of plywood and a pipe to cut circles in the tape. Once completed, I cut in the edges and tight spots with FLEX SEAL and rolled the rest of it. So far, so good... but it is spring 2023. I hope this helps
@OurCrazyRV

That sounds like a great fix. We were doing some inspecting on our roof this spring and everything looks good. We added eternabond in another video as well and I don’t think it’s overkill.

You've got to love the olde timey nicotine stained tarter color of that skylight. I have the same one that I'm about to replace. I ❤ the RV industry: Is it cheap to manufacture? ✅️ Can it be produced from recycled sporks? ✅️ Bonus, it's eco friendly. Does it look good for 6 months so we can sell the unit? ✅️ Now make 50,000,000 of them and install them on every single brand of RV regardless of how much we're charging for the RV. Bonus, when it fails in a few years, mark it up 5000% "Now, this here... This is a great skylight. Congratulations, Skeeter on that revolutionary design innovation! You just saved us $0.72 a piece and we'll never have to worry about foreign competition because we do it best. Yessiree... in Elkhart we sure love a long term strategy."

+Jim Fowler I think we can apply this across most industries, but I would agree that most things are built cheap / surprisingly expensive to replace. We need to replace the fenders as they have started to deteriorate and they want over 300 each…. I know it cost some time to make the mold, but I’m sure it’s only $10 in plastic. I also think that skylight color is kinda gross lol. Safe travels!

Mineral Spirits leaves an oily residue - DiCor states to use Denatured Alcohol. You may want to check if the DiCor stuck. I would be interested in knowing if you had any issues. Step 1, use DiCor cleaner, use a brissle brush at first and finish with paper towels and scrubbing. Then rinse with water and let dry. Then use paper towel with Denatured Alcohol and clean all again try - do not spill onto roof. Let dry then apply the DiCor
@OurCrazyRV

Good Observation. We have had no issue with using mineral spirits and the DiCor sticking. I could see it leaving an oily residue, however our previous sealant was so porous that I think anything would stick to it :)

Just don’t use alcohol on Dikor 252 (can’t speak for other versions) once it is applied, to smooth out the Dikor, as it won’t cure properly.

Mineral spirits most definately does not leave an oily residue. I use it to clean parts. Fresh mineral spirits flashes off quite quickly and leaves a super oil free finish

Thanks for the helpful video! I have a leak around my bath fan on a 2021 Flagstaff Micro Lite 25FKS. It has the popular black hood over it too so you can leave it open under more conditions. With the fan closed the rain water was dripping in from the outside of the housing piece, at the very outer edge of the housing in the bathroom, so I think it's either coming from where there wasn't enough sealant put around the housing it appears or at the center of loops where the cotter pins fit into hold the hood in place. After I clean the area I'll have a better idea. Have you ever tried bleach spray to clean parts of your roof? I ask because I was going to try it rather than pull the trailer out of storage and try to back into my skinny driveway accessible at only a funky angle to have a water hose available. I live on a road where I can't park it for very long. Have a fantastic day!
@OurCrazyRV
@OurCrazyRV Год назад
Thanks for the question. No we have never used bleach spray. I’m sure it would also work as there are a variety of things out there. I’m not sure what affect bleach has on a rubber roof if you have one. They seem to be quite temperamental.

Brake cleaning fluid cleans the seals also
@OurCrazyRV

Interesting, that would make sense. I imagine brake cleaner would also be hard on the rubber roof membrane so you would not want to let it sit on the rubber roof. Would I be correct in saying that?

what's the lowest temp that you can apply
@OurCrazyRV
@OurCrazyRV Год назад
That is a good question. From what I can tell in cold weather, warm container at room temperature 60° (16°C) - 80° (27°C). And then from a forum question I found - The tech at dicor told me that 40 degrees was the minimum but that the tube should be at room temp. She also said it will cure, but that it'll take longer to cure and won't self level as easy. She also recommended that I warm up the surface a little with a hair dryer.

Power wash?
@OurCrazyRV
@OurCrazyRV 5 месяцев назад
I feel like I could rip through the rubber membrane with a good power wash. I'm sure one could do it, but personally I feel like I could do a lot of damage by power washing this particular roof. It would depend on a lot of factors such as how powerful your power wash is, the quality and condition of your roof, but I would not do that with my roof.

I get conflicting information. I thought Dicor wouldn't stick to itself...
@OurCrazyRV
@OurCrazyRV Год назад
According to their website - Repairing lap sealant or adding sealant: If, after a period of time, the lap sealant needs touched-up or additional seal is needed, use a cloth dampened with mineral spirits to eliminate all foreign materials from the surface of the seal, let set for at least 15 minutes and apply Dicor lap sealant (501LSW, 502LSW, 551LSW) directly over the existing seal - allowing the new sealant to touch the membrane and/or accessory surface.

drop 60K on a camper, and this is the garbage finish they use for the roof. not criticizing the application, criticizing the industry standard. I can go in a 1970's school bus, or in a 10K enclosed landscaping trailer and find better quality that will last without leaking. The industry needs to do better
