Here’s another tip. Usually they pick from the first pool of resumes. They can reject all vets and other people if the resumes are trash. At that point they will ask HR to go to the next pool (public people) Your tentatively could turn into referred to hiring manager if this happens so don’t give up. Apply for as many as you can.
Thats why its important to go through csp before leaving the military. Theres a program that takes u straight to a federal job. They do ur cv n train u. U start work after a month
Totally agree! It is a long process with getting a govt job. I was blessed to get in through a hiring fair under Pathways. I went to the fair July 2015 and got interviewed on the spot. Rec'd a tentative offer letter in Aug 2015 along with security clearance paperwork...met with a special agent in Oct 2015 to go over my credit, background, and other questions for my security clearance and then the waiting game started....finally received a final offer letter in April 2016 asking me to start asap, but had a current job by then so after a two weeks notice and getting last min things situated, I started May 2016...so in all, it took about 9/10 months for me!!
A friend of my aunt told me about the job fair...had she never told me, I would have never known...and while working there, they did a number of job fairs, but it was always through word of mouth @@2009gradcu
@@2009gradcu Current people who worked there passed around the flyer via social media and emails and someone emailed it to my mom and she forwarded it to me. That's why I always try to put it out via social media whenever they have a big hiring so others can see it.
Hi! Fyi most agencies do not scan resumes! The assessment helps us narrow it down (we don't even see resumes that don't meet minimum qualification * determined by the self assessment (all those questions u answer in the start of your application) . The resumes that are qualified we review each one...we compare the resume with the specialized experience listed in the job post... we are looking for your experience doing the work noted there...For social work, the education requirements are nonnegotiable.. this is an opm (Office of Personnel Management) requirement ...... the "referred to the hiring manager" email means that your resume made the stack of resumes that go to the hiring official usually the person who will ultimately make the hiring selection and from there that official will pick who they want to interview. Note: social work jobs are executed service (it more of an at will hiring.... In short ) ....also depending on where/what agency u are applying the budget yr might slow down or speed up the process. The new fiscal yr in the government starts oct.1... sorry for the long long post. Okay bye!
Thanks for the video. Some great points and very helpful to new applicants. Want to point out that tentatively qualified does not mean that there are necessarily others who are better qualified than you. Tentative qualification is just initial qualification based upon your self-appraisal or a review of your resume. Veterans et al., if passing through the first vetting step, would also receive a tentative qualification email. In addition, you may actually want to apply to job postings that are open for 6 months+ if they are "roster" postings. For example, the IRS will post a 9 month or 12 month roster, needing 2000 seats filled. Although it may take even longer to hear back on these positions, anecdotally they are hiring more with these rosters and it's not just an attempt to bypass the public and hire internally. If they wanted to do that they would open the application to internal only/competitive/excepted service or post a direct hire announcement.
This is a great description on how long it takes to get a job within the government. I've been with the gov now 15 yrs and trying to get a fully remote, so far its been 9 months and more than 30+ applications 😅
Oh girl I was just getting anxious over this deadline and realized my job I wanted to apply for wasn't even open to the public. Thank you for the guidance and reality check!
Thank you so much for this video :) it was so helpful and cleared a lot of things up for me. I applied for a Pathways Internship in November and just received a temporary offer in early March, I totally did not know what the timeframe would be but it was so worth it! Thanks for all the advice, I'll look at it moving forward.
All of the waiting depends on the HR. Some places are fast, and I saw results in less than a month (interview).. Some are slow.. You are correct. It is a waiting game. Do, call them if they are taking long, because after you accept a position I am sure there are time constraints.
I didn't want to leave without saying thanks for your very informative breakdown of the hiring process and the most effective way to apply for Government jobs. I have watched a lot of you tube videos on this issue but none has been as clear and understandable as yours, great Job!
My experience in HR is that jobs open for only a week or two already have someone selected and they don't want to leave open too long to avoid having too many people to add to a certificate of eligible candidates. It's a waist of time keeping an announcement open for longer than two weeks when someone is already selected. They are only opening for a week just for competition
Thank you!!! I learned a few new tricks for advertising and promoting myself. I will say it is a lot harder to land a job. These tricks work. The layout..bold font to pin point.
Thank you Kimmy for this insightful video. A Federal job interests me bc it seems stable, good time off, good pay and benefits as well as doing good for our country and a change of pace from corporate world. With all the long wait, is a government job worth the wait? Is your management good?
Definitely need help. I’ve been in the navy for almost a decade as an E6. I want to get out more than anything. But want something federal to honor my military service.
Thaaaanks for the insight, Kimmy. Can you share more insight about how dense a Federal resume can be, and if there should be more than one? "I've heard" that we should be listing all our skills used in jobs and volunterring moreso than just the tasks in sequential jobs. Thanks for the insight.
I’ve been applying for 4 years & I even have the resume format they use from my aunt..applied to at least 200 positions with ZERO interviews…its crazy..I’ve been a state government worker in the professional Administration field for 10years
Very hard to get a job and looking on the computer to apply for positions is even more difficult!!! They younger people don’t even desire to work for the Goverment and then they will have no chose to circle back!
I find it interesting that when I used to be in the military ..I ended my military career at an E5... But after getting up until now my civilian career my skills and qualifications are equivalent to a gs 12... But for some reason I can never get an interview I always get an email back saying based on my resume I do not qualify for this rank... Which makes me think when they look at your resume did you have to have a gs-12 equivalent job in the government or a gs-12 equivalent job in the military because what I do right now it's equivalent is just in a corporate setting
I got an email that stated I was tentatively qualified and then in the next section it said I had been referred to the hiring manager…then in the third section it started off saying if I’ve been referred I might be contacted by the hiring official.. but I am a veteran and recent grad who is using a 10 point preference… So that could be why I was referred as well. It depends on your situation…. It’s a case by case basis and it depends on the hr personnel whose looking at your documentation. I applied on a Monday and received an email on Friday.. the email I received on Friday told me that I was tentatively qualified and that I was referred to the hiring manager in the same email… so we will see if I get an interview and I will keep you all updated.
@@brainlessgonzo6558 Nope!!! I’ve still been applying for other jobs and will continue until I get a job loool.. I’m not giving up !! I called the specific job and asked for an update and they stated they are still in the process of sending out notifications but I guess it’s a very slow process .. I’ll keep you updated and thanks for asking!! No matter what you do don’t give up!
Hahaha same here, I got an email saying I was referred to the hiring manager, and literally 30 seconds later, I got another email saying that I was not selected for the position. 😅
i worked for private before. high salary, high stress. low benefits, no pension, no healthcare when you retire. when i switched to Gov jobs, everything is opposite. i am never going to go back to private sector ever again
Thank you for the information. I want to work for the government as well. Just completed my BA and looking forward to find a job in the government. I studied business admin. Should I start applying now?
I applied for a gov job in May. It took 5 months to be invited for testing. Then almost 2 months for 1st interview, 2 weeks later 2nd interview. Now I’m waiting…..
Hey, thank you for this! So I’m actually a veteran so I was curious if I got an email that says tentatively qualified do you think it’s still worth it or no?
Happy I found your channel. Graduating with a masters in human services in a month. Very interested in getting a government job. I will scan your QR code to setup something with you. Thank you.
LMSW looking to transition into macro work. Are there specific titles we should be looking for? Also, resume wise, do you have a resume builder or example you went by?
I’m a disabled veteran/current police officer and I haven’t gotten a single interview with any of the federal police agencies. My application keeps getting submitted, received, and then months later I’ll get an email saying that they’re no longer considering my application. Doesn’t make sense because I’m super qualified. 7 year military with no blemishes on my record, 2 years policing also with no bad remarks in my record. So why no interview? I think the website is kinda garbage.
USAJOBS is absolutely not garbage. Perhaps it is your disability? I've been a fed foir 29 years and disabled veterans receive bigtime hiring preference so something isn't adding up.
I am a recent graduate and only qualify for these jobs due to my high GPA. How do you suggest I write my resume in this case? I have job experience but nothing that specifically adresses the specialized experience
Hello Kimmy could you please provide me with the list of staffing agencies like TISTA and ROH that collaborate with the VA? I'm on an H1B visa and interested in employment opportunities with the VA in contact roles. If you're unable to share the list, could you guide me on how to find this information? Thank you.
Referred means your resume was sent to the hiring manager for review. Unfortunately it seems every government agency is different they don’t all send you notices for each step in the hiring process.
What if it says, you were found: eligible for the following positions: GS-1109-11, you are tentatively eligible for this series/grade combination based on your self rating of your qualification? Does this mean, I will not get an interview?
Yes, it is possible to receive an interview. You will receive a second e-mail that says whether or not your application was forward to the hiring official. Its a waiting game. So the eligiblity email is great, it means that your resume passed the first screening.
@@jailynnjhn No worries, The process can be lengthy. Hang in there. Keep applying. Apply everyday! I did this for a year straight and FINALLY got an offer, that was 3 years ago. Never left since.
Great video, I want to apply for a job with the government however I have an extensive gap on my resume. I had a baby, had to stay home during a pandemic, and then moved to a new state. How do I overcome the gap on my resume.
I'd actually put that on the resume. I'm no expert, but it is a role you filled, and one of responsibility at that, so you may as well put it in and show that you weren't in jail or slacking off.
I have a phone interview tomorrow in office automation transcription, telework is offered but the job is 3 hrs from home. Would they allow training at my local VA and the work remotely?
Hello I hope someone can answer this question. I applied for a purchasing agent which is what I did in the army, and I qualified for the 10- point preference. I noticed you stated in your video that if your email stated tentatively qualified then don’t waste your time, but my question is does this still apply if I was referred to the hiring manager for the position.
Hello Everyone , I am From Colombia and I am looking for a oportunity jobs in other country , and in this video I can see that it is for native people, can you recommend other pages to achieve my dream? , also i want to my english level practice with other person , I don't know if you can help me !! this video is amazing desription about jobs in Usa.
I currently hold a bachelors in HR management. I start my Masters in the spring. Should I apply now or wait until I graduate with my Masters to make more money?
Look into Government Contractor jobs in the mail room. Try getting a security clearance that way, then down the line start trying for Government positions.

I’m a high school dropout and still don’t get my GED I’m trying to get one but I’m just kind of getting distracted so I’ll never get a government job the most government job I ever want to become a police officer but my dream job is dead
@@NaijaSaid3302 that’s nice to hear that but trust me I can never get a GED and even if I do, I wouldn’t be able to get the job because of my past job actually still ongoing
Yes you can At that point they are looking for experience if you do not have a bachelor degree My job was four years of experience so you can definitely gain some experience in high school if you apply yourself
