Hi there, no not yet, B1 B2 visa holders cannot get SSN. You need to wait for the work visa. This is not legal advice and it's best to check with your employer's lawyer for the best way to move forward.

I don't think so. If you apply for an SSN, your immigration status should be current and not expired. For the wait times, it usually takes about 2-3 weeks for you to receive your SSN in the mail.

No you wont be able to apply for ssn on expired visa, unless you become eligible for a certain type of work visa, asylum or green card, once you overstay your visa you become an undocumented alien. apply for Itin number instead.

hi, I got my SSN when I came to the US with my non immigrant visa. but you can apply for your SSN as part of I-485 (adjustment of status) or I-765 (application for employment authorization document or EAD). The EAD usually comes before the green card so try applying for that if you haven't yet.

@@CluelessintheUS This means even if i do not have green card, I can still get the SSN on the basis of I-485? Second question, can i apply for SSN even if i do not have EAD card or not eligible for one yet?

Hi, if you apply for the SSN as part of your I-485, you can get it as part of your green card application. I don't completely understand your second question. But in our experience, my wife got her SSN together with her EAD. Because we applied for it together with her I-485.

Sorry, no this doesn't work with a tourist visa. You need a student visa, work visa or immigrant visa to get SSN.

My understanding is that you can apply for SSN once you get to the US. That's what I did. What's your visa class?

lol. yeah, family petitions take a very long time!! I'm sorry I am not familiar with that process. But from what I know, you can apply for a social security number once you're in the US and you either have a non-immigrant visa, or you're already in the process of adjustment of status (USCIS Form i-485).
