In this video I will show you how to apply POR15 the right way!
I started out by having my frame sandblasted and prepped the frame using POR15 Degreaser. Then I used POR15 metal prep and then I allowed the frame to completely dry. The outside temperature was in the 90's and was very humid as well. There are a lot of videos where the out come was very poor using this product. I had a very good out come and my opinion is they did not prep the surface correctly or the temperature was to low not allowing the POR15 to cure properly.
I personally would recommend using POR15 and also would recommend following POR15's directions to the tee!

Best stuff ever. Foam applicators are nice because bristles bend and flick paint spots on you etc. Have Acetone handy for clean up. Lots of old rags and cardboard helps.

There Ty Coat primer states to stir not shake so no air bubbles form in it. If I were painting the frame, I would have used a cheap Harbor Freight spray gun for $15. After I used it I just toss the gun as there not worth cleaning.

I have a cheap spray gun but at the time I didn’t have a big air compressor.

Why not shake the can while its closed

If it has any air in the can it cause it to dry out faster from what I heard. It’s been awhile since I have used it. I really don’t remember if a new can would be effected by shaking it.

Great video, Thanks. I am thinking of using this for my Singer sewing machine restoration. Then hopefully I can use a professional Clear coat on top. What do you think?

Pat Frey well you could put a good 2 or 3 coats on it and let it ride. It has a pretty good shine once it dries but it CAN NOT BE IN DIRECT SUNLIGHT or it will fade. If it was going to be outside I think what I would do is POR15 it then epoxy prime it the paint with a good two stage paint or single stage paint. To me it is really slick and the paint I used to paint my frame is easy to scratch down to the POR15. You also might be able to clear coat over the top of the POR15 but I would do a test and see how it dries out.

@@ThezNutzGarage Thanks so much for that advice. I love the fact that it goes on very smooth and self levels which will take out some other stages if I used other products. I need to put decals on after the paint and before the clear coat. Thanks again!

Best thing to do was to get the smaller cans. You can take your time and not have to worry about a bigger can drying up on you. The bigger can is expensive!

Did you test the POR later to see if it really adhered? I have seen it peel up with a flat screwdriver like nothing before.

@@GW2_Live yes it’s is still on the frame. I painted the frame after in applied POR-15. My frame was sand blasted before I applied it to the frame.

great vid! did a small section pretty much all you can see from rear wheel well of my 1993 bronco when i replace leaf springs and the brackets, had to constantly swap out brushed because this stuff dries pretty fast. bullet proof best on the market.

Geoff240ti by the time I got to it I had layer a pretty thick first coat so I skipped the 2nd coat. I then painted the frame.

I think you are correct that POR says not to shake. Stir only to keep the air down. Great video.

Damn, good video man. I want to POR15 on my brake rotors. Not the rotor faces of course but the hat part that sometimes gets corroded and surface rust all over it. a 4oz can is plenty. Do you know where I can buy the pre-treat and a 4oz can? I cannot find just a 4 oz can. Thanks.

Question. I have a new bumper I am going to install on my daughter's jeep. It's brand new and is already painted. Do I need to prep the bumper in any way before painting it?

If it’s pre painted I would sand with 500 grit sandpaper then paint. Don’t apply POR 15 over paint.

It was covered in oil and dirt. It was also a time issue. It was easier to sand blast and let a little rust appear and then put on the POR15

Great video. Most I’ve found said to brush the metal prep not spray. Why did you decide to spray?

Well my frame was sandblasted so I didn’t have to super soak any areas. I also liked how easy it sprayed on. Maybe people brush it on to save the metal prep, idk. I will always spray it on and if I need to work an area I will go back with a brush.

Why not just epoxy prime the bare sandblasted frame and then scuff and top coat with a couple of coats of single stage urethane and be done with it? I’ve used POR, not on a full frame but on some smaller chassis parts that I had sandblasted. I followed their system as demonstrated here, (very good demonstration video by the way) and used their topcoat for UV resistance with decent results BUT it’s a lot less hassle, less mess and fewer steps to epoxy prime and topcoat with a urethane. If you’ve gone to the trouble of sandblasting a frame to bare metal, I’m not sure there is any advantage to using POR vs an epoxy primer. If for whatever reason you can’t media blast to a clean surface and you’ve needle scaled, or wire brushed a rusty surface as clean as possible, then yeah POR is a decent alternative.

On my next restoration build I may do primer and paint but at this time I don’t have a painting rig set up. I was just trying it out to see how it turned out.

@@ThezNutzGarage It does flow out nicely giving a nice sprayed finish look. Powder coating is another fairly cost efficient option if you have a capable facility nearby with a large enough oven to do a frame. All surface imperfections will show through the same as with POR. I’ve used all 3 methods on different projects. One advantage of epoxy prime and paint is that you can ‘body work’ out minor pitting and easy to repair if needed. Yes it does lay down smooth and maybe to smooth. I wonder if you primer over POR if it will adhere good enough to paint afterwards? I could have had it power coated for around $500 but doing it at home was the easiest for me.

@@ThezNutzGarage Not sure on whether it can be painted over with something other than the POR top coat, (which offers UV protection) and I seem to recall a limited window for best results but it’s a long time since I last used it. Usually, it’s best to stay within a product line to ensure compatibility but POR product support can probably give an answer.

Yes. Just make sure you still prep the area and if you paint it I would use an epoxy primer when the last cost is almost dries. It will fade in direct sunlight
