How to: Ask for a Raise (& actually get it!)

Scared of what your boss will think? Scared of failing? Scared of being met with a big fat "NO"? Well, this video is for you.
Here is my step-by-step guide on how to FEEL GOOD when asking for a raise. First, we need to shift our mindset. We're NOT asking for a raise. We're opening up a conversation about being fairly compensated. We're requesting an immediate salary adjustment. The company needs you, you need them. It's transactional, not emotional. It's professional, not personal (buy the sweatshirt as a reminder: bit.ly/3Z17STx)
__
👏💸 If you're thinking about asking for a raise, there's a GOOD chance you deserve one. If you aren't getting raises every 6-12 months, you're actually making less money due to inflation. So go! Open up a conversation about a salary adjustment. You got this! 👏💸

I once asked for a raise 3 months later, and they let me go. Fast forward 1 year later, that same employer tried re hiring me because he couldn't find a decent replacement. I interviewed again this time. I asked for double what I initially asked for, lol. I ended up working for a much better company with a way better salary . I've been here for 3 years and loving it! Especially the constant yearly raises 😊

Recently got a 7.5% raise which is very rare mid year where i work. Typical yearly raises are 2-4%. A few years ago got a 12% raise with a promotion. The promo i wrote a letter highlighting my skills and competencies based on job title descriptions by title. This time i just gathered some of my last years high profile projects and presented them to my manager. I told him this wasn't entry level work and that its beyond my pay scale. I bugged him for about 2 weeks then just chilled for about a month. Then asked again and that same day was when it was finalized. I will still get a raise at beginning of year too so two raises in one year. You dont get what you dont ask for.

Thank you so much. I just got offered a permanent contract and they said to sent them an e-mail this week with what I want to make. I wanna ask a 20% raise because I later found out that I got kind of a low offer when I first started working there. Didn't think to negotiate since it was my first 'real' job. But the tips from this video are definitely gonna help.

Erin I wish I could like this video 10 times. This was so useful for me. I j😊ust need to find the courage to ask for the raise. What is holding me back is mainly the fact that this is my first job, now 1 YOE. Generally people think this is too early but I brought so much to the table, so I want to try.

Thanks for giving me the push to ask for a raise! HR said no :(, so I asked when to follow up and they said to follow up in January! I didn't think it was the vibe to schedule a follow up meeting but I set a reminder for myself :) Love your content!

Hi Erin, thanks for all your helpful content. I have a question regarding time stamp 7:09, is it recommended to mKe a written compensation request email right after asking for one during your one on one ? Or should we wait for that follow up email, as the first written documentation of that ask, on our end.

I love your videos, however if you could have tips about doing this in retail… I feel like a lot of this relates to office/desk jobs. Like your suggestions with saving emails and etc showing your achievements is hard to do in retail bc we don’t really get personal emails or physical evidence all the time. And generally hard to make physical notes when you’re busy running around. (I work at an extremely busy mall that’s considered a tourist attraction where I live). I definitely don’t remember everything by the end of the day exactly. And I know I’m super late to this video. I’ve asked for a raises before at my old food service job but the situation in my luxury retail job is completely different.

If your company is small, has no HR and your manager has no real power, should we still go to them with the initial ask?

So… I have a different but related issue: What if you need a raise because you need more money and your work productivity is suffering because you don’t have the money you need to take care of personal needs? For context, I work in an industry notorious for long hours. I often (2-5x a month have meetings or tasks between 6-9am) and have to work almost daily after 5pm. Yes, there is a lot of down time during the day, but it’s too unpredictable to be able to use that time to get other things done like making meals, doing laundry, working out etc. The needs of the job can’t really change. But, not having the financial ability to outsource some of my daily tasks means that I’ve been losing sleep, not eating well, not being healthy etc. And that has had a massive impact on my work output. This had happened as well in my previous role and lead to severe burn out. It’s extremely common in my industry and other “fast-paced”work environments and I’d love to know if you had any thoughts on how to navigate a pay raise when it’s not that you’re creating additional value, but that the needs of the role require you to earn a higher salary to be sustainable.

Do these methods change at all due to covid? Since 2019 my company has been completely work from home and because i was hired a week before quarantine, i don't really know my boss...we email now and then but there is no office to meet in...i guess my question is, is it unprofessional to ask through email....?

Hi I am wanting to ask for a raise at my job I love it but they just made me lead with only a .40 cent raise should I bring up that the new hires are being hired on 3 dollars more than me or should I not?

That can be a warning sign. I'd ask to be fairly compensated to the market and make your case that you are already trained and familiar with the role of company, equipment, etc.

I’ve been ignored two out of three times I have asked. The thing is, I have gotten twice the work and there’s no sniffle of getting another team member to help with the workload. I’m also assisting in another department, supposedly short term but it’s been about a year and a half now I’ve been in two departments. I’ve been here for 5 years this coming may, and not one raise. I would love advice on what to do from here.

In my company if you bring salary up. They will have a CI Partnert meet and understand your job. Then chances are your role is eliminated unless they like you or are friends with them. They profit millions a mo th but there's some d. Sucking directors focusing on saving $ on employees expense.

At my job we recently brought back an employee I supervise who had left several months earlier for another job making more money. Ultimately they were unhappy and my boss suggested seeing if they were interested in coming back, which I thought was a good idea, and my boss offered her more money to close the deal. Now this person who I supervise makes 90% of what I do, and I’m not sure how to ask for a raise that makes this pay relationship more equitable. Thoughts?
