How to attach an airbrush to a home compressor. A guide for what you will need to get the hook up!
It is easy to do and there are many reasons you may want to airbrush with a compressor you already own! A quick tutorial and explanation.
garage compressor, home compressor, regular compressor.
BSP has become the standard and is the correct term to search at least in the USA. Most plumbing shops will have BSB threads which will also work.
Hose with JUST 1/4 inch NPT to BSB adapter
amzn.to/3lssrIq
Filter for bottom of airbrush only!
amzn.to/3cyuyEl
You can probably find these locally better.. but in case.
Multiple adapters.
amzn.to/3lk9jKl
Coil hose with quick connects built in
amzn.to/3hSX7Pz
Regulator trap combo (this is exactly the one i'm using)

tbh its not my first choice.. and I have a larger compressor. I plan on using this in a portable airbrush easel.. sort of. But they are pretty well built. If it were my only compressor id definitely have to have a bit more power. But I use a bit more air than most folks too.. this is WAY better than an "airbrush" compressor.

Thank you for showing me how I can use a shop compressor with the airbrush I have yet to buy for use in my train room. I really didn't want to have a little & noisy airbrush compressor in there as well. Now I know I can just run an air line across my ceiling in the shop and above the ceiling of my train room. I'll install the moisture filter in a spot between the ceiling joists where I can easily attach a hose "drop" down to wherever I'm working.

thank you for creating this video, it has really helped me out. I am running a refrigerator compressor, to a dual tank rig. From the compressor I had been running a coiled copper line to a section of rubber hose, a splined adapter to water trap/regulator, from that ran a hose to my airbrush. I want the pressure cut off aspect of the shop compressor, however, the skirt on my piston disintegrated, so I swapped out the noisy electric motor for the fridge compressor. Now that I have some time, I am wiring in a power switch and the pressure cutoff. I will run a short line to the tanks, and from the tank regulator, run a3/8 hose to my water trap, which I plan to mount to the side of my cart. put the whole compressor and tank on the bottom shelf of the cart, connect my hose to the water trap, like you have your on your bench. then the new line from water trap to airbrush. a set up like yours, but on wheels.

Another great video, thank you and I really appreciate them. I really liked the explanation of using a longer air hose and where to put the moisture trap. I clicked on the Amazon link for the air hose with adapter, however it shows 1/8 female and 1/4 female bsp so I don’t understand how it could or would work. I searched my local hardware stores, eBay, and Amazon but to my surprise it’s not as easy as I thought converting from bsp to npt. I decided to go an even simpler and a much more readily available route. Simply cut off the British female fitting and get a hose barb (I believe mine is 1/8 or might be 3/16 I.D.) with either male or female 1/4 npt threads, then get a air coupler (obviously with opposite male or female threads) to attach to the connection of your compressor. Quick, easy, and the parts are easy to find and inexpensive. I really like your explanations in your videos, thank you for sharing with people new to airbrushing like myself.
@TheAIRspace

If you have a harbour freight they sell the hose with the adapter. And their hoses are actually pretty good quality. They also pack a badger adapter in them I’ll check the link I posted sometimes Amazon switches them up. But more often than not they are mislabeled. I tend to believe almost all of the braided hoses are made from a couple suppliers and sold under various names.

This is pretty cool my 60 gal two stage compressor is hooked in to the house and provides all the nice clean air for my airbrushes and air tools in the garage. I do use 1 large moisture trap at the compressor and a smaller regulator trap/filter works great and I don't hear the compressor that's in the heater room. And a separate line for my air tools and full size spray guns.
@TheAIRspace
@TheAIRspace 3 года назад
Yes absolutely if you have a shop compressor and can pipe in air from a remote spot (where noise doesn't matter). That's a great way to go. Of course everyone's situation is different. But one things for sure, you cannot have too much air!

I did too but their hose is NPT at the 1/4 adapter and NPS at the 1/8. Brushes are BPS, no? I'm using an Iwata brush fyi. The Harbor Freight hose is the only kind I have seen with those connections. I fear crossthreading using it so I returned it and now looking for ways to adapt. The links this gentleman shared don't seem to match what he is describing in this vid. The hose he linked is BPS on both ends and not NPT on the 1/4 end according to the hoses product info page. Also, the adapters he shared don't say anything about being BPS according to theor description. In fact they mention other threading instead.. I decided to stay away from a hobby compressor and go a little larger for other uses too but this hose and threading thing is becoming a pain. Just finding all kinds of different and contradicting info when it comes to non hobby only compressors that send air out through NPT quick connects.
@TheAIRspace
@TheAIRspace 2 года назад
@@alan2698 the harbour freight airbrush hoses are the correct fitting for your airbrush. They at least used to come with a female npt adapter. As well. Harbour freight does sell everything you need. The airbrush hoses are green. If they have a chrome adapter in the bag then you just need the industrial quick connect to male npt adapter. Occasionally Amazon will redirect links. I will check the link and make sure it’s linked to the correct items If you ever see any links wrong I try and monitor every single comment on RU-vid. Occasionally I miss some. Thanks and good luck on your journey
@alan2698
@alan2698 2 года назад
@@TheAIRspace so strange. I wonder why their package stated nps and not bsp? Maybe you got it to work but it is not the correct threading and will cause cross threading (unless it is a typo?). They are different angles and thread styles physically. Also, I didn't mean to call out about the links. I was just recalling one I found with another commenter somewhere else in this thread. Their question seemed to line up with mine.
@TheAIRspace
@TheAIRspace 2 года назад
The BSP and NPS are very similar both being a non tapered thread unlike NPT threads. The difference is one is 28 threads per inch and the other 27. being the threads are loosely threaded will not cause an issue. They seal with a gasket and not by thread to thread contact. The variance is pretty loose. The part number is item 69578 for the harbor freight airbrush hose. Which incidentally will be the same hose that is used on their airbrushes.. which happen to have the same thread as every other airbrush outside of Pasche and Badger.. in the HF hose case it actually comes with a badger adapter as well. (there may be some oddball airbrush thread out there but I cannot think of any) Its actually a very good hose, Probably the best thing they sell for airbrushes. It is actually an airbrush hose from harbor freight in this video. As well as the adapter. I didn't take the comment about the link as a negative at all.

Home inprovement stores and hardware stores should have them in singles. For shirts you definitely want to go with the larger of the compressors. Depending on how much you want to do. Thanks for this info. I am building an airbrush station. My big Quincy compressor is far away and the air goes through 200’ of 3/4” copper tubing before entering the 60 gallon tank. I have a 300’ closed loop 3/4” Maxline running through 3 garages and my workshop. My airbrush station is far away from the compressor. I’m thinking of an activated charcoal filter, followed by a 5 micron filter, and a 0.01 micron coalescing filter at my airbrush drop down. Last thing will be a regulator. I’m using an Iwata Eclipse which I think requires an 1/8” hose. What regulator do you recommend? What brand and what range of psi? I like your multi port manifold that allows multiple guns active at once. That’s clever. Any advice you can give me is appreciated. Thanks, Paul
@TheAIRspace
@TheAIRspace 8 месяцев назад
I dont see a need for a charcoal filter in there. But with im assuming running air tools and the like I would get an oil water seperator in there somewhere. If you are already setup for spray guns.. then any small regulator / water trap combo will work. they are reasonably cheap. I used to run airlines for both large shops as well as Dental air lines and hospitals. There is not a lot of rocket science involved in shop air. ( i was a plumber for decades) Those qunicy compressors at least the old ones were sure great durable beasts. When i move from where im at ill definitely be moving on to a two stage compressor setup. And pipe air around my garage . and likely pull airlines into the studio. I actually run a small 3.5 gallon compressor in the next room and pipe over air. My setup is a lot nicer now so is the stuido. I just ran a small airline kit down and around I still have a splitter but this one is better than my old one. and I am using a flat mounted filter regulator combo.. but I may go back to the old style yet :)

Wil that adapter work to hook a standard sized shop compressor tool to an air brush compressor? Cuz i have a pneumatic graver machine i want to hook up to a tiny airbrush compressor. Ive done the research. The compressor will run the tool and im working in a small apartment with a girlfriend that hates noisy air compressors. I have a silent 2 gallon husky but it. Leaks so the compressor motor runs non stop. And the little airbrush compressor is about 1/4 the size of the husky and so much quieter. The ab compressor comes with that tiny female screw-in end fitting so i need to get it to hook up to the graver and that the regular shop sized fitting

i of course have no idea on thread size to your machine. But a 1/4 npt is a pretty standard size. Most airbrush compressors will have a 1/8 bsp male .

no issues with the regulator. and if I was running it a lot I absolutely would run a hose and water trap.. if just doing small stuff it really wont build up enough heat to make it an issue. I really only use the .5 compressor on occasional use. for portability sake. I consider it too small for my needs. it will keep up certainly, but if im airbrushing for hours it will be running far too much. I had a one horse 1 gallon senco that was plenty that I gave to a friend. But I usually use a 4.3 gallon as my regular compressor. Im almost always going to recomend a bigger compressor than a .5 tthe one horse one gallons will do great for most but the 2 gallon is going to run less and have less moisture.

Or if I can send msgs via email or social media platforms.. also had some questions on how the air compressor turns for soo long in the beginning? The pressure was going up about to almost 90. I wasn't sure if that's how it goes or when to turn & adjust the pressure to like 30 psi.. thank you
@TheAIRspace
@TheAIRspace 3 года назад
Ok the adapter from the 1/4 inch to 1/8 is 1/4 npt to 1/8 bsb. The compressor will auto shut off at it's max pressure. The regulator pressure is different than tank pressure. If using an exterior regulator I would just adjust the compressors regulator to 90 and adjust your other regulator from there. If just using the compressor turning the regulator valve down will adjust the pressure down on the second guage.. it may not drop pressure until you bleed air from the tank. If you message me on my Facebook page I'll always answer.. but may be delayed same as here! All the best! Bill!

@TheAIRspace
@TheAIRspace 2 года назад
There are two types of BSP threads one tapered one not.. you would definitely NOT want a tapered thread on an airbrush hose. The adapter from a compressor and incidentally almost all tapered threads at least here in the USA will be NPT. It would be difficult to find the industrial push in connector with anything other than 1/4 inch male or female NPT threads HERE. QUOTED TEXT ::: The difference between NPT vs. BSP threads has more to do with where you live than their applications. Both NPT and BSP are pipe thread standards for screw threads used on pipes and pipe fittings to seal pipes. BSP - UK, Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa (most countries worldwide) NPT - United States, Canada Both threads have the same pitch and the familiar shaped peaks and valleys. However, the designs of the threads differ in two fundamental ways. With NPT, the peaks and valleys of the threads are flat. In BSP, they are rounded. Secondly, the NPT angle of the thread is 60 degrees and the BSP angle is 55 degrees. NPT NPT is the abbreviation for National Pipe Thread Tapered, which is the U.S. standard for tapered threads used to join pipes and fittings. They were established as a standard by the American National Standard Pipe Thread, commonly referred to as the national pipe thread standards. NPT is one of the U.S. national technical standards for both tapered and straight thread series that are used for various purposes such as rigidity and pressure-tight sealing. BSP BSP is the abbreviation for British Standard Pipe. The thread, as defined by the ISO 228 standard, uses Whitworth standard threads, and is among a number of technical standards for screw threads that has been adopted internationally for interconnecting and sealing pipes and fittings. It has been adopted as standard in plumbing and pipe fitting nearly worldwide. END QUOTED TEXT From Arthur Harris and company BSB is commonly used in brass compression fitting applications, Or O ring seals such as an airbrush hose. BSP straight thread is going to be the same as bsb.

@TheAIRspace 2 года назад
i should have long ago amended the BSB abbreviation to BSPP However even when you order online its confusing because there are two different BSP threads BSP And BSPT And few ever differentiate as far as I can tell. BSB to me came from the days of plumbing for 30 years where it was always called BSB

@TheAIRspace
@TheAIRspace 2 года назад
Bsp is British standard pipe thread. Bsb is commonly called British standard brass, although it is not a correct denotation because there is actually no standard. Bsb is used exclusively for brass tubing fittings as far as I can remember. Bsp and bsb have a different pitch. Bsp would be used to join two pipe together with a threaded connection and a coupling/ elbow. Whereas bsb would be used in compression fittings for tubing. As a side note bsp and npt will thread together in 3/4 and 1/2 inch variants but other sizes will not create a leak free seal. The flex hoses of course are not made with a sleeve and tube inserted but rather an o ring and utilizing the bsp thread, as has been common with replacing sleeve tubing with flexible braided supply lines for the last several years.

typical aircompressors use 1/4 fittings, airbrush uses 1/8 fittings.. Your welcome... they actually sell a hose with 1/4 on one side and 1/8 on the other just for airbrushes (google: 1/4 inch to 8 in airbrush hose). The biggest scam on the market is those air compressors for airbrushes.. most dont have the flow for common airbrushes like a siphon (paint cup on bottom), I have an iawata that takes 40psi for its .35 tip just to do detail. The smallest I use is a .2 and the largest is a .7 fan tip. Gravity feed (paint cup on top) might get away with 18-20 for your basic uses with a .2 - .5 tips but that depends on how far away you need to be from your project with the gun and how thick your medium is. If you are just painting nails with a wetted out medium then sure, but if you ever wanna graduate then you are screwed. I got some basic acrylics that I paint with through a gravity feed .2 wetted out to the consistancy of milk and it can kick up to over 20 psi with normal use. some colors are lower some are higher. The typical psi out of one of those desktop air compressors you get on amazon for 60 bucks is about 35-40 psi but that is only if you use a reservoir tank. Plugged directly into it with no reserve air in a tank you will get maybe 20psi constant when using the gun. So you are right there at the minimum. I have a 7 gallon protable tank that I can plum my machine into and I can get most projects done with that no matter ho big it is. It is just a matter of carefully making sure I dont run my pressure down below by taking breaks for it to build up. I have this fortress ultra quiet in my setup and I dont need the reserve for that, even though it is only 1 gallon capacity the air compressor itself produces enough air to run even my fan tip .7 at full blast constantly. It is sort of mostly portable but the same could be said about my portable 7 gallon tank. so it is 6 in one and half a dozen in the other. The fortress has a pressure out regulator so that can be set to 60psi and then you run a hose to your workstation where you have another regulator you use to fine tune your pressure at the gun. You maintain the 125psi in the tank but only let out 60psi to the hose and bring it down to your required 18-40psi to your gun and use an inline mac valve from amazon to make adjustments if needed. SKip the inline mac valve if your gun has one. I set my pressure with distance from my work and use the mac valve to get closer for detail. easy peasy The difficult thing here is to find an air pressure regulator that is 0-60psi and not 0-150psi without breaking the bank. I dont like using the mac valves (micro air control) on my guns if I dont have to so I wanted an accurate and reliable air pressure regulator to be able to dial in an exact number. Most of the 1/4 cheap regulators are at 30psi just by cracking them open slightly so getting a fine tune with those is difficult without putting 2 of em in line and setting the first one to 60 and just leaving it there. The guage can be replaced on them, they are all 1/8 fittings from what I have seen but they arent really designed to be friendly at lower psi ranges! Getting a decent 0-60 digital psi regulator was prolly my best investment for repeatability and trouble shooting I have ever made. Those 0-150 regulators just have the lower end fine tune you need but you can make do until you start experimenting with different paints and mediums. inline mac valve with quick disconnect - www.amazon.com/dp/B002KDSRQY?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details
@ronniepaulinc
@ronniepaulinc 2 месяца назад
I need glasses to read and it becomes an issue with changing air pressure when I am painting, I am tossing around the idea of getting an 1/8inch 3 way fitting, large print 0-60psi gauge, then adjusting the airpressure going into that 3 way fitting with that MAC valve I linked in the original post, so I pass through the air and measure its psi all at the same time.... I am almost confident that would work better that any other regulator out there. Everytime you step down or increase the inner diameter of your airflow you make changes to the pressure. so the closer you are to your work in the same "ID" the more accurate your reading will be.. Would be a whole lot cheaper too!
